  • Liverpool's loss to Brentford during the week combined with Virgil Van Dijk's latest injury setback has left Liverpool's race for the top four on the verge of crisis. Rory Jennings and Ade Oladipo sat down to discuss where it's gone wrong for Jurgen Klopp's side and Darwin Nunez so far this season.

Totally disagree about Thiago here. He has been the best midfielder in our team this season - both offensively and defensively. His defensive work is highly underrated, just rewatch the match against Leicester! Granted he doesn't have recovery pace but he is our best tackler and presser in that midfield this season. It's the other two in midfield who are underperforming.

Personally I agree with Ade. Thiago and Keita were brought in to help us break down teams when the parked the bus. Thiago to provide the perfect pass and Keita to run at defences. Thiago was not brought in to play every game at high intensity or chase back. With two/three quality additions it would bring out the best of Thiago, Hendo and Fabinho and prolong their careers. Saying Thiago is our best midfielder is saying much

It's fucking weird bro. Like what the fuck are they thinking? I understand we didn't think Fabinho would be this shit, but Ox, Keita, Henderson, Milner, Jones.. we really fucking thought these guys are good enough? The problem with FSG is that as long as theres a name there filling a role, then they aren't looking to improve that position in the market. The relying on extremely injury prone players and players WAY passed it like Ox, Henderson and Milner, is fucking gross negligence. And we'll never truly know if this was a Klopp decision or an FSG decision.

Spot on from Ade. I personally would like Liverpool to shift to a technically stronger midfield, than replace with another energetic trio alone. But the midfield is the biggest and main issue. They need 3 top midfielders. I'm worried about top 4 as well. Unless we start putting great form together, which seems unlikely, there are too many teams up there this year. It's crazy how we've had 2 massive breaks (WC and Queen) and Klopp hasn't sorted out anything.

Klopp also needs to be ruthless and trim the fat, sell Ox and Keita, hasn't really worked for either of them, injuries have played a big part, but Keita has never really shown anything in a Liverpool shirt. Ox has had his moments but has also been below par and is finished at the top level, as an Arsenal fan I was upset when we sold him to Liverpool but looking back I think we actually got his best years.

Good analysis and in agreement with Danny Murphy. The EPL is about fine margins and if there are little drops it exacerbates little problems. Klopp definitely was wrong about moving on Ox and Naby in summer. But what is huge is Mo only has 7 goals and obviously Darwin isn’t scoring yet which are two huge problems. We have to score 20-30% more than we have, and if we did we wouldn’t be talking about this. Throw in Harvey and we lose a little pace for defensive duties. And then just overall we have been getting older and it is very evident by the metric of being out run each match usually. This was totally avoidable if we just brought in a couple of midfielders the past couple of years to refresh the squad. Not much just 2 for say a total of 70-80 mil max. Now we are caught in a horrible position again. Klopp gets too attached to players that have brought him success and is unable to move them on for the good of the team financially and otherwise.

The midfield is clearly the most glaring issue and the negligence of repeatedly not strengthening there is infuriating, but I think there are several things going on. That alone doesn't explain the complete drop in form of most players.

I don’t totally agree with Ade about Thiago, but he’s definitely right that his injection takes away defensive stability. Along with lack legs and pace running around the pitch, he also feels much less defensively intelligent than Wijnaldum was. Thiago gets credit because his defensive numbers look good, but his compared to Wijnaldum feels like Van Dijk in past seasons vs this. The defensive involvement and activity go up, but not because the player is defending better, but because his positioning hasn’t been as good so he has to do more to make up for that fact.

Recruitment is both our biggest strength and our biggest weakness. A few years ago Liverpool fans were crying for a new cb after Lovern left, we didn't sign one and then VVD got injured and we had a terrible season. We've needed a box to box for a few years now with Hendo getting old and Wijnaldum leaving and we still havent signed one. But then we sign players like diaz, Jota, Salah and Gakpo who are amazing.

