Me and my daughter were headed to the Brooklyn Art Museum from Manhattan, and in some random subway station we were looking at the map, and a kid on a skateboard zoomed up and stopped and asked where we were going. We told him and he immediately told us exactly what to do. It was both weird and amazing.
What's cool about the Brooklyn museum is it's got the botanical gardens just across from it - and the museum itself is an underappreciated gem.
On my first morning in NY last October, I was looking for One Schubert Alley in the theatre district. I clearly looked lost and a guy working construction across the street called out and asked if I needed help with directions. He was so friendly and helpful and made me feel welcome the city.

The drinking water myth surprised the hell out of me. I was always told we have the cleanest drinking water in the entire US.

Wow Jon! As a born and raised native New Yorker I really want to thank you for your effort and respect in accurately capturing the essence of New York. I rarely comment on UA-cam but just had to give you props! You were absolutely spot on! Unlike another popular UA-camr ($) whom I recently unsubscribed from for sensationalizing and exploiting the problems we are currently experiencing. As a retired FDNY Paramedic Captain, I know the 5 boroughs like the back of my hand, and I can give you a tour anytime! I am so that girl who walks by and gives you directions without breaking stride, so that qualifies me to officially acknowledge you as a fellow New Yorker!!

Whenever I needed help during my stay in NY, there was always somebody to help me. I knew I could ask for help and I got it. Of course I avoided asking those in a hurry - but it is a general rule ;). When I got a panic attack getting on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, I wanted to leave and I would have missed a great day visiting Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Then a great NY guy just stood there with me, calmed me down and walked with me onto the ferry.
#13 reminded me of a funny Story. Was with my dad in NYC in 2022. In a bar a guy recognized we were from Europe even before saying anything. How? We were wearing jeans shorts xD
They're actually called "jorts" here. You'll see a lot of creatures in Walmart wearing them 😅
Thank you for debunking a lot of these myths. The one that annoys me the most is that ppl really think Central Park is the only park not only in Manhattan but the entire city. When in reality, NYC has over 1,700 different parks. I love Central Park, but if I wanna get away from tourists, I go to Morningside Park, Riverside Park, McCarren Park, Fort Greene Park, etc.
Also, the idea that NYC is just Manhattan is ridiculous.
And yes, celebrities are definitely NOT everywhere. Although, I will say I’ve had a fair amount of celebrity sightings living here. I once took the 1 train and sitting right across from me on the car was Claire Danes. We rode for several stops until she got off. And another time, I ran into Tony Shaloub on the subway (I think it was at 34th Street - Herald Square). There have been a bunch of others but for some reason, it tends to be mostly on the subway lol…
I wish LA had parks like Prospect, Central, the High Line, etc
TBH If you say "New York" when talking about the whole state most people just imagine NYC or more specifically Manhattan and they completely forget Upstate also exists

I spent xmas this year in NYC from the UK and despite what people say about New Yorkers being unfriendly….they were probably the most pleasant and friendly people ive ever come across. And super super helpful
i was there from Australia last year and had the same experience, they give you directions when youre lost and will just strike up conversations in public - enjoyed america very much
You have no clue. New Yorkers are the rudest most miserable people next to Londoner's. (I've lived there too for years) I've been here all my life, you never even say hi to your neighbor's. I once said good morning to some guy walking his ugly little rat dog and he just gave me a dirty look and muttered some insults under his breath as he scurried away. That is a typical New Yorker. You probably only went to the tourist areas and met transplants from other states who aren't as rude. Been here most my life and still live in this hellhole unfortunately. If I could leave I would.
@@humble_frog Have just been to New York airports, but the flight attendands on the flights were New Yorkers and they have been very kind and we had a many viery good conversations!
My husband and I went to NYC in October last year for our 15th wedding anniversary and I fell in love with the city. Everywhere we went--all the restaurants from the deli to the nice restaurants, the attractions, museums, the bus drivers, etc were kind and very helpful with great customer service. We had a few interactions with local New Yorkers too and they were kind as well so I agree that the myth about rude New Yorkers is totally busted.
It is true that it's expensive there but we were careful about where we went except for the last two days--we splurged since it was our last two days there but other than that, you can find cheap places to eat and we stayed at a hotel in Queens so we had to use the bus to get to the subway which was good because we saw the real New York and commuted with the regulars into Manhattan instead of being around all the tourists all the time. It was an enjoyable experience and yes, I had no ill effects from drinking the water.
Just got back from a few days of vacation in NYC and I agree with most of these! 1) I didn't find people to be rude. They were mostly polite and responded to politeness with the same. If you didn't need to interact, they mostly minded their own business, which isn't rude. 3) NYC was expensive, especially food and every attraction/museum we paid for, but it wasn't unattainable as a vacation spot. 4) We took a tour of Brooklyn Heights and learned more about the boroughs and their history. Very interesting. We spent a lot of our time in Manhattan, but would love to explore other areas next time. 6) Central Park was still very nice to visit. We were surprised at the terrain. 7) The Broadway theaters aren't very big and sitting in the cheaper seats can still give you an awesome experience. 9) I was surprised at how early many things closed. (We weren't looking for nightlife.) 12) We drank the tap water the whole time and it was fine. Better than some other places I've been. 13) Maybe they don't "only" wear black, but it was definitely the preferred color!
Was just there last weekend myself, now granted doing the midtown Manhattan thing but had a good time, shoulder season to be sure, had a couple serious quality meals as well as street food, rode the metro a lot, sure a few crazies, but not a problem. chatted w/some true New Yawkers had an enjoyable time.

