Why You Owe Your Pinafore to '50s Style - Fashion History by Gertie and Charm Patterns

- You might not think of aprons as belonging to the world of vintage glamour - they’re not exactly a thing you see on the red carpet day-to-day. But if you’re watching this, it’s more than likely that they’ve shaped some of your favorite wardrobe staples. To celebrate the release of the Cobbler Dress and Set, I thought I'd walk you through a brief history of the pinafore, from its functional origins to its modern day iterations. (A teenager told me about dark academia, everyone!)

Aw, I love Gertie does Dress History! I love all the UA-cam dress historians, but there's not a lot going on for anything after 1930, I'd love to see more of this!
Love wearing aprons, especially pinafore styles.
I also love jumper dresses and I never really connected the two. But, yes, you are right!
Thank you.
I LOVE fashion history, PLEASE keep doing it.
The pinafore style is so beautiful. Thanks for the history lesson.
Hi Gertie! I love watching documentaries about history influencing fashion and the evolution of style and function. I hope you do more of these types of videos. Thank you!
Lauren Bacall in How To Marry A Millionaire in that pinafore/jumper with the blouse with giant bishop sleeves 😍
About 45 years ago we sewed one in high school for our sewing project
I loved this video! I love fashion history and I hope there will be more videos like this in the future
I really loved this video since I absolutely adore pinafore dresses! Is there a pattern for the apron behind you?
Yes, the apron on the dress form is a combinations of our patterns. The bib portion is from our Loretta Shorts Pateron pattern. charmpatterns.com/loretta-shorts-pattern/. The skirt is the Charm Stanwyck skirt. charmpatterns.com/shop/stanwyck-skirt/
Thanks so much Gertie! Yesterday was my bday, and I was given two of your books as gifts - I guess I talk about your channel & style a lot! Loved this video, you have to be in to history with all that vintage glamor - myself included, I think your audience will be very in to these videos :D All the best!!
Happy birthday!!!
Golly, I grew up wearing pinafores, mom sewed then for all three of her daughters. She also had a wonderful hand made collection of hostess aprons. We all grew up stitching little handkerchiefs with embroidered flowers with fine rolled hems. Girl you take me back!
Fabulous! Loved hearing about aprons and their influence, would love more fashion history.
Would love this to be a series!
Here from TikTok. Love that pinafore dress ❤
You make fashion fun. I am way past this look but I love seeing you in it and it suits you so well. You are a fashion treasure! Thank you for bringing back some style again to women's clothes it has gotten very unattractive in the last few decades. We used to make those gingham aprons in home economics class back in the 60's had to embroider it too. Mine was lavender gingham. Great memory. Thanks!😄
I really loved the video! Especially since my mom wore pinafores all the time growing up in the 50's, and now I'm sewing similar things in the Lolita style. It's amazing to see how fashion has evolved and I'd love to see more Gertie Dress History! ^-^
Gertie! Such joy from your sewing help, your historian side and your love of the designs and patterns of the clothing I grew up thinking was the very height of glorious fashion. I thought it would be so great when I would finally become an adult and thus be able to wear those Pat Perkins dresses, lol! Oh, and I once owned that very half-apron pattern -- memory lane.😀😸💖
I love your dress design.inspire to you.keep showing your design😍😍
I absolutely love your work! I've been binge watching all your videos and learning how to sew better! Thank you for adding alot of tips while going through the sewing projects! That helps me alot. I ve been wanting to make my own clothes for a long time but I don't like the patterns I find....until now! 💖💖💖

Wouldn’t it be awesome if Gertie and Christine McConnell did a collaboration together?!
Listen, Im also a wannabe dress historian and the dress pinafore is totally a dream garment for myself
Joan Crawford wore a matching one with her daughter.
Hi Gertie, You looked really cute in the pinafore dress with the long sleeve shirt understanding it. How old is that Sewing Machine? I have a 1957 Ambassador Sewing Machine a few old sewing books some misc patterns from 1956 and an old dress pattern 🙂
How awesome would it be if you were able to come up with a utility style jumpsuit like Rosie The Riveter????? I would jump on that in a heart beat.
Ooooo... Now I'm contemplating a mashup of the Presley Shirt with the Cobbler Capris as a boiler suit!
Oh Gertie I love Christine’s apron! I so badly want to make one! Any suggestions on a pattern just like it?
She released a pattern for it on her Patreon, I think it was last year!
@@GertiesWorld thanks Gertie. I’ve sent a message out to make sure the pattern is still available before I join. Thank so much for the Cobbler dress pattern. I’ve already made one so far. And will make another when spotlight get you fabric in!
