Hope you enjoy the first of a few videos on the Vijayanagar Empire! Quick Editorial Correction: Chatagai Mongols should actually be "Chagatai" Mongols. For some interesting history tidbits, check out my instagram: instagram.com/oddcompasshistory/ Now, just a couple of ground rules: 1) please keep discussion civil, and 2) let's avoid modern political talk. Modern political narratives often infect discourse around history, and this is especially true of Indian history. We deserve better. Consider, for example, the modern political discourse around Alauddin Khilji. People often characterize Alauddin as a religious fundamentalist, but in truth, he was likely just a brutal opportunist. Few realize that he was actually blasphemous and attempted to found a new religion with himself as the prophet and Ulugh Khan (and others) in high positions. Ulugh Khan warned him that doing so could lead to widespread rebellion, and so Alauddin decided against founding this new religion. Interesting stuff. Anyways, thanks so much for watching. I promise, the best is yet to come!
Odd Compass Hi, I love your videos and the way you present them . What app do you use to make these videos or would you be able to show me how to make these ? I have an assignment due this Friday (March 6th, 2020) and I really want to make a video like this . I would appreciate any help !

@@yogeshjog6072 Hey Yogesh...my clip on UsefulCharts video was not an advertisement for a larger video on my own channel -- it was just a short clip as part of our mini-collab. If you'd like to learn more about Deccan culture in medieval times, I recommend my Malik Ambar video (it goes into various aspects of the Deccan in more detail).
You might find this interesting to know that the disaster of devgiri/daulatabad move by Tughlaq was so bad that even today many people in many parts of India still use "Tughlaq" as an insult to call someone stupid. I have heard many of my fellow telugus use it.
the present CM of Andhra Pradesh Jagan Mohan reddy called as Tuglaq, he too changed the capital of andhra which is in the centre of the state into three capitals.
Great content! At last a youtuber who is covering Indian history without any ideological bias. Hope u make more videos on Indian history since it is so less known. You have earned a subscriber.
Thank you so much! I strive to be neutral while researching and discussing these important historical events and people. I’ll be making many more videos about Indian history (along with other Asian history videos). In fact, my next video is on War Elephant history and strategy in India. Enjoy the channel!
This is important. Many people fall in to political traps of glorifying some cruel rulers, and demonizing some even lesser cruel dynasties bcoz they belong to some other religions. Being neutral is important for a student of history
Just discovered your channel through the Rajendra Chola video, and I am loving it. We Indians never learn these things cause our syllabus is limited to Indus Valley, Mauryas, occasional Guptas, Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Independence Struggle. 7:21 I'm not sure what source you read but calling the entirety of Tamil Kingdoms a tributary to Khiliji and the Delhi sultanate is laughable and extremely ignorant. They were able to grab a small part in Northern Tamil Nadu close to Telugu lands but the rest of the land was under the Pandyan Empire and in a civil war, sure they were able to sack Madurai but the feuding Princes decided to call a truce on the civil war and attack him head on and the Delhi forces turned tail and ran back up to Delhi with as much treasure stolen from Madurai that the Muslims recieved when they SACKED Delhi

