Serena is such a lovely champion! And so is Sharapova. These women have been amazing and it was so nice seeing them fight it out in every grand slam.
Maria's footwork seemed stiff everytime she played against Serena, also I feel like Maria's mental always get to her, and of course credit to Serena for always bringing her A games everytime she plays Maria. I always thought if Maria can beat Serena again it'll be on clay, but that wasnt the case. Serena is far too strong for Maria, Serena hits harder, has better accurate serve, she has more spin to hit the ball deeper, and her defense is also on point.
Despite Serena dominance against Maria, can we just appreciate the time (2012-2015) when WTA had consistent top players (Serena, Maria, Vika, Aga, Li, Na, Petra and few more)... Those were the days...
Completely agree but,apart from the serve, I don’t think Serena hits harder,Maria does. It’s just Maria direction shots allow Serena to create more angles and she’s feeding her with pace wich allow Serena to redirect. Reason why after their AO Final ,Serena said Maria’s game suit her very well.
serena doesn't hit harder. maria just has V predicable patterns. and once on an on court interview serena said she likes playing maria bc she's always hitting in her strike zone
Talking about footwork, I think that was 1 of Maria's vulnerabilities. She was slow but at the same time very stiff in the direction changes. With Serena's angles this was like a hard test for Sharapova.

After a certain point, Serena having to face Sharapova in a GS final must've been a relief, because Maria was much more predictable. Now that Maria has retired, what will Serena do for a comfortable GS win? There's still two more GS left to claim for an all-time record and the new players are only getting better.
The problem is, after Sharapova shoulder injury she was never the same player. Her game became predictable and she can't use her signature reverse forehand after her shoulder injury anymore bcoz that could contribute to a much worse injury. So she went for a more conventional forehand swing with increased top spin. It creates more stability but it lacks the killer shots that she used to hit so brilliantly before.

Serena was top notch fit! Her fitness was on point and I just wish she would take it back to this and get her two slams to be on top of history even though she already there but I know she wants two more slams! With her lung issue she going have to focus on fitness n trying to strengthen her lungs so she have to get fit! WITH THAT SAID THICK SERENA STILL HARD TO BEAT! I want Naomi & Bianca to get introduced to the fit Serena that they never met only saw on footage
Outside of that one set lost in the QF, this was as dominant of a grand slam performance that I've ever seen from Serena. I would give 2010 Wimbledon and 2014 USO the other two dominant wins
Don't forget the Australian open in 2017 where she didn't drop a set

London Summer Olympics 2012 (where Serena didn't drop a set and comfortably beat everyone including Sharapova in the final).
@@sumnahlennon4516 Serena's 2017 AO GS run while pregnant was glorious from start to finish. Loved the final against Venus. They always deliver high quality showdowns. Felt like the early 00s again.

2015 aka Serena Slam 2.0. Her French Open wins always mean so much: the first in 2002, the second in 2013 after such a long gap, and the third in 2015 while sick with the flu. Serena went undefeated on clay that year to redress for a shocking R1 loss at RG in 2014. We'll see if she achieves a fourth.

This was their best final. Wimbledon 2004 and Australia 2015 are close seconds, but this match despite being 6-4, 6-4 was really back and forth.
All of their actual finals were pretty great just not the 07 AO where Serena murdered Maria. But 3/4 were pretty entertaining
