I would fix that bolt setup. Anything that leaks any amount of coolant can let air into the system. That's when you get that up and down temperature issue. The coolant can't circulate properly. Thus why you're getting the air bubbles in the reservoir. The Bars leak probably plugged the hole. But i wouldn't depend on that "mechanic in a bottle" stuff it will only work temporary. Of course the best way to fix is to bite the bullet and do it the right way. Trust me i'm not hating here. Just speaking from personal experience.

=) The coupler was a quick fix after I forgot to put the hose back and the fan chewed it up =)......I had planned on adding an electric fan or 2 anyway ......I actually have the sender and could plug it properly but this makes for a great test setup.....The threads are so close I couldnt tell the difference when I put it on.....so I got to test the permatex thread sealant as well =).......Eventually I'll get around to a compression check. I have the Expedition so the Chevy's retired from haulin water while I slowly get her fixed up. Thanks for the comment Bud =)

I had a Nissan pickup that had that up and down temp issue. After checking everything and almost pulling my hair out. It ended up being the radiator cap. It had a bad seal Leaking air into the system. It only takes a small amount of air to make it overheat.

My 91 dually ext cab will over heat at after market gauge, 240° but laser gun temp on upper rad hose says 200°. Never bubbled over, at idol in traffic it climbs but driving it cools down. Ive changed everything possible. Even drilled holes in thermostat. No coolant leaks except the thermostat housing has tiny hole in the metal..what would you do? Mechanics are out of the question because they charge way too much.I'm in mesa az by the way.

Thanks for the comment....and subscription. The first two things to try are adjusting the valves (very easy) and an electric fan replacement. Sounds like an electric fan might cure your issue. Lots of people have had good results with replacing the clutch fan with an electric fan. The added power of removing the clutch fan is a nice bonus.
If your losing oil pressure and power like me, then you have an overheat situation despite what the guages say. I have an electric fan ready to go but it wont make a difference in my case......I can feel the excessive heat coming off the radiator with the clutch fan so I know it's good.
If you've tried everything else......the mechanical timing is off........Check and replace the gear and chain. Good luck with your truck....Hopefully I have a useful comment here....=)

nitebird scuffle one thing you could do in your case is pull your thermostat. Your truck will reach operating temp. If I watch my aftermarket gauge it gets to 240° but laser thermometer says 195°-205°. If I open my hood and idol it stays 200° on gauge and laser reads 180°...It's been 6 months doing this...any tiny leak will cause air into your system.Im doing my center carrier bearing tomorrow with out a press or bearing puller. Wish I had a camera to film it.
