Not only is there no ego there, you can see Floor was SO pleased for Marko… letting him have center stage and the limelight. That smile of hers at the end could have melted Antarctica.
There are many facets to Marko's voice. He has power, plus control and technique. The Marko/Floor era of Nightwish is really something else. It is exceedingly rare to be able to hear two such accomplished singers in one band at the same time.
@@themetalmuse I was also live with Marko and Tarja last weekend. Hearing and experiencing him up close in a small location was simply great... and there were a few great duets with Tarja to boot
I love Floor's professionalism in this song where she sings back up vocals and never overpowers Marko. We all know she can, but she actually just sings her part. I have massive respect for the comfort of the band to do this. Also, Marko is the biggest metalhead of the band, yet at the time his bandmates point out in many interviews that he writes the sweetest and softest songs.

Fantastic version, and I really loved your reaction as I always do. The music video to this is also pretty special, very atmospheric and well worth checking out 🤘
There is also a making of video for the music video, which is impressive. The location was difficult, and how they mixed in the cgi elements was interesting. This song is also the inspiration for the virtual concert venue created for the 2021streamed virtual concerts at the Islanders Arms.
The music video inspired far more than one person to comment “Nightwish don’t sit around campfires. Campfires sit around Nightwish.” If anyone’s not aware, Marko originally wrote this song (lyrics assist by Tuomas). When he left the band, I thought it BEAUTIFUL how they themed their virtual show “An Evening With Nightwish - Live in a Virtual World”. The “venue” was an inn named The Islander Arms. Thank you for helping me hype for December 14th. Flying to Tampere to watch Raskasta Joulua, a big christmas concert with Marko and 13 other rock musicians. This made me check the calendar for how many days it's left :)
Marko composed the music with his first band Tarot, but it didn't fit with them. Tuomas heard him playing it one day and decided it would make a great song. He wrote the lyrics about a lonely lighthouse keeper. So I would definitely go with sea shanty. From the 2007 Dark Passion Play album, Anette era. The spoken part roughly translates to "If I play the chorus, you're gonna sing along, right?" - "Yeah!" - "Are you sure?" - "Yeah!" - "Ok, let's do it". There was another spoken part just before this video started, Marko says that he is just 1 man with a guitar and 20k people, so he better come up with something. And that the other weasels doubled back and left him. Glad the 'weasels' came back. 😂 When Marko left , Tuomas said that this is one of the songs that they just wouldn't be able to play again. But you may see it played live , by Marko in his solo shows. He had played this since he left NW.
You are correct. This is one of only a small handful of Nightwish songs that aren't "metal". Another would be "While Your Lips are Still Red", also featuring Marko (which I believe you have seen from the Wembley show). There is also the song "Slow, Love, Slow" from their "Imaginaerum" album. Total departure from their usual stuff. There is a music video as well as a live performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Both feature Annette, the singer on the studio recording. Floor Jansen also performs "Slow, Love, Slow" during her solo show in Amsterdam in 2021. Check her YT channel for all the songs from that show.
There is an unofficial version of this with an extended beginning in which Marko sets the scene before starting to sing:- Nightwish - The Islander (Live At Tampere) : ua-cam.com/video/Zo8ncK_5kzc/v-deo.html
Great reaction! Music was written by Marko. He decided it wasn't a good fit for his band Tarot so he brought it to Nightwish and Tuomas added the lyrics. Marko is so versatile as singer and he definitely can go sweet and tender, like you saw in While Your Lips are Still Red. One of my favorite Marko/Nightwish songs is Endlessness off the Human Nature album. Last song Marko sang lead on for Nightwish and a beautiful song about living a great life and then graciously accepting our fate when death comes and jump into what ever adventure awaits us on the other side. Marko has also done a bunch of work with other artists. One of my favorites is him singing with Charlotte Wessels and Delain the song The Gathering live from Masters of Rock. ua-cam.com/video/4X4jNBrFEn0/v-deo.htmlsi=ivOLG9Z5jOTdRhbj. Marko has always been one of my favourite male singers. When people hear this style of song they usually think of sea shantys from the British Isles but Scandanavian cultures have them as well. An older band to listen is Hednigarna! Careful. At 8:46 you said “Troy’s vocals” instead of Marko’s! 😊
But you're not too late for the Nightwish journey. I was early listening to them when they were just kids from the neighboring town and Marco wouldn't be a member for a long time yet, they were, are and will be awesome and you got to experience them at the time they were alive. You can pat yourself on the back for being on time. The people 1000 years from now won't be so lucky even if the music is still relevant and they have holograms and such. You can still go see him live, he's still around.