@@OddCompass 1st line was enough. Didn't need to hear the rest. But still you seem to have a lot of white bias. BTW all history is mostly war except for Indian history. It is actually less war and more about culture, civilization, art, music, literature, architecture and many more things. PS all UA-camrs buy all of their comments from India including you.
@@samanya_jeevi We have to be careful. These people invaded India once. We often go with this theory that Indians were good-hearted, naive etc. But what is the truth actually about what happened over the time period of 1000 AD to 1400 AD? Some trend took place and even the wisest of wise, and the strongest of strong in India couldn't oppose that trend (though they did well in saving our culture, so kudos to that).
@@seanras4046 As far as my reading of military history is concerned, most Indian kingdoms and armies had experience mainly fighting amongst themselves. They were not used to outside enemies very much after the Gupta empire. In addition, scientific temper had fallen drastically and blind devotion in the form of Bhakti movement started taking over. So, you see that in most battles, Indian kings and armies were very overconfident, so much so that even after initial Islamic invasions began, they continued to fight amongst themselves and included betraying one another. For example, Ghazni's first invasions were not repulsed comprehensively because he was not interested in annexing but only looting. The tactics for that would be quite different from an open battlefield. So, he succeeded. Indian kings were not used to such large scale thievery nor were they used to horse archers. After that, they continued to bask themselves in their own peoples' praises. Following which came Ghori. At the time of Ghori, the Chauhans of Delhi, the Gurjara Pratiharas of Gujarat & Palas in the East were constantly fighting one another. Ghori's first defeat was against Chauhan alone and gave Chauhan extreme confidence, But, Ghori went back reconsidered his tactics & retrained his army for a repeat assault and succeeded. And, of course, you know the stories of Jaichand etc. Even in this video, if you notice, when the Yadavas are attacked by Delhi, their army was attacking Hoysala. Similarly, later on, the Telugu Nayaks lost to Vijayanagara in the triangular fight with the Bahmanis. The basic point to understand is that India was never a single unit and there was no concept of India & Indians per se. I really doubt that even Chanakya thought in those terms because I think he was more concerned with religion what with Buddhism and Jainism already becoming popular and now the Greeks coming in militarily. It is only the foreign invaders who considered the Indian subcontinent as a political unit. Those from the West made the Indus river as a border while those from the North considered the Pamir knot & Karakoram range and those from the East considered the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau. Modern Indians fail to understand why India lost because they are still not willing to accept that India during anytime in history was never a single political unit and never defended it as such. You can read the East Indian company and British colonial history & Mughal history to further prove my point. Those who found it opportune to do so served them to conquer the rest of India but if their masters did become weak at any point, the same would snatch the opportunity to become emperors themselves like Himachandra etc. Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism was understood in those days more as a personal duty to achieve the best rather than a team mindset where everyone coordinated for a particular goal. The GAMESTOP episode is a very good example about how Western society psychology & Eastern society psychology differs. Look at how disparate people from normal backgrounds and amateurs ended up teaming up for a single goal. The authorities have tried to thwart them but the fightback still continues. Such an issue is a rarity in Eastern societies where authority is respected whether corrupt or not. People do not care whether the authority is morally or ethically right or not, they just join up with whoever is in authority to survive and get richer. The consequences, in Hinduism, is usually left to God [as per Bhagvad Gita]. Hence, it is first & foremost a concept of whether you have it in your head and in your hands whether you can do it or not and second, whether you can team up to do it or not. And then, Hindus should be bothering about leaving the consequences to God/fate. Scripturally, this is the order in which action is prescribed in the Bhagvad Gita but the scriptures have been so distorted in their understanding and preaching that historically, we have been doing the whole thing in reverse.
Is it a sign that I, an American, have played too much Europa Universalis that I know a lot of these cultural and regional terms without ever having opened a book on Indian history or paid much attention to India?
@me bravo haha, no I'm not a leftist though. Problem is, everyone is polarized these days. Some historians say crap about our heritage, some say we had atom bombs 2000 years ago. We are in the endgame now.
@me bravo How dumb. Everyone left wing is not a Communist, the same way everyone in the right wing is not a Nazi. Would you like it if you are called a Nazi?
Indeed! And interestingly, that's been the case stretching even farther into the past. No Northern power has ever held the Deccan region for more than a few decades -- not the Mauryas, the Guptas, the Delhi Sultanate, or the Mughals.
I'm getting a feeling that Aurangzeb was rebirth of Muhammad bin Tughlaq : both were religiously intolerant, ambitious to conquer Deccan, moved into deccan with vast army and all of their nobility, faced tens of rebellion and eventually after them the empire broke.

One thing for sure, when it comes to fighting against Mughals, Kannada and Telugu people from south India played a major role.

Correct -- and thanks for the additional in-depth info. I believe that (after the fall of the Madurai Sultanate in 1370) the Pandyas were made a feudatory kingdom to the Vijayanagar Empire. Later on in the Vijayanagar Empire, the Tamils in directly-ruled regions protested for tax reforms and more autonomy, and were granted it. Glad to have such thoughtful viewers!

