      Yellow and white: lighter complexion
      Blue and brown: darker complexion
The general idea is that you mix more of two and less of the other two when trying to achieve a lighter or darker colour.

    • @bethlewis7968
      @bethlewis7968 6 років тому +20

Niamh Brady I’ve just started and I have :
      Odourless paint thinner
      Varnish (optional)
Oil graduate paints by Daler Rowney
      Acrylic Gesso
      Watercolour paper
      Brushes
You can also get linseed oil and canvases but this has been working pretty well. I don’t have a palette for oils yet so I’ve been using plastic wallets x I already do watercolour so I found it very efficient just to get gesso and paint it on watercolour paper as the paper is quite thick so the paint doesn’t cause it to warp and bend

      @-zephyressence-2018 5 років тому +95

You learn, practice, grow. Talent is widely overrated in the artistic community.
Oftentimes the ones who become the best artists are the ones who put in the work and time to get better rather than relying on talent alone. Even talent runs out without spending time learning and exercising knowledge.
Skill is something that can be acquired if you want it badly enough. So don't feel discouraged! :)

As a young artist whenever I watch other art videos I feel like they always have black or white, no grey, there’s no middle ground as if their technique is the only right technique which really intimidates me and makes me feel like a crap artist because I’m not using their way.
Thank you so much for being calm and helpful

She is great to watch and to listen too. I recommend giving sketching a try if you feel even a slight interest. I have recently started attending a class and have started doing extra sketches and watercolours outside class (no oils yet!) and will adivce you that it is a learning process: nobody is just a good artist 'right out of the box'. I look at one of my portrait paintings from even a few weeks ago (a picture I saw in Time magazine) and I am slightly embarrassed looking at it now when I compare it to a more recent sketch which means I have progressed over a few weeks. Try even sketching an eye : but think of it just as an object, not as a preconceived 'this is what an eye looks like'. That approach works for just about everything I think. Go on give it a try! It can be very satisfying.

Unlike other kinds of video, i personally find art tutorial videos always have much more likes compare to unlikes, maybe people who paint all so patient and calm, so nice to others.

When you add the paint to the canvas do you mix it with a medium or do you put just paint?

    • @edwinparra690

shaun oodoomansaib if you decide to paint in layers,,, u have to let the paint dry every time. when you paint with oils you start with very thin paint as your first layer. To thin the paint you add the thinner. As the layers dry, you use thicker paint with less thinner. All of this is to avoid the paint from underneath cracking after it dries. Also it helps adds craftsmanship and in my opinion working in layers is easier( although more time consuming) and leads to a better result. Hope this helped.

In the later layers, instead of going thicker, go fatter. The paint doesn't have to be thicker, it just has to have more oil in it. If someone wanted to glaze for example, they wouldn't be able to see through any layers if they just painted thicker and thicker over previous layers. So by keeping the layers thin but adding oil, you can layer and layer and layer..... and still be able to mix optically. I'm not sure if that's what you meant by "thicker" but sometimes people can get confused and think it means literally thick paint.