Massively because of negligence in the Midfield. Ox, Keïta, Milner, Jones are straight up not good enough anymore. Elliott, Carvalho and Bajcetic need time to develop. Henderson and Fabinho are well into their declines. Thiago is a great attacking midfielder with no defensive prowess. And then they never replaced Wijnaldum. This is all fucked because they will not buy a midfielder. I think Klopp needs to find a new tactic ontop of that because we are so predictable.

Some of the takes in this are ridiculous man. Saying we were awful against villa to start is stupid. We could have scored 8 , defence was shoddy but to say we were awful makes no sense. The most boring take from anyone is the "we never replaced wijnaldum" shout. The season before he left h was run into the ground. Awful in huge spells but people are hung up on "not replacing" him. This same midfield last season was 2 games away from the impossible. nobody spoke about wijnaldum then. Now we're in a tough spell you get these horrendous shouts of "the seasons over" its honestly everything thats wrong with football at the minute. To make them calls about Thiago is an absolute joke. One of our best players and hugely missed when injured and arguably the best player defensively on the pitch against Leicester in mid week.

The complete lack of understanding around Keita is mental. He only hasn't worked because he's always injured. When he's fit with a run of games (which I understand is akin to a charizard shiny) he's class. We haven't used him correctly either. We use him too deep, when he played against Citteh last season in the semi, and against Brentford this season he was higher and breaking lines. The only one being progressive. He's class and gets so misunderstood. The injuries, like with the Ox, have ruined him.

when you don't freshen up a key part of the team in about 4 years don't be surprised when it starts to look a bit jaded. Players aren't robots and this group has played an insane number of games over the past 4 years at a high intensity at some point that catches up to you as players age. It's negligence on Klopp and his team not to identify this issue sooner and act to make it better before it became a major issue.

The midfield is the problem Keita,Ox,Thiago all injury prone, Henderson doesn't seem to be able to play 2 games a week now, Fabinho has had an awful season i think he's still able to play to his high level, Carvalho and Elliott are too young to control the midfield, Ox could be the player we need in midfield if he could stay fit and get back to his best but he can't stay fit at all, Jones is living off that Everton goal he scored and has done nothing since, Milner is great but he's 37 he can't play every week but he's a great person to have around the team, we need 3/4 midfielders and if we get jude then thats over half the budget gone on just 1. We never replaced Gini and yet we are expecting Ox/Keita/Milner all to go in the summer so we will need a few signing for sure and i dont think the owners will give us that

  • @HarryBilling
    @HarryBilling Рік тому

The way I look at this situation from 50 feet above the ground, there are a couple of reasons for where we stand today in all reality.
    1. Liverpool never replaced Gini in all honesty.
    2. Keeping Salah over Mane, even though I was convinced to keep Salah was a better option until this season when we understand what we missing not having Mane.
    3. Klopp being Klopp, is the greatest teacher but doesn't know when to move on.
    4. Fabinho is the biggest disappointment of this season so far, never saw this coming.
    5. LFC medical staff, the amount of injuries this season is directly related to our backroom staff.
    6. FSG + Klopp - if the budget was limited, spend accordingly. If our funds were so limited, why buy Nunez & Gapko for £130M price. We could have built half our midfield at this point for the future, plus a great signing in this summer.
let me know if you agree or disagree with these points.

You invest in quality defenders and they might have a chance but they really haven't.

I am very optimistic with Diaz, Nunez and Gakpo for the future. Jota I have a serious concern over his injury record. I am also concerned about our medical department both Jota and Diaz miss thtree months then when they came back both immediately picked up same injury. Why wasnt Diaz not operated on???. Lets be honest about our midfield, Keita, Ox, Milner (who has been a legend) need to go, Jones should be sent on loan to prove his fitness and if he can compete at this level, Thiago is a luxury player he was brought in for his creativity when we found it hard to break a team down he was not bought to play every game or chase back, Hendo, Fabinho will improve when they have rest
