I love how at 35:04 right after Robotnik says "Damn it...! What a piece of junk" you hear "Don't criticize"
Wow, the timing of the Japanese voice actors make a MASSIVE difference on making the character's motions match up with what they said. In the English version, a lot of the speech is changed, and doesn't match up with the many gestures the characters make, so it looks like over-done animation with them lashing out their arms or hands for no reason. It's amazing how that changes the quality of the cut scene.
Not to mention, Eggman saying "Yosh!" at the end of every level actually makes sense here. Still, I love the English version so much. :3 That said, though, this still has a lot of the same problems as the
English one; dialogue running together, music drowning out said dialogue
(video games in general seem to have this one really bad), characters constantly interrupting each other (which is aggravating to listen to), etc.
+Popful Frost
I find in the JP one dialogue cutting eachother off are situations where people would do it to rush out a point. It's not random cutoffs for some reason. At least it's not characters cutting THEMSELVES off which happens more than a few times in English (Such as in the final battle. "I'll use yo--" "CHAOS CONTROL!")
34:44 TERIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!
Chikao Otsuka was at his absolute best here as Eggman 😭 i cant get enough of his delivery... so energetic and full of character... I miss the guy :(
Also I just love how cryptic his reaction was when Shadow showed him the Eclipse Cannon. Its... hard to know if he's in awe or disturbed. Up until the end, you dont really know how he REALLY feels about Gerald and its just masterful. Its almost like he suppresses these feelings. What an amazing and nuanced character writing.
It's not until watching the Japanese ver that I get why Shadow acts the way he does, like not reacting to Amy's hug. In English, he seems more volatile, a tad more emotional due to his voice acting. But in actuality, he doesn't react to things with much emotion; even his recaps are matter-of-fact with little personality in them. The cutscenes do suggest his (severe) stoicism may be a quirk of his reprogramming as his memories with Maria have more emotion in them. Not a lot, but enough to tell his natural nature is less stoicism and more reserved. So his voice in Japanese makes sense (and is so nice on the ears lol).
What a world of difference voice acting direction can make.
Rip the voice actor for Doctor Eggman his hardwork is appreciated by all of his fans across the globe.
This is why I play the game in japanese, Because it actually fits the dialogue alot better, and it actually has feels.
Looking up some Japanese, pay attention to the pronouns the characters say for "I."
Shadow: "Boku wa..."
Rouge: "Atashi..."
Eggman: "Washi wa..."
Each pronoun has a different meaning and corresponds to the character. "Atashi." by Rouge is a pronoun used by tomboyish girls. Being casual, it also good for the showing of confidence of feminity. "I, a tough young person", it means. "Ore" is its counterpart. Like Rouge, 'cause she's awesome, has high self-esteem, and a clever gal that knows how to get what she wants. She's not the formal person, hence why it's a cut version of the formal "Watashi". Her manners are iffy.
In shows, you'll see girls that use "Atashi" foil themselves to shy, shrinking violent characters that use "Watashi". They are confident and self-sufficient heroes of their stories, more vocal than the quiet bunch. Even though Rouge isn't really a hero...
Unlike "Ore", this pronoun doesn't have the trouble of being rude in formal contexts, nor does it have the delinquent tone. "Atai" does. Actually, the reason why the "ore" discussion is so long in the Heroes story is that the history changed over time, whereas "Atashi" kept its original meaning.
Shadow said "Boku." Its the standard pronoun for men in Japan. And the thing is it's used to not sound aggressive by men. (Not *aggressive*? He wanted to nuke the planet.) It's also a nod to shonen heroes in the 60s using "boku." and the pronouns for young boys. Really contradicts with Shadow...but in hindsight, it makes sense.
He is a polite character. He's the only one that addresses Eggman as "Doctor" and not as the nickname most character say. If you listen to Shadow in other games like the Japanese dub, like 06, rarely does he raise his voice. He is soft-spoken, only shouting when he's using Chaos Powers or loses control of his temper. Compare this to Sonic, whose manners are all over the place, and can really rude to Eggman and his enemies at points. (Calling names, being snarky, sarcastic.) In other media, Sonic is seen putting his feet on tables and lacking any table manners, with other characters calling him out.
Shadow doesn't fall into Sonic's lack of etiquette, serving as a foil. Even when you see him *sit* in Sonic X he doesn't flaunt himself like Rouge, or take up the entire couch like Sonic (what the heck dude). He just puts his hands in his lap and crosses his legs, at most.
So, Shadow using "Boku" was an interesting and logical choice.
