Congratulations on getting your cat to like the cat back pack. I've recently purchased one myself and am in the process of getting my cat to be familiar w it.
Good luck! I hope you and your cat have some great adventures together!
Thank you so much! I’m going to train my kitty soon and I’m excited! 😊
Good luck! It's super fun to take walks with your kitty! :-) For Tiger, a half hour is the right length of time.
Just got mine today. I guided him in with treats, went out for about ten minutes, and I’m going to leave it for the night to grow him accustomed.
That sounds like a great plan!
Your town is so beautiful 🥹
So, basically: Step 1 - have a really chill cat. Most cats would freak out at the "putting on a harness" stage already.
Of course, all cats are different! Some cats will want to try new things, and some definitely will not!
Thanks
i bought a harness leash and backpack the other day and im very excited! my cat loves opening my blinds and observing outside so im hoping he enjoys it. thanks for the video!
That is awesome! Wishing you good luck!
Odlični ste i vi i maca!!!
Hvala!
Thanks for sharing your tips, these are great!
Thank you so much! I hope more people will feel comfortable with taking their cats out in a backpack because of our video!
Considering trying this with my cat this summer!
Good luck! Little steps! We're looking forward for weather to be nice again so we can get Tiger back out!
Yes indeed I enjoyed the tutorial ! I'm expecting a Catpack soon for our Luther 🤗
Thanks so much! :-). Best of luck with your kitty in his backpack!
@@JenTheSingingTraveler will keep u posted on how we get on with him an his Catpack as it hasn't arrived yet 😜🤣🤗🙏🏿🐈
So funny..he's looking at the Free Cat on the roof.. Giving him a dirty look..and thinking " Hey!! No fair!" How come he's free?"
Trying to start backpack training with my kitten. I have been feeding him meals in the backpack with the escape hatch open. He's already adapted great to leash training. But I'd like to be able to transition from pack to leash so I actually want to change packs as the one I have isn't great for that and his first 'trip' was so-so, but he will hang out in the back to eat.
Yay! Sounds like you're doing all the right things! The thing that worked best for us was SHORT trips in the beginning. And our baby maxes out at a half hour. I wish you the best of luck with your kitten!
@@JenTheSingingTraveler He's also a little orange tabby like your kitty. 😄
@@TheDawnofVanlife Awwww! I'm sure he's adorable! :-)
just got it today im nervous bt have a good feeling thank you.
Best of luck! Little steps! We left our backpack out in the living room for awhile and put treats in it regularly so that Tiger would feel comfortable with it.
@@JenTheSingingTraveler yes did the same and a toy and a towell left it open today will be just there with her. interesting fact i got it from china and is a bit smaller than the ones on youtube video. and its the first backpack she didnt went in the first minute i brought it home.she goes in all regular backpacks and bags from store this one not. i guess i wait she goes half in eats treats and comes out.
Thank you so much, just wondering what harnesses do you use on tiger 🐅 (I have a fat cat 2)
Very nice Tiger cat and the video.
Will you please tell me what are the "few treats" you put inside the backpack?
Thanks for watching! We give him the generic cat treats from dm. He likes them very much! (He used to get Dreamies brand treats, but they have more calories, and he's too fat - so these dm treats have less calories.) I usually put about three treats in the bag beforehand.
Your cat is soo cute
Thank you! We think he's the cutest! :-)
@@JenTheSingingTraveler i am looking for a big size one that can take my tow chouchou cats
I cant wait to try this with my cat. I have this random dream to take my cat to a zoo but doubt they would allow that
I don't think they'll allow your cat in the zoo, but a nice walk around the neighborhood is perfect!
where did you get your harness from?
We got the harness with the backpack. The backpack is called the "Fat Cat Backpack" and Tiger's harness is size Large. (He's a big boy!)
Do you just put the cat treat at the bottom of the backpack? I’m still planning to do the same thing to keep my kitten calm. 😄
Yes - I put the treats at the bottom of the backpack. And I carry extras with me.
Do you have trouble with the bubble popping off?
We have not had a problem with it. (knock on wood!)
