    I was really surprised how no one predicted the 262 to win the intercept when that is EXACTLY what it was designed to do. I had no doubt in my mind the 262 would win by miles.

    • @I_am_not_a_dog
      @I_am_not_a_dog 2 роки тому +11

      Definitely. Grim *vastly* overestimated the time it would take for the 262 to come into her full/best powerband.
      Once she gets up to about 350kph (217mph) her acceleration really takes off.
      Also, I was surprised no one noted that IL-2 (quite annoyingly) only displays IAS, not TAS. The 262 does have a TAS calculator built-in to its internal speedometer, though.
      Also, interestingly, unlike most other early turbojets, the 262’s top TAS increases with altitude, peaking at about 22,000ft (above which her power drops-off quite dramatically). This definitely helped Grim out even more (than he expected).

      It’s a difficult one to assess to be fair. The props weren’t that far off and we know altitude is so important too. Few went into limp mode too and I believed the late model spits would have done better but problems happened for the pilot. While you thought the 262 would eventually win I did start to doubt myself looking at the opposition.

    Thanks guys for a truly entertaining race! I think I enjoyed that one more than the others in this series. People can really relate to these planes because of their massive historical importance, and the engineering comes from a time that was more comprehensible, less about computer flight models and more about engine power, drag, airframe weight, etc. A much more visceral experience than comparing dots on a map at Mach 1.9 vs. 2.0 or whatever. Very well done!

    I've love to see the difference between the late WWII Jets, Me 262 and Meteor, and the early 50's jets. Would be really interesting to see how much quicker they got immediately after the war ended.

    • @kosmokenny
      @kosmokenny 2 роки тому

      Immediately post war, the Brits sold everyone the Nene engine, which increased thrust compared to the WW2 engines from 2200ish lbs of thrust to 5000 lbs. They shrunk a Nene to fit in the Meteor and got it over 600 mph right after the war ended. Me-262 had a thrust to weight ratio of .28 and a climb rate of 3900 ft/min. The Nenes got post-war straight winged jets to a .5 thrust to weight ratio and a climb rate of 7000 ft/min. Then the Soviets slapped a Nene in the MiG-15 in 1947 with swept wings. Cruise speeds went up from ~450 mph to ~550 mph and climb rates over 10000 ft/min. At the same time, America was developing the supersonic delta winged F4D. That first flew in 1951 with a thrust to weight ratio of .71 and a climb rate of 18000 ft/min. That was really the last of the war era designs and took a while to get into service, but once they got that pesky sound barrier out of the way, things started really going crazy in the 50s. So basically, immediately post war halve the time to altitude and figure 600 mph top speed. Then for the swept wing fighters take another 50% off the time to altitude and mach .9 top speed.

      Yeah makes me think the guys didn't know the distance they would travel, if it was something like 20 miles I'm sure 109s, Spitfires and the P38 would do the best but cmon, 200 miles is more than enough for these jet engines to completely outmatch any of the piston fighters.

    • @hasina1461
      @hasina1461 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah if shorter range results would have been much different but it’s what cap wanted mission wise.
      Ww2 radar was actually pretty good for what it was. Chain home radar was good enough to spot German formations forming up over France and German radar could definitely spit aircraft coming over the channel.
      German fighters would scramble and wait in ambush for the bombers to get past the range in which they knew allied fighters had to turn back because of fuel, this was before the P51 of course but seeing bombers at that range was defiantly a possibility

  • @stug77
    @stug77 2 роки тому +6

    Each plane climbing at ideal indicated airspeed will make a *massive* difference in time to climb results. You should do this again with a little more prep and training.
    The Jumo 004b's of the 262 aren't considered "good" at pressure recovery, and will generally loose thrust at higher speeds, particularly at altitude where critical mach of inlet air flow is lower. The reason that it appears to gain thrust over it's competitors is propeller efficiency reduction at high airspeed. The turbojets loose thrust, but the props loose much more.
    Just my opinion, but I see IL-2's flight model as quite dated technologically, and in no way comparable to DCS realism. Although it could just be some of the models as I haven't flown all of them.

    You can figure out the power of engines with only thrust values given using the formula Power = Thrust*Airspeed
    Edit: Probably better to convert everything to SI so you don't have to deal with freedom units. Speed in m/s and thrust in N will give power in watts. I did a quick back of the napkin calculation for the me262 based on the thrust values you gave and the quoted top speed on Wikipedia and got around 640 horsepower. Keep in mind this is the power required to maintain the top speed so under acceleration the max power of the engines is probably a bit higher

    I've really been enjoying these races but crashes on takeoff seem to skew the results. I'm sure the P-38 would have been a strong contender among the windmill fighters had it not crashed and needed to respawn. Now I do understand the nature of racing often means a trip into the wall, but when you put a fighter with excellent traction from the start, behind a plane that comes out of the hole like a sleepy bear, you can expect similar disasters almost every time. I think every one should get an even shot at the start, how about spreading your planes over 2 airfields? You can have the bomber fly a course that goes halfway between the starting points making the parallax equal for both groups of competitors. This way all pilots can have a clean windscreen to start, and meet at the same point at intercept...?

    • @grimreapers
      @grimreapers  2 роки тому

      It's not like DCS, you can't just reset the race in IL-2 game, you have to reset the entire server, which becomes problematic. So we just have to put up with it.