And Eggman is just a popular culture usage for elderly people. Even though he is middle-aged, but hey, he wants to sound sophisicated and thinks he's wiser and better than everyone.
All thanks to the power of the internet! :D
If anything, Shadow should instead, use "ore".
I think Shadow's creators wanted to acknowledge the fact he existed 50 years prior to SA2, as "Boku" was more commonplace with males back then.
"Boku", as I searched up, is also meant to sound humble??? Shadow is capable of ego at times, so it may be element of irony. Perhaps Shadow's creators wanted him to contrast with Sonic's energetic, cocky persona with a more archaic, dark nature. Several other characters also use "boku" and "ore" in alignment to their behavior. (I.e, Tails and Silver) Maybe SEGA just utilized "boku" for the sake of Shadow's character individuality.
But that's what I figure. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Us fans shall never know unless with direct confirmation.
Remember Shadow's role in this game; trying to double cross both the heroes and Eggman at the same time. Look closely at how he interacts with the other characters; Vs. Sonic, running from the police, finding out Rouge, he only gets cocky and aggressive when he's acting on his own, outside of Eggman's sight. His near-subservient attitude is intentional, so that he may initiate Gerald's plan while fooling Eggman into gathering the emeralds for him. His speech patterns and behavior are an extension of his trickery.
Shadow's voice in the Japanese version actually has subtlety while his English voice is pretty much cocky and edgy all the time. Never really thought of him as humble before hearing his voice here. I'm impressed.
5:49 Now his mouth movements when he says "ARK?!" makes much more sense.
who only came here for the TERIAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
me
Same here.
34:43, Pure Junichi Kanemaru Gold. Also glad to see you again, I thought you might've disappeared!
Always felt bad for the Flying Dog pilot at 23:10. I mean first he got his ass beaten to a pulp by a fucking cartoon bat, only to die along with the rest of the GUN soldiers less than ten minutes later when Prison Island explodes.
Shadows Japanese voice actor and David Humphrey are legends
There's a lot of moments where scenes flow a lot more naturally in the original. Just a simple rewording of a few scenes can really change them.
I love SA2's cutscenes. The motion capture and the facial expressions are just great, the characters are so alive. And these cutscenes prove Sonic characters work better with center mouths when they're not grinning or making other extreme facial expressions. The Japanese voices go perfectly with the motion capture (Amy and Tails' voices are kind of meh though).
And Rouge is just amazing in the original. She's such a flirt, and incredibly laid back about everything. Her body language is just perfect with her voice.
Now if only the English Translation could keep that atmosphere as well. A lot of the motions don't feel like they sync up to the lines at all. At the very least they could have tried to match mouth flaps, but unfortunately that did not happen.
Ruby of Blue me 2
Ruby of Blue I heard in the English version, characters will often talk over each other.
in english:
Sonic: teriaaaaa!
in jp:
Sonic: teriaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
lol
28:04 IVE COME TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT
*insert obvious snapcube reference*
I keep forgetting how loud the music is...
HERE IT IS, FINALLY, WOOOT
51:59 I love that attack.
29:01 F**K YOU MOON! YOU NEVER HAVE THE CHEESE I WANTED!
30:36 WHAT THE FUCK!? Why wasn't this put in English ver.? You clearly understand what Eggman just stopped on the part where the article mentions him and his embarrassing defeat. FUCKIN' HELL! What were translators doing? Why couldn't they adapt translation of the game much better?
They really need to remake this game with updated graphic this game was the best
I love how aggressive Sonic sounds/is when him and Shadow have that final race.
Yay blur, you're back!
Keep rocking, dude. Waiting for the final story :)
Funny how a simple instance of liplock can make cutscenes better.
Sega just couldn't be bothered to lip sync.
No- it’s because this game was rushed with the Dreamcast on the verge of death. If they had the time, they probably would have given proper lip synching for the non Japanese dubs.
Can I just state for the record that Japanese Rouge sounds absolutely adorable? (alliteration FTW)
Plus, Japanese Rouge doesn't sound like she's reading off a script!
^-^
One of the many reasons why I love Rumi Ochiai _so_ damn much. I personally consider her highly underrated.
Shadow's japanese voice actor is definitely his best voice actor in any language. Sega should replace Shadow's current english voice actor with one who sounds like shadow's japanese voice!
+CarozQH Shadow's seiyuu is Koji Yusa. He also voiced Gin Ichimaru from Bleach.