MYTH Every year we visit and we always meet the nicest New Yorkers! In January we were walking around the Tudor Bridge and met a friendly gentleman walking his dog. We talked for almost an hour! 😂We love visiting the burrows! That’s where the best food is😋

I am from the midwest and am in New York frequently. I like that no one pays any attention to each other and there is no reason in a large city to be fake nice to hundreds of people you pass by. BUT, if there is a reason to interact, it's great. So many people have helped me when I asked for directions or assistance. And, last time I was there a woman fell in a crosswalk and EVERYBODY rushed to help and see if she was okay. I love NYC and the people.
I was in the theater district making a video for my own channel about not getting lost in NYC, when someone thought I was actually lost and stopped to point some in the right direction, lol.
Also, I live right by one of the reservoirs in the Catskills that supplies NYC drinking water. My wife and I go fishing there and it is the cleanest, best tasting fish you will ever eat.

Just visited nyc, John your advice over your clips was awesome. Stayed in battery park. i was expecting the people to be rude and rush, but found this was far from the truth. such a good time i am already planning to come back. THANK YOU FOR AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE NYC!

Looking forward to being back for a couple of weeks, starting next week. And when I say back, I mean back. Staying at our former neighbor's apartment down the hall from our old apartment in the co-op where we lived for fifteen years. Going to doctors and getting haircuts. Grabbing a beer at my local. Bagels. Corner diner. Getting on the East River Ferry at Carl Schurz. Walking. Quick trip upstate. We left, just in time, for elderly family, but we miss it.
I was in NYC in February, found it to be, beautiful, vibrant, energetic, enjoyable, amazing food, no nonsense people, hard working, delicious food, I NEVER FELT UNSAFE walking the streets, riding the subways, in fact I’m going back around Christmas time, ( I will never ride the subway in Los
Angeles because they are in fact very dangerous and dirty! ) I will, however ride the subway in New York. Can’t wait to go back, I ❤NY.😊
Our trip to NYC was amazing this year!! The people were so nice. I spotted the Chrysler building during a walk and some guy walking by told me the best block to take a photo of it. (E 36th and 3rd Ave. apparently.) We did see Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson at the same Broadway show we went to see, so that was a cool two for one deal. Thanks so much for making these videos as they were the perfect homework to get us excited and prepared for our trip!!