I am a history geek from Hyderabad and I always have a hard time explaining my friends the origins of Muslim rule in the South India. Thanks for this video, I have been long waiting for a decent history channel which talks abt the amazing almost forgotten history and yours is the best, as I see that your focus is on Undiscussed history my humble suggestions are the Kakatiyas, Satavahanas, Telugu Sultans and how being muslim rulers managed to have people support during anti Muslim moment in the south and History of Hyderabad( of course im biased) right from being the puppet city of the Golconda(1400's) to the richest princely state in all of Independent India(1947).
That is so awesome to hear! My family is also Hyderabadi, so you and I have many of the same interests: including the Satavahana and the Kakatiyas. I also get frustrated with how the general public perceives the South - as though we do not have a longstanding relationship with the Islamic world. I think the relationship between Hindus and Muslims in Telugu country is quite fascinating. Before the Recherla Reddies joined Vijayanagar through marriage into the royal family, they actually were allies of the Bahmani Sultanate and helped the Bahmanis get independence from Delhi. My upcoming video is on the Fall of Malacca (SE Asian history, with some Indian references) but after that I’ll be returning to the subcontinent for a military strategy video and many others.
@@OddCompass Exactly, the muslims who ruled Telugu states are quite different from that of their northern counterparts, people have a hard time understanding this, most of the people who are pro Hindu just assume that Muslims in the south just ruled in order to make fortunes but that's far from the fact, they were actually the most secular rulers and they actually believed the Telugu land to be their home and its citizens their own people. The Unity among the Hindu-Muslim community at that time in Golkonda region was Uncanny. When the dehli sultans came to south India, they massacred 12000 devotees who were trying to protect their temple. They looted the Srirangam and Madurai temples and killed anyone standing on their way. Its described that the heads of Brahmins were hung like coconuts on trees.

I am here after listening to you on Brownpundits. Love your channel There are multiple theories about origins of Vijayanagar empire. Most accepted one is that, they were Kannadigas serving with Hoysalas and not Kakatiyas. It is kinda controversial lol I am a Kannadiga, but had never heard about Harihara and Bukka's capture and conversion to Islam. That's an interesting version
Thanks Kishan! Glad you’re enjoying the channel. I totally agree that there are multiple origin theories - I’ve pointed this out on some of my other comments, but the current position of most historians is that these multiple origin theories were intentionally encouraged by Harihara and Bukka Raya as a means of legitimizing themselves to their multiethnic, multilinguistic polity. Very interesting stuff!

I'm From Warangal, these things have never been said in our history books. All we've been taught in our school history is "Akbar: The Great" and You missed the part when Delhi Sultanate renamed Warangal(orugallu) as Sultanpur after the annexation of Prataparudra, later it is renamed back to Orugallu after the recapture by the rebellions Mansuri Nayak and Reddis. Also, there exists speculation that Kohinoor Diamond was an ear ornament of the Hindu Goddess Bhadrakali Idol in the Bhadrakali Temple of Warangal.

Nice I love videos about part of history I know nothing about! I recently started getting more interested in Indian history. I see in the video description you advice against John Keay's work, which I was planning to get as an introduction to Indian history. I was wondering if you can recommend any other book/books that cover all of Indian history?
Thanks so much! I hope you check out the latest video (on the Rise and Fall of the Vijayanagar Empire), as it's sort of a "sequel" to this one. As for books, John Keay is fine as a broad overview, but I just caution readers to be careful with some of his conclusions and focus. Much of his scholarship is focused on north India, so just be aware that his contextual background is going to be impacted by that (i.e., he will attempt to draw a unifying historical narrative thread in eras where South India was doing its own independent thing). Also, just be careful not to accept all his numbers as true -- for example, he believes Ferishta's numbers on deaths caused in battle, without considering the conflicting numbers from other courtiers and travelers of the time (or the fact that Ferishta was paid to essentially be a propagandist for his Sultan). He also claims that Indian kingdoms did not cause civilian deaths until the late medieval era, but that is just clearly untrue and has been disproven thanks to translated Chalukya and Chola inscriptions, among others. I honestly don't think there's a lot of other good overview books...sadly, this will have to do! My TRUE recommendation is to ignore the instinct to read Indian history as "one" thing. It is more like Europe from a historical perspective -- ethno-linguistically and politically different, with some shared cultural trends. I recommend reading about one major empire and going from there. For an exciting and "representative" narrative, I highly recommend Manu S. Pillai for new readers of Indian history. I think you'll find that it gives you an "overview" as Deccan history is a microcosm of the history of the entire Indian subcontinent. Thanks for subscribing!

