They were paid with three square meals a day until threat has been resolved and they got heroic reputation in that village. It was also a proper cause to fight for. Then the threat was solved and so was their employment.
Saw this for the first time last night at my local Imax, 4k restoration for the 70th anniversary. Amazing movie. Of course some details are dated like the bald caps, but I grew up with my grandparents so I'm used to watching movies from the 40's-60's. It couldn't take away from the fact though, that I could see the cinema heritage I'd heard so much about. Kyuzo was such a badass. Probably the best moment of the film is when he comes back with the gun nonchalantly and says 'killed two' and goes for a nap 😂 His death hurt, as it did with Kikuchiyo who was the heart of the movie and went out as he lived, with style. Very poignant ending too...'We lost again'.
The station i was watching this movie on cut with 7 mins remaining. Had to come find the ending. Great movie and amazing cinematography. The death acting was on par as well with the brutality of war.
“The victory belongs to the peasant not to us” greatest ending ever in a few words
RIP my boy Kikuchiyo
But he died in the most beautiful death of the movie, by doing the coup de grâce, respect 🙇
No pay, no glory, no reward. They fought because it was right

This is as bittersweet as it gets.
greatest movie ever recorded
This is what I call a perfectly executed we won but at what cost moment
well they accepted to fight for someone else, for just food. they had no reason to fight but they made their choice.
A few bowls of rice
Tears from my eyes. I don't cry easily but this scene it's able to make me very sad.
A movie ending more epic than this...u have got to be kidding me🔥🔥
damn by end scene you really meant END

Heartbreaking ending, despite the "victory"
Love how this shows if they only got four they’d be cooked
Good point, well-said.
Well the old man figured they’d need at least 10
