it's pretty unprofessional... If you're doing such a clean at all, let alone over and over again as your job, you should have a mask over your nose and mouth every time... Their breathing is gonna be really bad.
I work for an HVAC company as a service technician and see some of the havoc caused by duct cleaners. #1 is improperly connecting to the ductwork. Sometimes they connect right at the furnace ducting and suck tons of dust onto the furnace blower wheel and AC coil, causing restrictions. #2 I’ve seen them pull return ducts joints apart in the attic, sucking in a bunch of blow in insulation into the ducting (Probably not their fault the joint was poorly done, but they just left it and didn’t say anything). Moral of the story hire professionals and inspect the ducting and inside the furnace after they’re done
I’m sure he’s weellllllllll aware of the serious risks associated with his job. Could’ve been done just for the video so he doesn’t look like he’s going on a space shuttle launch to potentially millions of people. Could also be that he’s an adult who’s willing to take calculated risks while being comfortable over wearing full PPE and being totally uncomfortable every single day. At the end of the day I’m sure most of us agree that he should probably at least be wearing a proper N95 and maybe some eyewear however that’s his decision to make not ours. I know some people who totally panic wearing face masks so you just never know the reason why.
We might be only seeing the demonstration parts of the vid so we don't see him wear mask. If he is going to do some serious dust cleening where he is expected to have chuck face full of dust then its safe to expect he is going to use a mask since he is a professional after all. Been watching a lot of videos on duct maintenance, leak fixes, and cleaning lately. This was pretty neat ! I must say though I got a real shock with the guy at the outdoor dryer vent using no eye protection blasting away with the air. Anyways, videos like this reinforce my goal of doing a good range of 10-year activities in my new construction home including ducts and vents.
I know when I worn plastic type safety glasses, especially whenever the forehead has a bit of a must forming from some perspiration on the edge of becoming a dripping nightmare.... The onslaught of dusty particles floating freely in my view .... especially the micro pieces of dust, dead skin cells floating, & unknown debris particles would cling to my glasses on both sides ... obstruction of my limited view...over 50 % reduction of clear sight ... & The naked eyeball is that much closer to getting a stray dust bunny cousin or so to poke me in the eyes or hang freely on my lower eyelid area or in my eyelashes... Where if I just closed my eyes in bursts as I cleaned out the vent ... Since the vent cannot move physically from the spot it's in...... Control the directions of where the dust flies.... & Be diligent on finding all the remaining stuff that didn't fully exit the targeted area to get cleaned ..... & Take that soft little ... Whambulance card carrying.... attitude of ....oh my gosh ...I'm gonna get filthy... Oh heavens...look at my clothes .. they have filthy all over them now & gosh ... It must be excruciating to breathe.... normally....as you obviously don't sit there with a mouth all jaw slacked like goober Pyle on AG Show ..... Daydreaming of the fun flavors of the fungi flying in the work space .... This is a bit of dirty ...but is it a hazmat level every time ....I seriously would doubt it ... And why point out all these mind blowing acts in their videos...if u WANT TO WEAR A MASK ....TTTT...TTT..IMMMMY...wear a flipping mask ...out on 2 pairs of safety glasses ....cover your tootsies up with a full coverall type of suit .. like painters & other cleaning crews wear on more risky type jobs . To prevent any contamination to invade your clothes or in your lungs or melt in through your epidermal organ.... It is indeed the largest organ people have ....so keep it healthy & throw some soap & water on the epidermal areas later that evening to be triple troubleshooter safe

A lot of that what you were sucking up when you were using the clear dome didn’t look like dust but looked exactly like the loose blow in ceiling insulation. Maybe it got in there in the install but the way it clumped and even had the same sort of mix of distribution of different colours in it, just like the insulation I have in my roof space
For the ones who reads this just know this is only the beginning keep pushing, grinding, and fighting. Whatever it is in life you want to do to go after it life is to short. Life is a marathon not a sprint so go out there and live it up I hope all is well and goes well for you peace and one love!

First of all some of this dust is clearly planted just for video purposes. Secondly, notice how all of the cleaning is taking place right at the air ducts, which is where all of your dust or debris would settle in your house. You can do this yourself easy. Just take off your vents and vacuum
The worst problem I notice is when the register and ducting is so rusty that bits are flying everywhere as I'm trying to clean. Is that affecting the supply air quality and should the rusty pieces be replaced asap?

The owner is cheap and doesn't see the value in it, but it affects your everyday life because so much dust is formed on everything in your home. Is it possible to rent the duct cleaning tools and do it myself? What about bugs and spiders, will that cause more of them to come out? I hate that it's not a standard in most apartments to get ducts cleaned.
If our air ducts were wrapped with asbestos, would this cleaning process disturb the asbestos and create even more trouble? If we don't remove the asbestos for these air ducts and just wrap them with insulated duct wrap, would that 100% prevent the asbestos to be disturbed and become airborne? Thanks!
Typically air duct cleaning is not this comprehensive. House without “50 years of smoking” does not need this service. More likely they need a real/honest hvac assessment that will find something besides dirty ducts
Yeah the fact that the coil, condenser, furnace, and blower fan weren’t serviced leaves a lot of debris, dust and stench in that house. They needed more done than just the ducts.