Thank you so much for this! I got a backpack for my cat, but she's very skittish, so it's a slow process for us. Just getting used to traveling around the inside of the house for now. XD
Good luck!! I'm sure your kitty baby will slowly get used to it, and you'll be out for an adventure before you know it! :-)
@@JenTheSingingTraveler Thank you! Looking forward to it! ^_^
Better than my kittens who both freak out
So sorry your kitties don't like it! Did you try putting treats inside the backpack?
@@JenTheSingingTraveler Yep, its funny cause they will play inside it when I'm not trying to take them on a walk
My kitten doesn't mind the backpack I think. She has no problem getting in or fighting to get out. she'll take naps when its open in my room. But when I take her out in it, she is constantly meowing. not even scraping inside to get out but just meowing while laying down looking outside of the mesh rather than the bubble. does this mean she doesn't like it?
That's really hard to tell. Every cat is very different. Does she seem distressed? Maybe she is just overwhelmed by all the new things she sees? Perhaps if you try it in very short spurts for awhile. Like, ten minutes max every time you do a backpack walk, and see how she reacts.
what harness are you using?
The one that came with the Fat Cat Backpack. It's a size large for cats.
With a good backpack would the leash be necessary?
Probably not? But I like to have him attached in, just in case something would happen. I'm a very protective pet parent.
@@JenTheSingingTraveler I am training mine currently to come hiking with me in a backpack. They are young and quite afraid, though.
@@LamiNalchor Make sure to always go slow, take SHORT walks, and let the cats decide how it goes. If they're too scared, then maybe give them a break from it. Not all cats will take to the backpack.
@@JenTheSingingTraveler You are right. Thank you.
I just got my kit…but my cat resists getting into the harness…:-( she will have none of it! Any advice on slowly getting her to accept being harnessed?
I'm not an expert, but maybe giving treats everytime you attempt the harness? That way she associates the harness with something positive.
@@JenTheSingingTraveler Yes - this is a good idea, and I have been giving her treats with harness time. She’s a smart cookie though… and I will have to be very patient.
Hey, you might not see this. I have two cats, siblings, they are both 7 years old aka around 50 in human years. One of my cats used to have bladder problems due to minor stress so that's a no go. However, she doesn't always show her discomfort because I put a collar on her, and she didn't seem to mind it, or maybe she didn't show the fact that she was uncomfortable? She's a sensitive kitty in that kind of way. She had to go to the vet a few months ago and was meowing in the car, stressed. Outside of the car in the carrier I think she kept quiet, but she looked stressed, I understand that there were a lot of animals, different smells and she didn't have time to get used to the surroundings or anything, yet the reason we had to go in the 1st place (twice) was because of the bladder problems. She gets anxious easily and is shy/awkward. Therefore, I'm not sure if I should take the risk in case of a more serious health problem (it passed away like half a year ago, but it may come back since it did twice). When I was younger, I took her downstairs (I live in a flat) without a leash or anything because there was no escape risk, she was very stressed but that's probably because it was a rapid moment and also, she didn't have anything to make her feel safe.
The other cat hates being picked up, I put a collar on him, and he instantly tried to take it off with his paw. He doesn't get stressed as much and is way more confident. He's only been to the vet like once to get spayed and that was years and years ago. I wasn't there to see how he reacted. I bet he'll hate the backpack and besides, he'll definitely hate the leash/harness as much as he did the collar. I'm not sure if I should even buy these things, it could potentially be a waste of money. I'm not planning on leash walking, I'm scared for their safety, I'm paranoid about it (my grandma's Russian terrier escaped her harness by backing away when she refused to go downstairs in a park, I was with my brother and she only ever listens to her owner, thankfully we secured it back on before she realized it was even off.) yet I'm not afraid of putting them in a backpack (ofc not at once)
Do you have any advice/thoughts about this/recommendations, or do you think I shouldn't bother trying?
Maybe clicker training for basic commands even "high five" could help with listening and positive reinforcement?
Both cats have been indoor cats their whole lives, we live on the 3rd floor, and they love the balcony and windowsills (they are very curious, esp. the second cat mentioned (boy))
I'd be grateful for even a short reply :)
I'm certainly not an expert, by any means. I recommend two different cat experts on the internet: Jackson Galaxy and the Kitten Lady. Both are really educated on all kinds of cat things. The main thing to remember is that all cats are different and all will act differently in certain situations. What one cat is comfortable with, another one will be stressed about. I wish you good luck if you try the backpack!
