The most impressive part of Mitch's voice isn't really the high notes since a lot of guys can train to hit those, it's the control he has over those high notes that is absolutely insane.

Goli the mask placed head voice is still resonant and supported, it just has a very annoying twangy quality, especially because Mitch's voice is so warm and bright naturally. If he mixed his voice as high as his head voice goes with resonance and support, it would create a much more beautiful sound. Atleast, to my ears

Masked-placed head voice is used most of the times to mimic the mixed voice, but it's purpose could change from person to person. Some people do that because they don't know to mix, so they want to have that sound and ease without actually mixing, while some just like the sound. It really depends on the person, personally I don't really enjoy it except for when Mitch, Brendon and Zayn do it (lol) but I see its potentials.

I don't think he needs to do anything. I love his high notes as much as the next person and this seems to have worked for him for a long time. I do think that it would be better if he extended the support on his mix til B4/C5 because of the songs he has to sing on tour (Attention and Praying), but using the masked head voice it's also an option. I really love Mitch's mixed voice so I want to see a little more development to it, but still he uses his voice and range smartly and that's more than I could ask for! Of course there's a lot of room for improvement, like with any other singer, but it's not my duty or my bussiness to go tell him what he needs to work on - he'll decide that :)
I think he was at Bb4/B4 around 2013 and 2014. I don't know where exactly he started to decline on his mix but it's probably somewhere in 2015. He also had some strained A4s on the new album that I was very worried about but it seems to be a health thing, because he has been really great on the Superfruit tour.
Just finished watching this for a second time, and seriously, the way you put this whole video together was superb!! And how you concluded by showcasing the same notes together at the end was especially effective- the editing of the clips repeated back to back like that worked so well as a final demonstration. That C#5 in particular at 5:20-5:43 was really brilliant example, with the notes being held in such a similar way, and made the difference in tone easy to hear and understand. One of the reasons I love listening to Mitch so much is because he has such an adaptable voice, and constantly changes his vocal tone to get such different sounds to match the different songs and genres, which for me makes his voice so much more interesting than most singers. Thanks again for this excellent video (and thanks also for always taking the time to include all the video clips used in the description with time stamps- that must take a lot of extra time but it’s definitely appreciated- you really are a star!)

I love a good tenor not just for their ability to sing higher, but also their warm and bright tone. Though honestly, I think a baritone is even better if they have a nice full voice and are able to use their range really well.
All I know is that I love a certain way he places his voice, it sounds like a baby angel, and am disappointed when he uses what is being called "mask-placed" head voice. One sounds beautiful and the other is screechy. I feel guilty even saying that. But I remember a time when he was hitting high notes without screeching. just for example, The very end of Defying Gravity is the perfect sound that I love, and I love his voice in Telephone and Where are you now when he sings the "Uh, uh uh's". Mary did you know... I get chills when Mitch is singing. Is there a simple word for technique or placement in those examples I just shot out everywhere? Or am I just basically an uneducated idiot? I admit to being uneducated, so you can't call me an idiot for not knowing the technical points regarding voice. Now if I was trained and was speaking like this I would basically be the one that flunked the class.

Mitch basically changes the placement of his head voice to play with the dynamics and give a different feeling to his singing. Over the years he has also amplified the metallic quality of his voice there, which is not bad. Sure, it doesn't sound as good as his mix, but it does the job and obviously he has had epic moments on his mask-placed head voice, like the Aha climax. There's nothing wrong with having a different opinion on Mitch's voice! As long as you're respectful about it, ofc. But don't feel guilty! And don't worry if you don't know that much about singing to start a conversation, I can happily answer your questions about the concepts if you want :)

I wouldn't exactly agree with this stetement. There are a lot lf belty songs on the tour setlist, like Finesse and Attention and Hallelujah. He'll sometimes use head voice for his highest belts if he feels tired, but there had been a lot of bwlting from him on tour. I'll be making a video about that though!