Proud of the Telugu Nayaks. They managed to set aside their differences and truly understood the value of freedom. All 72 of the former Kakatiya war chiefs united to thrash the Delhi Sultanate, fighting a guerrilla style war before laying siege and retaking the ancient Telugu capital Warangal. Can't wait for the day when we toss out our caste identities and unite for the benefit of our people.
People commenting about Kerala region wasn't conquered by many- Only Cholas and British could subjugate Kerala because 1) They had powerful navy to control Malabar ports 2)Only ports were resourceful there; Malabar region is full of Forests, mountains and beaches. No big resources. 3) During Vijayanagar Kerala kingdoms were vassals of the empire 4) During British rule, Travancore was a vassal state. No use in conquering entire kerala region, only need to control the ports.
Great information. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your work. It would be great if you can make a special video about musunuri nayaks (Telugu warriors). They are the first group to fight back, which inspired other kingdoms to fight back as well.

Hi there, glad you enjoyed the videos! I'm really swamped this week, but I can hopefully give you some information and guide you to the correct resources. I use two programs: Adobe Illustrator (to draw the images) and Adobe AfterEffects (to animate movement). I believe there are free alternatives to Adobe Illustrator, but I'm not sure if there's a free alternative to AfterEffects. You could probably use a video editing program (like DaVinci Resolve) to animate basic movement and text. I'd highly recommend using tutorials on UA-cam to learn -- that's how I've learned, though I'm still a beginner. Good luck!
Hats off to Vijaynagar, Kakatiyas, Bahamani & other South Kingdoms. While North India was under oppression you kept the India’s culture & religion alive.
Most of the temples in north India is lost due to muslim rule, Because of the southern's fight, even south India would have looked like north with very less temples. Compare the number of old temples in north and south, you will easily understand.
@yushuva veera ballala 3 did not succeed in defeating madurai sultanate. And he almost succeeded in capruring madurai from muslim sultan, but got backstabbed and killed. After his death, Madurai was captured from muslims by harihara and bukka raya, who would go on to create Vijayanagara empire. I think veera ballala 3 should be recognized for repelling much powerful delhi sultanate for more than 50 years. And riding into battle at age if 75 to capture madurai.
@yushuva not exactly. Muslims captured madurai from pandyans kn 1323, then it was pandyans who moved their capital to tenkasi. After veera ballala 3 death, lot of factions emerged from the crumbled hoysala empire. Harihara raya was quick to subdue all of them, then marched to madurai, and drove the muslims out of south india. Pandyans might have been vassalised by Vijayanagara empire, but they still ruled from tenkasi till 1650. All of the madurai sultans were intolerant. There are written records of how tamil hindu men were used for hunting, how they were impaled with stakes, tamil women were raped, pregnant women were hung upside down.
There are poems my Indian friends were taught that told the tales of temples being pillaged, hindu women being raped and converted, and forced conversions being rampant.
@@A_Shanto nope.. When religion was practiced more thoroghly, Hindus were taught to treat other women like sisters and godesses. AFAIK and have heard/read, yes, there was a bunch of infighting, but women and other religions were always respected. There were laws.. It is all detailed in "Yoodhneeti" look it up. But Muslims were lawless. Still are.
There are many theories, and no definitive answers! Here’s a few points worth noting: 1) Kerala is difficult to invade overland due to its unique geography, and it had naval superiority making a sea invasion problematic, and 2) Kerala was well connected to the Arab world and the Chinese through its trade networks, making it “protected” by virtue of those interests.
But I've read that kerla was conquered by Tippu sultan, and he had massacred many Namboodari rulers. He had changed the names of most Kerala cities to islamic names. Untill he was defeated by the British army he had the control on most part of Kerala.
The Western Ghats were impassable from the North. Kerala was accessible only thru the Palghat pass. The Tamils had conquered the region during Chola period. Tippu Sulthan briefly held some part in the Northern part of Kerala. But there were also not a lot of natural resources there.
Hope you enjoy the first of a few videos on the Vijayanagar Empire! Quick Editorial Correction: Chatagai Mongols should actually be "Chagatai" Mongols.
For some interesting history tidbits, check out my instagram: instagram.com/oddcompasshistory/
Now, just a couple of ground rules: 1) please keep discussion civil, and 2) let's avoid modern political talk.

