I think a lot of the talk about the suicide attempt is hyperbole. Adjani was going through a difficult time anyway and I'm sure this experience didn't help. But...she seemed totally unaffected during her subsequent interviews around the time & she's never referenced anything in all the years since, despite being something of an open book.. Plus, one would assume that slashed wrists would result in scarring, of which there is none. It's a 'cool' story, but i don't believe there is much to it.
@MidnightatMidian Narcissist? No evidence of that whatsoever. Yes, she's always had a hang up about her appearance, but there's nothing to indicate she's self-centred. Quite the contrary I'd argue.
It's like how anybody are so eager to paint Kubrick as a monster because of Shelley Duvall, when she always said that she would do this again and would not trait it for anything. How later Duvall struggled with her mental health,, so many today are quick to say it's because of Shining, or assume that because it was a difficult shooting it.
@@Man_Ray78 People love stories like this, but often they are completely exaggerated or even completely made up. An example would be Heath Ledger, who many fans believe could not have coped with his Joker role. But that is complete nonsense. Michael Jai White was in the movie too and he said that Ledger had no mental problems at all while shooting the movie. Also he died while shooting "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" - not while shooting "The Dark Knight Rises".
There was a time, prior to Jurassic Park, that all you had to do was say Sam Neill, and and my wallet came out. Everybody who knew him as Reilly was like that.
Only two minutes in and you get even the most basic facts wrong, including the pronounciation of Zulawski's name, and also completely skipping over the part where he fled to France to make "That Most Important Thing: Love", the success of which was the entire reason he was allowed back into Poland to make "On The Silver Globe". Also later on, calling Heinrich "creepy" when he is the most obvious comic relief character you could have in a film like this. Did you even put a little bit of effort into this? Frustratingly superficial.
I remember that creature from my youth !!! It wreaked havoc upon the part of the country I live in and still to this day years after the creature died it is still spoken of with fear and horror!!!
Very interesting and well-researched video, but there is one inaccuracy. 'Possession' was, in fact, released in UK cinemas and not just club cinemas. I know this because that's where I first saw it on its opening day (I am that old). It was banned on video during the 'video nasties' hysteria but as so much of the 'video nasty' issue was related to the idea that children could get hold of films on video whereas they couldn't get into the cinema, many of the films given further cuts or banned altogether on video were treated more leniently for their cinema releases where an X or, later, 18 certificate was seen as a complete restriction to people of that age and over. Sam Raimi's 'The Evil Dead', for example, never had any troubles on its cinema release but had a lot of trouble with police seizures on video (hard to believe today).
@@leopheard A long time earlier. Back in the early 80s. It pretty much ensured the success and mythologizing of each film that was on the list. I can't remember a lot about the case of the young murderers of Jamie Bulger but the film that was being blamed in the press was 'Child's Play 3'. I
Hold on... How did the Soviets censor his films after he left the USSR? Were they running France as well? Like that's even a French newspaper in the video😂
I saw this on Shudder a few years ago, simply based on the poster artwork. And yes I can confirm it was deeply disturbing. It was also really good and I highly recommend it if you're into Cronenberg fare
I agree: the actress was beautiful...it makes the subway scene even more disturbing. I found this film on streaming somewhere a few months ago. I believe it's a early cosmic horror film.
I have watched this couple times, but it's about a decade or more ago. I remember that she left an impact for me since she does such a good job in the movie. Sam Neil is also very good but she has the juicy part to play in terms of the character arc.. and she delivers. I have actually been semi recently talking over messages about the movie and about watching it again 😂 So I'm not that suprised this video was suggested to me..
There are two cuts of this film: US cut (117 minutes) Restored cut (2hrs 13 mins) Both can be readily located online and viewed for free (legally). I rented this film from the local library in 1987 just based on the box art. The female librarian gave me a little smirk, because she knew the content was for adult viewing. The librarian almost refused to rent the movie out to me , Until I had to explain to her how my dad raised me up on grindhouse exploitation flicks back since I was 2 years old(Father and son weekend bonding trips To the movies That lasted Until I was about 19 years old). So hard R rated flicks were nothing new to me. Exploitation flicks were the means by how I gained an appreciation of the female body. Although now that I think about it, those films conditioned certain female body types more appealing to me; Rubenesque to slim big breasted females. Lets say for instance the body type would range between a 1970's - mid 1980's Pam Grier or Sybil Danning into an early 1980's Linda Blair or Jayne Kennedy lol.
My mam actually accompanied me to my local video when I was 8 and told the shop owner that it was fine to rent me similar titles but not because she was into the movies I mainly watched them on my own !!! I have told people this snd they seem shocked like it could have been harmful to me but all it did was turn me into a film buff and memorabilia collector !!!!
No surprise: the film did NOT Ruin the actress' life. Click bait. Avoid.
Moving on before I watched...thank you.
@@fordwk It's actually a good, interesting, and informative video. The title is just bad.
Adjani watching the movie and immediately trying to cut her wrists is such an Anna move 😂
Isabelle Adjani was easily one of the most beautiful women on the planet in the 80s/90s. Just flawless.
shes flawless in nosferatu 79, just radiance. filmbrahs essay could use some more of thet.
Love her in The Tenant too, what an unsung masterpiece that film is also.
And like most dangerously beautiful women, a total headcase.

It's a 'cool' story, but i don't believe there is much to it.
Yes, it was all an act.
She was, and is way too narcissistic to harm her beauty.
It was just a call for attention.

Nice, comprehensive video on a powerful film; I'm glad for Adjani's sake that the video title turned out to be misleading
A fantastic horror film. Deserves a lot more love.
Seen thousands. This is one of the best horror films ever made.

Adjani has such a natural beauty to her
The creature known as Thatcher is more horrific than anything in this movie...............
😂
I remember that creature from my youth !!! It wreaked havoc upon the part of the country I live in and still to this day years after the creature died it is still spoken of with fear and horror!!!
Fact's
Ala Rik Mayhall. Take that Thatcher!!!😂😂😂
When London was London and not Londonistan you mean?

Was the 'video nasty' thing not just a result of the Jamie Bulger murder? Or was it a big hysteria thing before then?

He is a great director.

this movie is so difficult to watch. possibly the most disturbing movie i've seen.
"I can fix her" lol
Absurdly gorgeous. Rediculous.

2:19, Damien Thorn!
Why 2:19 specifically??
So glad I gave up acting. Kudos to Isabelle!! She is a stronger woman than I !

Crazy movie, a lot of surreal stuff happening a bit like something Lynch would have made but much rawer.
Can you believe Robert Pattinson wants to Remake this?

I hope you didn't say the sentence, "exploitation films were the means ny how I gained an appreciation of the female body" to the librarian.
Wow that devolved into creepy misogyny. I enjoyed the beginning tho.
