- Many documentaries, some of them extremely interesting, have been made about Messiaen; very few about his wife. And yet, over and above its intrinsic human interest, the couple they formed embodies the indispensable relationship between the composer and his interpreter. Messiaen was an unusually gifted pianist and an organist fit to rank among the finest, but without Yvonne Loriod who heard his new pieces during their gestation and sometimes played his sketches for him, would he have written so large a body of keyboard works?

The last minute of this video is the greatest thing I've ever seen. Messiaen looking like a stern owl and Madame Loriod just grooving on the church bells ...
Weldon Hunter lol
@@Alix777. perfect, YES
I think I'm in love with Yvonne. No, I KNOW I am. Ever since watching her play the fiendishly difficult 'La fauvette des jardins' from memory (as always) at the English Bach Festival in 1973, this 13-year old was amazed that this was even possible. But I wish OM smiled occasionally - I don't think laughter was really his strong point (he of course, had many others)
Look at the brief videos of him talking about birds. He's very jubilant.
What a pianist she was, What a Lady:)
deeply moving - Messiaen and Loriod have inexplicable gifts
What exactly was Messiaen's "participation exceptionelle"? All he did was watching his score! The austere face at the end is in sharp contrast with the fancy shirt...
these were his last days if life, he was not well.
This is from a full-length video (I have the VHS version) about Yvonne Loriod. Thus her husband's participation is being billed simply as a special extra bonus.
He once sat behind me at a concert where Madame Loriod performed the Turangalia symphony and she was playing piano. I had learned some of his Vingt Regards as a student, and I never brought the score with me to have him sign it that night as I didn't know he would be there. However I deserved bad fortune because I had stolen the score from a shop because I didn't have the money to buy it at the time. Years later, I went back to the shop and I repaid the money owed and more, not mentioning my theft of course but Messiaen had since passed away. The score was settled you could say. I never stole another book again.
that's a very interesting story.
une vidéo singulière... merveilleuse
This is fascinating! And right at the end, the bell sounds the Angelus.
messiaen the fuck'in monster and genius
Can you imagine living in a town where they ring the carillons or church bells etc.?
Brilliant, marvelous, what a gift.
This is fascinating! And right at the end :)
Messiaen's face XD
She looks like your quintessential piano teacher
Exactly what I thought who taught me for years with the same hair do. Remarkable.
Voici quelques souvenirs