I need some tips to train my cats 2:31
my cat always runs and hides under thhe couch. any success stories with anyone?
I didn’t know there’s a clip inside backpack to keep the cat secure. My cat will wiggle himself out of any collar or harness, tried getting him more comfortable with it but to no avail
Yes, there's a clip inside that you can clip onto the harness. I find that the harness that came with the backpack is pretty substantial and might be really hard to wiggle out of. Good luck!
Do you recommend doing this multiple times a day? Or just once a day to avoid overwhelming them?
I wouldn't do multiple times a day, but that's just me. (And I'm not an official expert!) Each kitty is different. Once per day was enough for our Tiger.
Mine freaked out and shat himself
Oh no! That's definitely not the reaction one wants when trying something new with your cat!
What if the cat has to use the bathroom?
We've never taken our cat out long enough for that to be in issue. He doesn't like to go on backpack adventures for longer than 30 minutes or so.
You are lucky mine is crying and always run under bed
Awww - all cats are very different. Wishing you all the best and thanks for watching!
i want one of these so bad but can’t afford it :(
I hope you're able to get one eventually! Thanks for watching!
Got one! Working on training him now :)
I put my cat in the backpack and he starts freaking out meowing and crying. He won’t accept the treats... I don’t wanna stress out my kitty :(
awwww... I'm sorry to hear your kitty does't like it! I totally agree - you don't want to stress your cat. Maybe backpack adventures aren't right for your cat. Good luck!
start by getting the cat used to the backpack, feed him treats inside of it while the bag is still and on the floor, then when he's comfortable in it try picking up the backpack without moving and doing the same thing. Then do the same while moving inside the house and then outside, it's all about getting the cat used to it. In this video the person just went straight outside and that can be quite stressful for cats so don't feel bad if it takes a good few weeks for him to get used to it
and don't practice these with your cat for more than 5 minutes at a time and once daily, you don't want to overwhelm your cat or yourself
mybe wear it in front better? so i see how she feels.
Poor cat.. they are not meant to go in back packs! So cruel
Every cat is different and enjoys different things! It's always best to consider your individual cat's comfort and preferences. Some cats really love it, some don't. Also, different cultures and countries have different ideas about what is best when owning a cat. As an American, I believe cats should be kept indoors, where they are safest. (The predominant way of thinking in the US.) In Europe, many people let their cats out, where they get hit by cars or attacked by other animals.
You make it look so easy.
I can't even get my 5 month old kittie to stay still long enough to have her in her back pack without kicking.
I have to get her outside the apt to get her calm enough to have her in it.
Every cat is different. I have to wonder if some are just never going to be okay with the backpack? Not sure, but lots of treats and encouragement seem to help. Good luck!
@@JenTheSingingTraveler Trying to make her used ot it again.
Have put the pack sideways on the floor with some goodies and her favorite mouse on a pole.
She put herself inside of it by herself earlier tonight.
Challenge is to have her come inside it the next time I go outside.
I took off her harness yesterday.
Thought it started to feel and look a bit tight on her.
Now, I wonder if it was too soon.
@@JenTheSingingTraveler I wish there was a kitten school somewhere for 1st time cat parents.
@@bohemianwriter1 There should be! Have you watched some of Jackson Galaxy's videos? He's a good cat expert who can help first time cat parents. Cats are quirky, unique individuals, but there are some things that do apply to most cats. I also recommend following The Kitten Lady. Good luck! Cats really are amazing and wonderful creatures. They aren't blindly obedient like dogs; they see themselves as another individual person in the family. Wishing you all the best with your fur baby!
@@JenTheSingingTraveler I'd like to see someone manage to do this from the ground up with someone as half wild as my little fur baby to get her willingly in a harness.
lest time, i had to get help from a few of the employees at the pet store.
Now, my challenge is to get her in her travel pack without having to struggle too much. i took the harness off her. thought it may have started to look a bit tight.
Only for usage when we go outside on adventure.
how to make her associate it with that.