At our initial house warming party my brothe and my niece said their allergies were going through the roof. So we looked into the upstairs air intake grates in the hallway and it looked like the ducts were fur lined. As in pets for years. So I had the ducts cleaned and the fur lining was sucked all out of the system. Heavy smoking or a lot of pet hair or other reasons can make you ducts very dirty and need a cleaning.
They typically provide centralized heating and/or cooling. For example, my area is as cold as -40°C during winter cold snaps and as hot as 40°C in summer heat waves. Opening a window under those conditions would be less than helpful.
@@B.D.F. We have more a -10 to 35~40°C range but not every year. Not everybody have an air conditioning. We help us with fans and other methods. But there are one or another flat/house with air conditioning, but not in this way. To have it warm in winter we use heaters with water circulation. Isn't the heated air pretty dry?
Since the 1960's in Canada they have central heating in a lot of homes at least our did and it was built in 1960 and had he same oil furnace until it was sold in 2010, that 50 years.

The hot water is also heated centrally and then transported to the individual radiators throughout the building. the air in winter is also dry, but I imagine the air from the shafts is even drier. Added to this is all the dust if the shafts are not cleaned well.
I rent a home where this is desperately needed and they refused my suggestion! I've loved here for 6 years now! My power bill in the summer (June thru August) and the winter (december to February) is outrageous! These are the times my home air system is working hard to keep cool and warm! Is there something you could suggest that will help me clean these myself?

It’s only dangerous if you don’t educate yourself on proper home maintenance. Not everyone has this dirty of home. I do HVAC cleaning partly for a living and have seen money a home or business have almost new looking HVAC but they still hired us to clean it.

Heat rises, if you put them up high you'll never warm a house. Also most are placed near windows and doors, those are the biggest place cold air gets in so you heat that area.

I put a box fan on low, to pull the heat through the DR to LR, the latter has a reversible fan, so I pull the heated air through, up, or push it down - depending on temperature. Looking into hanging round, industrial ductwork from the DR through LR, as DIY. Put in double-paned sliding glass windows, for both sound and temperature control.
I have the ones in my condo cleaned yesterday. It’s been over 36 hours and every time I run the air there’s dust and black soot coming out. The cleaner said it has nothing to do with what he did but I can’t see how that’s true. It’s never happened before. Is this normal and how long does it last? Thanks.

Change your filter. Put damp t shirt over duct registers. Run your system, just on fan. For 5 min. Clean up. Change filter and should be good. Or call them to deal with their mess. You paid them. Talk to management of duct cleaning co.

Is this America?? Can someone explain why regular houses have air ducts? Asian here.. I have never heard of an air duct in a house.... Also, why have an air duct near the floor? Why not near the ceiling? That would prevent so much dirt collection in the air duct...
They have air ducts to disperse cool and hot air from the “air handler”throughout the home. In newer homes typically called “central heating and air”. A lot of old style mobile homes have air ducts on the floor, or even returns on the floor and airducts on the ceiling. but I have come across floor vents in a house. Terrible design to say the least …. Newer houses have air ducts on the ceiling or wall near the ceiling.
Well the machines they are using should be a lot more robust than just a shopvac. With the right technician you only need a 500 rpm fan with a brush line, air hose, and that plastic seal to do a really good job.
Where are the gloves??? They're touching this dust and debris and mold with bare hands. Other than that it looks like good work. They need to wear work gloves.

Maybe if you had your vent cleaned they do wear rotective clothing and a mask i dont recall goggles you can clean your ow n vent as well.

Change your filter. Put damp t shirt over duct registers. Run your system, just on fan. For 5 min. Clean up. Change filter and should be good. Or call them to deal with their mess. You paid them. Talk to management of duct cleaning co.

Also, why have an air duct near the floor? Why not near the ceiling? That would prevent so much dirt collection in the air duct...
They have air ducts to disperse cool and hot air from the “air handler”throughout the home. In newer homes typically called “central heating and air”. A lot of old style mobile homes have air ducts on the floor, or even returns on the floor and airducts on the ceiling. but I have come across floor vents in a house. Terrible design to say the least …. Newer houses have air ducts on the ceiling or wall near the ceiling.

Cleaning air ducts with a shop vac, brush line and a plastic cover should be illegal.
Well the machines they are using should be a lot more robust than just a shopvac. With the right technician you only need a 500 rpm fan with a brush line, air hose, and that plastic seal to do a really good job.

I'm not from America so bear with me on this. Are air ducts like this an American thing, I haven't seen them in Scandinavia or Australia (or anywhere in Europe come to think of it)?
If you have air ducts in a central furnace or central air then you have ducts unless your house has other types of heating and only have windows.
