When I hear him talk, my mood is lifted, the world grows wider, more mysterious and more beautiful.

When Alfred Hitchcock was filming The Birds he asked Messiaen to compose the film score. OM agreed but on delivery AH didn't like it. "Too much piano. Nothing like real birds." AH went on to hire Bernard Herrmann. Twenty two years later, OM and BH met in a post office in Montmartre. They eyeballed each other but never spoke. Funny how things turn out.

You and my Ravens and Woodpeckers have inspired more music! Which was the score Penderecki was turned down for? I thought it was Dune, but am not sure now. Glad he did not put is signature on that. He remains at the top pof my list. His Passion and Entombment remains a fearless confrontation with the dark side of the souls journey. He just died on Mar 29, 2020. A Bird Requiem. Thank you great Composer of the 21st century!

@MrLizardisle Yvonne Loriod playing the ondes? Surely it would have been her sister Jeanne, who was the famed exponent of the instrument. As I recall (possibly from Peter Hall and Nigel Simeone's biography of Messiaen), Yvonne did play the ondes - she taught a Japanese pianist well enough to play the Turangalila ondes part for the Japanese premiere - but not publicly. For that matter she was also a prolific composer, understandably now overshadowed in this regard by her husband!

Were the excerpts that Yvonne played in this video part of any composition or work published by Messiaen? If so, which work (and if applicable, what section of the work)? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I can't seem to find these exact excerpts anywhere

With a few exceptions, I'm mostly not that fond of what I've heard by Messiaen (nor am I convinced by his attempts to translate birdsong into music or his attempts at portraying religious grace and faith), but man, does he look like he would have been a fun guy to know or have as a teacher! An eccentric in the best sense of the word.

He mentions in one of his books 'Techniques of my musical language' that one 'with a very fine ear' could hear an F sharp over a resonating low C. However, I assume this applies with all augmented 4th intervals?

Boulez wasn't totally correct about birds not being able to produce bass notes because of their diminutive size. All animals including mammals and birds can produce low frequencies using vocal fry and other non-linear processes that don't require resonance.
