    This is a great vid of how this very complicated planter works. Always wondered how. Might be worth an update for those who signed on in later years. Take care and be safe.

    Very informative video.. It's actually a much more complex process than I initially thought. Thanks for stopping your tractor to show us how it works.

    Mind reader. Was hoping in the last video that you’d explain how the planter works. Very interesting. Boy had farming come a long way. Could you imagine doing everything by hand? Glad I found your channel.

    I suppose depending on how good the metal is cutting the trench, a fat rock could be bad. I'd be curious what your farm does to mitigate rocks.

    In the plant in southern Brazil. Our planters are combined fertilizer / seed. At what time you guys apply the fertilizer.?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  7 років тому +2

      Valdemir Ansino Gallas Sorry I'm late on the response. We apply most of our fertilizer in the fall before the ground freezes. Many farmers around here do it in the spring also. Both are common.

    Thank you so much to explain how that works I saw somebody else using a vacuum they said to plant with and I didn't quite figure out what the hell is going on but you explained it perfectly thank you so much for taking the time out to do so enjoy your Channel. I have never noticed any other planter has wheels I see that yours runs on tracks is that correct that what I saw. And I'm guessing that is just for flotation order those tracks driving any other kind of gear or function in the planter or is it strictly for flotation?

    Just found your channel and I think its freaking awesome, I've always lived in the "country" a little farm town called Kelseyville. And I've never ever had a chance to learn anything about these farming machines.
    But for some reason deep inside I feel terrible while you're explaining all these videos because I feel like its wasting time.

    • @Slippity_Slappity
      @Slippity_Slappity 4 роки тому

      Explaining was the whole reason he started this channel. It sure wasn't started to save time on the farm, haha.
      Zach's vision was to bring greater unity and understanding between the farming community and the general public. I think it's a great goal, and much needed. I also think he does a great job of it. Plus it's just good fun to watch.
      Thankfully his channel has grown to the point where the money he makes should offset the time he loses making the videos. I think by now it more than compensates, especially if you count all the multiple streams of income and the special deals that his brand and online presence has enabled. I'm sure it's somewhat difficult to quantify, but again his goal was education and outreach, not so much to make it "worth" the time financially.

    Why no row cleaners? Are you trying to do the what IH guys do and run just the openers?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  8 років тому

      In the past we had more problems with row cleaners than we think they were worth. We haven't run them for several years.

    great videos. what time in the morning do most farmers start planting and for how long in one day?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  8 років тому +7

      That's extremely dependent on weather in our area. If the forecast makes it look like we have plenty of time to get things planted we will work from roughly 7 AM until about 9 at night this time of year. If it's a late spring because it doesn't stop raining, we will go much longer hours. If rain is coming tomorrow and we are close to finishing we will keep going until we're either done or it rains! Every day is different.

    How do you guys like the tracks on the planter?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  8 років тому

      We are really liking them so far. They don't sink in at all like the tires did and they definitely don't ridge up when turning. We had some wheel bolts come loose on them but after cleaning them and using good loc-tite we haven't had any issues now for several hundred acres.

    Have you looked into 15" row beans?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  8 років тому

      Yes we grew some in the past (long before I was running the planter) and never found enough of a yield gain to justify the extra equipment. Less than half of the guys in our area plant beans in 15 inch rows. A few are on 22" for both corn and beans.

    so you don't run any liquid for corn?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  8 років тому +3

      No. 80-90% of the guys in our area do but we didn't see a consistent return from it so we quit using it several years ago. Sometimes we could visually see the color difference in the plants when we ran side-by-side trials but it rarely translated into a yield difference that would pay for itself.