We're actually here now on a mini vacation. We've talked to a few locals and they were super nice. We were waiting for a bus today near Central Park and a guy came up out of nowhere and let us know they weren't running because of a half marathon. Then he offered to share a cab since he was heading the same way. Offered to pay for it. Grabbed some Royal Halal today for lunch, $20 for four of us. Just got to know where to go. Thankfully, there's a UA-cam channel for that. This one right here.
Just returned from NYC, best time ever! Super helpful restaurant staff, same for subway personnel and just regular people. Go to New York if you’re thinking about it. You won’t be disappointed.
As a New Yorker point # 4 irritates me the most. Especially when non New Yorkers talk about the city and show Manhattan lol. I live all the way in south Brooklyn. I could care less about Manhattan
English guy here - I’d heard about New Yorkers rudeness from a family friend who’s from New York, but now lives in Atlanta. I visited in January 2020 and everyone was awesome, whether it was meeting people in a bar, or chatting to people at a Knicks game
We stayed in Manhattan, just up from Times Square in November, and had a great time. Aside fro the bus tour pests on most corners, we didn't really have any issues. As you say in the vid, getting there and staying there are the expensive bits, but we found that most prices for food etc were relatively standard for most cities we've been to. Certainly not as much as I'd have expected for such an iconic and popular tourist trap.
Very good information here. I definitely would like to visit New York City, in the future. I have family members who have been there, and they said it was nice. Long, ago, in 1900, and in 1914, my maternal great grandparents, and my maternal grandfather came to Ellis Island, from Czechoslovakia and Poland. My maternal great grandparents were actually married in New York City, after they came there in 1900, and they lived there for a little while, before they moved to Canada. Cheers, Jon!
In 2017 I moved to NYC from Alabama. Lived there 5 years. I was there before pandemic, during pandemic and post pandemic. I left towards the end of 2022. I always tell everybody New Yorkers get a bad rap with the whole “New Yorkers are rude” thing. It’s definately a MYTH, and the way you explained it, is the EXACT way I explain it to people… they definately don’t do fake nice. They ARE genuine and quite pleasant actually. Also on occasion I also have eaten street food… (one of my favorites was the halal chicken and rice with white sauce and hot sauce and a salad on the side) NEVER got sick…who says NYC is only Manhattan? Never heard that one, but whoever says that they definately must have “ originated” in a foreign country and moved there. Each borough has a different energy/vibe. I’ve experienced 4 out of the 5. The 5 years I was there, never went to Staten Island. With that being said…4 out of my 5 yrs I lived in Queens. Queens was HOME. But I’d tell anybody on any day that Brooklyn is DEFINATELY my FAVORITE borough. It’s unfortunate I never got to actually live there… but Brooklyn is a VIBE HONEY! Lastly, NYC has the best parks! When I think about summertime in NYC I think about the parks and the different activities they can offer…yoga, meditation, concerts, plays, movie nights, picnics… there’s ALWAYS something new and exciting to do. Although I’ll never live there again, I definately DO miss NY and will always find time to come back and visit. ❤
As a Jersey Girl I grew up going to NYC. You can eat out for cheap and get really good food if you get out of the touristy spots. I love the people. It’s exactly like he said. And exactly how I am. I hate small talk and I hate always greeting people “hi how are you? I’m fine thanks how are you?” It’s a waste. I feel safe there and in spite of the horror stories you hear on some news channels you can walk around and not worry. I feel much more concerned in Atlantic City and in the greater Ft Lauderdale area. And I love NYC tap water, it’s the best.
New Yorkers are not rude I visited in 2021 and they were extremely friendly and awesome! I love New Yorkers!

Yet another excellent video Jon. Some excellent points mad win it. New York like everywhere is not perfect but the good far outweighs the bad. It will never be cheap though. That is one thing people have to realise before going. You have to watch that aspect. If anyone is new to Jon's videos or his channel then you have come to the right place. I was there last May- the locals were friendly and helpful. Waiters were amazing and the tap water was too!!

I live in Sheepshead Bay. Sheepshead Bay by train ( B or Q) is about 30-35 minutes from their 1st stop in Manhattan. New Yorkers i would say are decent people not rude..
Jon you forgot about sporting events. New Yorkers get along with each other. I am a Mets ,Brooklyn Cyclones and of course the RANGERS. I have friends who are Yankees fans, RANGERS fans and some are islander fans. Win or lose we all get along.