What you said at 0:32 is arguable mask placed head voice doesn't make you sound bigger it just loud when not supported it used mainly to mimic mixing . it just a different placement actually pure supported head voice sounds bigger in my opinion , keep in mind he use pure head voice and support part of it . Also the A4 at 3:53 is not heady it quite balanced that not how a heady mix sounds like.

i LOVE mitch’s voice, but sometimes his mask voice just seems annoying to me. For example, the evolution of michael jackson, his mask voice was not really my favorite. Some people use different definitions for mixed voice. Some people think of mixed voice as chest based (chest voice blends and gains the ease of the head voice), falsetto based (falsetto made to sound more like chest voice), or a balance of the two. So if you call mask placed head voice as mix, it's likely because you consider that falsetto based sound as a part of the term mixed voice. This kind of sound is probably what is also referred to as reinforced falsetto.
A good example of this kind of "reinforced falsetto" or "masked place head voice" is Nick Pitera. When he sings the female part, he sings with a falsetto that is made to sound more like a female's voice and mimic the support of the chest voice. However, it is clear that this sound is disconnected from his real baritone voice, which is good for the two-voice effect he likes to play on. Some might call it mixed voice, maybe specifically a "heady mix". An extreme example would be rock stars like Axl Rose who almost exclusively use it in their high range. Unlike Nick, Axl goes for a rougher, more masculine sound but is using falsetto as the base of the sound.
There's actually two (or three if you consider) of doing mix. First: Get yo' chest voice and start to resonate it on your head (without being head voice) And there you have it, chest mix Second: Strength yo' head voice till' that sounds like your chest voice. Third: Reinforce your falsetto/hv by resonating it on the bones around the nasal cavity. And yes, that's masked hv. I don't count it as mixed voice, because there's really nothing of a mix, just resonanting it, not like being practicing on hv to strength it where that becomes almost like chest voice

You have to sing from a nasal placement, which could translate into "singing with your nose" if you'd like. You can achieve that by using certain consonants to help you place your voice in the center of your face (like the "N" consonant, or basically imitating a cat's meow). Forward/nasal/mask placement is about "throwing" the sound of your voice to the center of your face, aka your nose. This is very general though, so if you want to learn more ways to practice singing in a nasal placement you could watch good vocal coaches on UA-cam or get classes with a vocal teacher (which is what I think will be the best for you)

Mmmh, it depends on how the concept "belting" is used. Many people call belting the chest voice when it's actually the mixed voice. This is why I used "mixing" and didn't mentioned belting at all (I think?). But yeah, they're often used to refer to the same thing, which is the mixing range.
Most of your “mixed voice” examples are actually just his normal chest voice. Mixed voice doesn’t happen above a specific note. As you said, it’s when the chest and head voice mix. He can go up to E5 without mixing.

@@turnleftaticeland I usually don't care to much about terminology. I'm going to use the vocal mechanisms themselves to describe it. So instead of using chest voice I'll be using its mechanism (m1) and for falsetto/headvoice (m2). Mix voice is essentially blending registers effectively and smoothly. This can be done it 2 general ways. Theirs making your m1 sound like m2 meaning thinning your chest as you go up but staying in chest voice or making you m2 sound like m1. You'll know the difference when you try to attempt these two ways. Thinning m1 requires you to hold on to chest and the m2 way requires a release. Both ways can be used together and honestly should.
Every man above E4 sings in Falsetto! Unless they drag their chestvoice all the way through like Bruno mars....But what Mitch does is he twangs his headvoice and has a lot of nasal airflow....To some extent he drags his chest but it’s evident that above F#4 he mostly sings in head voice and A4 he sings in pure twanged headvoice....I think the reason why you got it all mixed up is because of how he modifys his vowels at times LoL
Cutie Zalbu There's mixed voice. In classical music it's called hv because it has more of a heady quality than pure chest voice (obviously since it's mixed voice) but in contemporary music you take the amount of chest you mix into account and that's why it's called mixed voice. I think you should watch the video again and pay attention to the difference between his mix and hv, his mix sounds more close to his speaking voice.

I can mix from F4 to C#6, the trick is being a man, or a contralto. There's almost no way a girl can mix anything before Bb4 or B4s.
on the fourth octave, the mix is more in your chest, it feels like your voice is cracking at first, but you’ll know it when you feel it

Falsetto does exist but Mitch's upper register is well connected so it's head voice.

