There was initial joy. However, the men not only suffered from physical wounds but psychological also... How to find a place back in the family when the wife had been "head of the home" for so long, most also had PTSD which made building ANY relations VERY difficult....

My works were training awkward civilians into combat-ready infantry within two months. Some of my trainees were sent to Kimen or Matsu islets, roughly 10 km off the coastline of the authoritarian People's Republic of China(PRC) which repeatedly threatens to invade the democratic Republic of China with force. The two islets aforementioned were bombarded by PRC with heavy artillery from the 1950s to 1970s and many fatalities resulted from the artillery attacks. So I really understand what the lyrics " I watched a bunch of soldiers heading for the war , I could hardly even bear to see them go. " mean.