I love your videos. About 15 years ago I visited NYC the second time I found a place in the West Village on Craig's List, my whole stay was the price of 1 night in a nice hotel and mine was an apt. I did do my reseach and found some great bargins AND by the time I went home I was navigating the subways like a native. One piece of advice I have is do not overlook the mom and pop eateries or the small pocket parks as they can be amazing.
I'm glad to say that i didn't hold any of these myths/stereotypes before i visited in June 2022. It does amaze me how many people actually believe these things, it's not that difficult to do your own research but i guess most can't be bothered.
New York once had the reputation of offering the best drinking water possible. I grew up there, and happily and safely drank water straight from the tap. It may be different now, as New York water may have some zinc in it. These days, I drink filtered water, but I still think that New York City water is relatively good.
Wow! It’s been 4 years since you lived in the Village? I remember that! I’m itching to make a visit to see a particular Broadway show, but I’m having back issues with walking. And NYC is all about walking. Airports, train stations, subway stations, etc. My friend said something like, “I wouldn’t go right now. Too many immigrant issues, crime on the subways…. Even the rats are getting high on drugs!” My response was “It’s a part of NYC you deal with. There has been trouble ever since the first settlers built a wall to keep out invaders…. That’s even before the British took over the city during the revolution. That’s NYC.”
I have a hotel recommendation for everyone here: I go to the "La Quinta" on West 71st/8th Ave. It's right next to the lower end of Central Park, has a subway station right outside the hotel with quick access to the rest of Manhattan, and it's in a quiet neighborhood right at the edge of Lincoln Square. It's also a very affordable hotel when you book at the right times. I was able to stay there for 110 dollars a night last year during February, smack in the center of Manhattan in a beautiful nice neighborhood.
The only downside is the room is TINY!!!!! Like, super tiny. It is always very clean, and most rooms actually have a private micro-bathroom. And of course, its NYC so you gotta check out your bed for critters and make sure all it safe to sleep. I'd tell anyone to check their beds in any hotel in the world, but especially so when you are in a major city like NY or Chicago or Vegas.
On one of my visits to NY, I was trying to figure out how to buy a Metro card out of the machine in one of the corridors leading to the subway station. The man at the next kiosk over offered to help without being asked. That is just one example of how nice and helpful every NYer I met was. On another note, I have a particular hotel I like to stay in that is a bit pricey. However, after watching your video about the Jane Street Hotel last year, I perused their website and decided that's where I will stay next.
I would be cautious of this. I forgot which countries this happens in but if someone helps you they might expect you to pay them after.

Speaking of seeing celebrities, in the 1970s, I worked in San Francisco just down the block from the Curran and Geary theaters. On the streets I saw Katherine Hepburn, Burt Lancaster, Vincent Gardenia, Art Garfunkel, Myrna Loy and Vincent Price. Friend of mine saw Bing Crosby.
Thanks for great tips! I visited NYC 2 years ago and I absolutely loved it. Your tips came in very, very handy. And since you mention celebrities I am going to boast a bit now ;-) While visiting I saw 3 famous people-Luke Evans on his bike in midtown Manhattan, Trevor Noah with a group of friends in Tribeca and Matthew Macfayden at the airport. I was so thrilled about it. And P.S. I was in NYC for 10 days and haven't met a rude New Yorker. People were helpful and nice.
I live in Paris so I actually feel very at home with New Yorkers. Same situation people where I find the rudeness is more about directness.
That said hotels really are expensive. I do stay out of Manhattan but I still pay more to stay in Queens than I have a hot spot in Milano.
I don't think New Yorkers are rude they're just in a rush and if you get in their way they get upset. I'm from Michigan and I'm the same way.

I really enjoyed this video. I actually think that NYC gets a bad rap. NYC is the most vibrant city in the USA for sure and maybe in the world! Any big city has problems but I have always loved the pace of NYC. It’s expensive but so is quality.
And anyone who believes that NYC is just Manhattan is very obtuse.

@04:40 this is so true! i've been taking my daughter the nyc for our annual father daughter trip for a few years now and i've been having more fun exploring other areas beyond manhattan and using either subway, busses or ferry to get there, we have also stayed on staten island before for the beach people might not know nyc has atlantic ocean beaches similar to the jersey shore in ocean temps going out to rockaway for a day is also a fun trip espeically if you take the train that goes over the waterways i forget the a maybe?

We were in Washington Square last week visiting from Canada and saw Anderson Cooper walk by with a stroller.
I feel like celebrities hide in plain sight here. You see them out and about, you know who they are, but you leave them alone and keep it pushing. Through the years I've seen celebs like Lenny Kravitz riding a bicycle up 6th Avenue, Janet Jackson at a bodega, Maggie Gyllenhaal walking past my stoop, Nora Jones at Duane Reade, Orlando Bloom walking in Central Park, Jerry O'Connell by Penn Station, Adrian Brody in Williamsburg, Chris Noth, etc.