Not everyone starts mixing from F#4, i start mixing from B4.

i LOVE mitch’s voice, but sometimes his mask voice just seems annoying to me. For example, the evolution of michael jackson, his mask voice was not really my favorite. However, whenever he uses his chest and mixed, it is so much more pleasant to me. And I think he can mix pretty high too, so I hope he mixes more!

the 'mask placed head voice' is actually a mixed. at least that's what i've seen vocal coaches say about him. (not throwing shade, just saying)
Some people use different definitions for mixed voice. Some people think of mixed voice as chest based (chest voice blends and gains the ease of the head voice), falsetto based (falsetto made to sound more like chest voice), or a balance of the two. So if you call mask placed head voice as mix, it's likely because you consider that falsetto based sound as a part of the term mixed voice. This kind of sound is probably what is also referred to as reinforced falsetto.
A good example of this kind of "reinforced falsetto" or "masked place head voice" is Nick Pitera. When he sings the female part, he sings with a falsetto that is made to sound more like a female's voice and mimic the support of the chest voice. However, it is clear that this sound is disconnected from his real baritone voice, which is good for the two-voice effect he likes to play on. Some might call it mixed voice, maybe specifically a "heady mix". An extreme example would be rock stars like Axl Rose who almost exclusively use it in their high range. Unlike Nick, Axl goes for a rougher, more masculine sound but is using falsetto as the base of the sound.
There's actually two (or three if you consider) of doing mix.
First: Get yo' chest voice and start to resonate it on your head (without being head voice) And there you have it, chest mix
Second: Strength yo' head voice till' that sounds like your chest voice.
Third: Reinforce your falsetto/hv by resonating it on the bones around the nasal cavity. And yes, that's masked hv. I don't count it as mixed voice, because there's really nothing of a mix, just resonanting it, not like being practicing on hv to strength it where that becomes almost like chest voice

You have to sing from a nasal placement, which could translate into "singing with your nose" if you'd like. You can achieve that by using certain consonants to help you place your voice in the center of your face (like the "N" consonant, or basically imitating a cat's meow). Forward/nasal/mask placement is about "throwing" the sound of your voice to the center of your face, aka your nose.
This is very general though, so if you want to learn more ways to practice singing in a nasal placement you could watch good vocal coaches on UA-cam or get classes with a vocal teacher (which is what I think will be the best for you)

Mix and belting aren't the same thing?
Mmmh, it depends on how the concept "belting" is used. Many people call belting the chest voice when it's actually the mixed voice. This is why I used "mixing" and didn't mentioned belting at all (I think?). But yeah, they're often used to refer to the same thing, which is the mixing range.

Most of your “mixed voice” examples are actually just his normal chest voice. Mixed voice doesn’t happen above a specific note. As you said, it’s when the chest and head voice mix. He can go up to E5 without mixing.

@@turnleftaticeland I usually don't care to much about terminology. I'm going to use the vocal mechanisms themselves to describe it. So instead of using chest voice I'll be using its mechanism (m1) and for falsetto/headvoice (m2). Mix voice is essentially blending registers effectively and smoothly. This can be done it 2 general ways. Theirs making your m1 sound like m2 meaning thinning your chest as you go up but staying in chest voice or making you m2 sound like m1. You'll know the difference when you try to attempt these two ways. Thinning m1 requires you to hold on to chest and the m2 way requires a release. Both ways can be used together and honestly should.

Every man above E4 sings in Falsetto! Unless they drag their chestvoice all the way through like Bruno mars....But what Mitch does is he twangs his headvoice and has a lot of nasal airflow....To some extent he drags his chest but it’s evident that above F#4 he mostly sings in head voice and A4 he sings in pure twanged headvoice....I think the reason why you got it all mixed up is because of how he modifys his vowels at times LoL
Cutie Zalbu There's mixed voice. In classical music it's called hv because it has more of a heady quality than pure chest voice (obviously since it's mixed voice) but in contemporary music you take the amount of chest you mix into account and that's why it's called mixed voice. I think you should watch the video again and pay attention to the difference between his mix and hv, his mix sounds more close to his speaking voice.