@@samanya_jeevi We have to be careful. These people invaded India once. With blessings of the gods
Haha, perhaps - but now is as good a time as ever to learn about Indian history beyond EU. Welcome to the channel!
@me bravo should people start trusting capitalist conservative orthodox eastern historians or something ?
@me bravo haha, no I'm not a leftist though. Problem is, everyone is polarized these days. Some historians say crap about our heritage, some say we had atom bombs 2000 years ago. We are in the endgame now.

There are multiple theories about origins of Vijayanagar empire. Most accepted one is that, they were Kannadigas serving with Hoysalas and not Kakatiyas. It is kinda controversial lol
I am a Kannadiga, but had never heard about Harihara and Bukka's capture and conversion to Islam.

Which history books did u read?
Most of ncert level is indeed filled with delhi centric detailing.

The Dandakaranya Region(southern half of Chhattisgarh, southeastern Madhya Pradesh, parts of western Odisha, parts of northern and eastern Telangana, eastern Vidarbha and some parts of northern Andhra) was under Gond Kings' Rule for many years.
Kerala was never conquered . Even under British rule, we had puppet kings .
Take a terrain view on google maps and chart how the invasions came , youd see kerala is completely protected by the western ghats, with only a small pass to guard. I assume Odhisha will have a similar feature with the eastern ghats. rivers play a part too. Geography is the major constraint in those times.

10:20 The Delhi Sultante map showin the complete annexation of Tamil Lands is completely ridiculous, I'm guessing you used an North Indian history book which shows that figure lmao. No credible historian believes that in fact the opposite is true, Look at maps made by Western academics and none show the Delhi sultanate annexing the entirety of modern day Tamil Nadu at most they came to Thajavur and ofc the later annexation of Madurai but that still left the entirety of half Southern and Western Tamil Lands free.
Thanks for highlighting history of Bharat.
These videos are so damn interesting! I wish history was taught to us like this!
The effect of geography on political decisions and economics and warfare is an intriguing concept on its own.
Telugus must unite and boost there fighting spirit which once our ancestors had

People commenting about Kerala region wasn't conquered by many-
Only Cholas and British could subjugate Kerala because
1) They had powerful navy to control Malabar ports
2)Only ports were resourceful there; Malabar region is full of Forests, mountains and beaches. No big resources.
3) During Vijayanagar Kerala kingdoms were vassals of the empire
4) During British rule, Travancore was a vassal state.
No use in conquering entire kerala region, only need to control the ports.

But sadly, Turks destroyed Hampi, razed it to the ground. What are your thoughts about Hasan Gangu?
The nobility of the Deccan Sultanates were comprised primarily of Dahknis and "Westerners" from Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, and Persia (not actually Turks). But there were many fumbles that led to the destruction of Hampi, and certainly the razing of Bidar and Ahmadnagar didn't help matters. Good luck!

you forgot to talk about the last hoysala king veera ballala. He was 75 years old, when he tried to defeat Madurai sultanate and almost succeeded.
Thats ordainary things during medieval war even before muslim come hindu king destroy temple rape women with other Kingdom
@@A_Shanto nope.. When religion was practiced more thoroghly, Hindus were taught to treat other women like sisters and godesses. But Muslims were lawless. Still are.
Why was Kerala never conquered? Even the Mughals never conquered it. It seems like either we were military geniuses or completely irrelevant.