I’m from Alabama and I love when I meet New Yorkers! I have some in my family as well. We always have the best conversations and they are very straight forward but have had my back when needed. They’re definitely not for the sensitive though lol. Here in the south especially in Alabama we can be very passive aggressive and fake with you for sure unless you’re in a bigger city like Atlanta.

While visiting NYC, I stay at the Sheraton in Flushing. It's only a 5 minute walk to the 7 train.

I have made 25-26 trips to NYC from Alabama since 2007 and have never encountered anyone being rude… in fact, I would say most are more polite and helpful than people here in the “hospitable” South!
Moved here last week, it’s great. Very surprised at how nice people are.

For celebrities, I have seen quite a few but not expecting it. Mario Cantone was on the subway NYE a few years ago. I also saw Tom Ford walking down the street. My husband has seen so many he lost count! Tracey Ullmann in Bed Bath and Beyond is one of them. He used to be a bike messenger, so he did see and meet quite a few
I saw Woody Allan at toys are us in times square many years ago.
In New York people have a rude way of being polite, and in Los Angeles it's the other way around🥴
We're just back from an amazing week in NYC. Amazing in some parts thanks to your videos! The thing about the water... It's not that we thought it was dangerous, it's the taste, man! It tastes of chlorine! Everytime I go to the US I am amazed that Americans seem to have a desire to make everything smell or taste "clean". The water tastes chlorine, that means it's clean. The corridor in the hotel smells like disinfectant, that means it's clean. The towels smell like perfumed washing detergent, that means it's clean. No, clean water tastes nothing. It's so easy to spot when a NYC restaurant tries to sell you fancy water and you know it's straight from the tap. 😅
A restaurant has running water, they have the option to wash their hands. I wonder about those street vendors.
The only celebrity I've noticed, is Janeane Garofalo in the Village. Probably have been around others but in NYC you don't notice most people, lol.

I take the train into NYC, I find it’s better than traveling by plane. Only issue I had was disembarking off Amtrak and nearly getting lost on the Penn Station side vs Moynihan. Thankfully though easily readable signage helped a lot. Still easy to get lost

Too many bloggers lately are trying hard to badmouth NYC by exaggerating the real challenges chronically faced by this city and ignoring the bright side. They say crime is out of control, but in reality it’s still nowhere near the 1993 level. They say people can’t afford it anymore; yet I happen to be paying for three-bedroom less than what’s believed to be an average rate in other, cheaper cities. They say there’re rats and garbage “wherever you go”; yet, I don’t see much of it in the touristy areas, and while trash is a problem in outer boroughs, it largely varies by block, and even by building (some supers do their job better than others). So, I’m wondering what special interest groups promote these exaggerations. Is it the car dealers? The out-of-town real estate brokers looking for more business? The IT companies benefitting from remote work? Regardless, I believe this city will still make it.
3rd time I was in NYC, I was literally arriving to my airbnb on 57 btw 8th and 9 th avenue and Goldie Hawn came out of a building, right into a limo. In that same trip I also saw Alysia Reiner in Harlem, walking casually and talking on the phone.
I googled later and found out Goldie lives in that corner, another day we saw a limo and waited some minutes but no one showed up 🥲

I'm Australian and found New Yorkers to be friendly. I didn't find them rude at all. One of my favourite cities! (This was awhile ago though... not sure what it's like now with the homeless & crime I keep reading about on the Subway).
@07:06 an excellent trip you can take if you in manhattan to see this is taking the nyc ferry from one of the manhattan stops to throgs neck ferry point park.
As a born and bred Brooklynite, "The City" refers to Manhattan. Brooklyn, Queens, da Bronx and that island where they send cops the force wants to retire, aren't parts of The City. But yeah, we're all part of NYC, just not THE city.
I've never gotten sick eating food from a street vendor. And, I remember when the subway was 15 cents. And the Empire State Building was, what... $2.50?
When you were in high school did you have a city bus pass that reduced that 15 cent fare to 5 cents?

NYC tap water is actually very good and something the state and city take pride in.
Not only is the drinking water excellent, it’s the main reason the baked goods and the pizza are second to none as the water is used to make all the dough.

i mean its how you approuch people on the street ,i learned alot from these vlogs how to ask something like directions because i get it people wanna sell you stuff or ask for money so its the way you ask a person that does alot, what did surprise me is that when i took the subway in the mornig police was in the subway every morning but at night there where none .