+CarozQH Shadow's original voice actor was David Humphrey for this game back than I think Sega was trying to get the characters voice to sound like their Japanese counterpart and I think 4kids continue that tradition to some extend it's just nowadays Sega decides to make them sound more American which result in a lot of the current voices sound so bad.
+Retro Gamer
It's more of the direction than the voices themselves. Like Shadow's current voice actor... he voices Jin from Samurai Champloo and Kisame from Naruto. The voice directors have him using his gruff and raspy sounding Kisame voice when he should be using his calmer yet serious Jin voice.
I thought exactly like that about Sonics voice. In the english version Sonic sounds childish and arrogant, but in the japanese version he sounds funny and emotional.
10:36 sayonara, Shadow the hedgehog.
Good your back!
my favorite cutcene is the first one in iron gate I love the way the announcer is talking
Nice mate
41:37 Rouge takes sick pleasure in teasing Knuckles, doesn't she?
Notice how they used real explosions
I find it really interesting that both games use the same music.
28:58
Aaaaaand cue the fandub comments.
32:41 *this place looks like pumpkin hill toot doot*
You came for 34:44 didn't you?
Does anyone remember that Japanese dubbed episode of Sonic X when Sonic said "I can't believe it!" in English? Good times.
Nope, but I remember
"O WAT A GREAT VUUUE!!!"
SOMEBODY HELP!!!
41:22 knuckles saves rouge.
The most serious eggman we ever saw
This is my anime :3
34:43 - 34:52
Sonic: *"TER-YAAAAAH!"*
In English, cool if a little silly.
In Japanese, *AWESOME!!!*
I would have never expected Shadow to use boku!! I mean, even Sonic uses ore, why not Shadow too...?
リリンきゅん cause shadow is a bit more refined in his personality, and a lot more prestigious in his mannerisms.
Also it shows him to be more of a foil to Sonic
I can barely hear them over the extremely loud music, is the audio mixing really this terrible?
Either way I'd say it's better than the English dub though.
Much clearer in Japanese, these subs are even better than the English ones, haha.
Are you gonna do the ones for the final story of this game?
+Ghoul Dash Hi. I'll post it soon. Keep posted.
blackblur7 Okay.
26:18 There goes Hawaii
I was about to correct them it's Robotnik then I was like but wait it was always Eggman in Japan so no correcting them on his name :(
55:46 Hero Side Story! In Japanese
What’s the song at 2:35
The Japanese dialogue makes more sense
Reporter: ...while fleeing the scene...
Eggman: *reacting to what was just said* But... But that’s Shadow!
Japanese Eggman can read r minds!
"Couch Control" lol
28:00 I’ve come to make an announcement
When you will ever learn?
How many times does Eggman say "Dammit!" in this game?
Whaddya mean? He says ''Kuso'' all the time?
+Анатолий «MolderFeeD» Урбанов If you have the subtitles on, you'll see Baldy McNosehair say "Damn it!" several times
Kevin Broderick *chuckles* I see
51:43
The first they used robotnik in the japanese versión
34:42
*YOU'RE FUCKING WELCOME*
Cue the Gratuitous Spanish...
I have sonic adventure but not the 2nd one
Japanese Eggman has a wicked evil laugh.
I considero shadow as the modern era replacement of metal Sonic, since he is Also the opposite of Sonic in all ways, and consider himself superior to sonic
And this still doesn’t fix any of the problems I have with the story.
least the fandub exists
10:16 María Robotnik it’s Professor Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter, Doctor🥼👨⚕️Ivo Eggman Robotnik’s cousin and Shadow the hedgehog’s best friend later girlfriend.
Alright dude this is getting complex I think we're going to move on to our next guest
I really wish they used the original English script rather than translating the Japanese version of the original script. What they translated and added into Japanese made sense for that language. When they translated the Japanese translation into English, they left a lot of that stuff on there that left it sounding awkward at points.
PlasmaPower sometimes they change it because in American English, we don’t talk the way it would sound directly translated. Our day to day conversations are significantly less sophisticated, and we use about 70% of our given vocabulary, so if they allowed the direct translation, it would sound weird.
Case and point, watch The Funimation dub of DBZ from the 2000s and then watch DBZKai. Kai was directly translated and it sounds very very strange.
Personally, I feel like Rouge and Amy's voices are the only ones who's Japanese voices sound better than their English voices I don't like any of the other character's voices though, especially knuckles and eggman's voices.
OMGGG SONIC ADVENTURE 2 B*TCH SONIC ADVENTURE 2!!!!!!!!!!
