"My imperfect self" makes loads of more sense than "My loathsome copy." Metal Sonic was created to _surpass_ Sonic's speed, to be better than him in every way... a perfect Sonic, if you will.
there have already been MULTIPLE videos debunking this
Does "roboticizing" even exist within the games' canon the same way it does in the SatAM/Archie canon? So far as I can recall, the games' Eggman never outright transformed living creatures into a mechanical version, rather he always just put small animals into larger robot bodies in order to power them.
I've heard MANY lines in the Sonic franchise that I immediately thought "This is so nonsensical that it must have been due to incompetent translation" after hearing them.
Kirbysmith64 Not at all.
Yes. All he did was harvest electricity directly from the animal's nervous system, providing near infinite power so long as the animal was kept fed, hydrated and healthy. Granted being trapped in a cramped metal shell is not healthy but still.
He would only have to replace the power source whenever the animal died. Even then, later games like Heroes, Shadow and New Sonic show that he must have switched to GUN's Chaos Drives created by his grandfather as they proved more efficient, which is why Omega does not have an animal whereas Gamma and the rest of the early E series did.
Bottom line: You CANNOT turn an organic living thing into a robot AT ALL. The best you can do is either turn them into a cyborg and then enslave the cyborg, or copy their brain into a computer and install that into a robot instead, otherwise as an android or a Marathon/Halo style smart AI. You can't convert their flesh to metal and plastic directly without the use of nanites and even then if you used nanites, the host would likely die anyway and their brain "construct" would be lost.
It's frustrating that right after this game, they decided to make Metal Sonic mute and seemingly without any will of his own. I would have loved for THIS Metal Sonic to keep appearing in the games.
That was the point though Eggman took away his will to do anything like this ever again
Metal is the only AI I can asure has mental (?) problems.
Metal Sonic can't speak in base form, he speaks in Neo form or higher
Also read the IDW comics the first arc is Metal being a badass
@@Eman02kG
Not prefectly, because of Sonic Rivals 2. So, indeed, Metal's self awareness is being deliveratelly ignored for the games stories.
Sometimes I fell like I was the only one who played that crap.
He has got more of a personality in recent years. I don’t think he needs a voice sonic mania, CD, an the comics show he can do find without it.
Metal's VA (Sonic) RARELY plays villains.
That's kind of interesting
He did a decent job playing metal sonic tho
He's mostly known for mentors, serious figures or fun characters, Metal is not what I usually expect from Kanemaru.
I like that voice for Neo Metal Sonic, sounds like a classy killing machine
I don’t know. I think Neo Metal Sonic sounds more menacing in the English version.
Jun'ichi Kanemaru also voiced Metal Sonic, not just Sonic.
Good to see the dialogue is almost equally as cheesy in the Japanese version.
Though some of the phrasing is better than in the English version.
Also, does anyone think that Sonic sounds oddly British for the last line, "So... we are Sonic Heroes!"?
Even in the Japanese version, the transformation scene still take a long time. I could order a pizza with a side of wings, call my grandparents, do a load of laundry, dry, and fold them, and he'd still be transforming.
XD
U talkin Dragonball Z dude? (SSJ3 Goku!)
***** Point still stands, though. And with me being Mexican, I'd have a long conversation with my grandparents on the phone.
Yeah, it's so epic, I always fangirl at this part.
One wonders why transformations and calling your attacks are never interrupted in Japanese media. I'd like it if a Japanese writer subverted that tradition sometime in either a game, a manga or an anime: the baddy tries to evolve into a perfect, ultra or jogress form, but the hero blasts them with a BFG 9000 while they are in the middle of transforming and they end up like Dr Brundle in The Fly.
Or they yell their attack name as they start it but get cut short and fail the attack because the hero gets them first while they are off guard.
When the bad guy tries to do the same to them, they find that they can't and the trope plays straight only for the hero, explained by the hero using Chaos Control or something similar to stop or slow down time for everything but him, so he can take as long as he wants to show off his attacks while the baddy eats shit.
When he stops using his time stop such as when he gets really angered and decides not to play around, his attacks and transformations are instantaneous, so the bad guy can't hope to interrupt them.
It sounds like they kept Ryan Drummond's Metal Sonic roar anyway.
It made me think that it was recorded in English first given the fact they kept Ryan's roars from the English voice recordings in the Japanese version.
I think in english metal sats NOOOOO!
Metal's voice is sweet.
They missed a great chance to bring back Super Tails and Super Knuckles.
There's a lot of debate as to whether or not Tails and Knuckles did go Super here (retconning Tails's need for Super Emeralds and re-envisioning their glow from the 2D games to an aura here), or if they were just all being supported by Sonic alone. This may just be me here, but I think the Japanese dialogue makes it a lot less ambiguous and suggests that, yes, all three of them do go super (in particular, Shadow uses "omae-tachi", a collective second-person term, when talking about buying time for them).
DarkSonic180 It's been a few years. Maybe he's old enough to not need them.
Viúvo da SEGA Most definitely. Super Knuckles at least needs a revamping.
YamatoFukkatsu Clearly they haven't gone super themselves. They seem to have little to no control of their flight, more like they were being lugged around.
@@YamatoFukkatsuA little late but yeah I see your point. However I think the Super forms should be exclusive to some characters cause it may cheapen the Emeralds and Chaos Energy itself if everyone could use them.
Welp....even in Japanese, this in particular still seems cheesy:
"Why can't I defeat you?"
"It's because we're Sonic Heroes!"
.......okay......?
It becomes a bit (but not much) less cheesy when you realize that Sonic was most likely mocking Metal for his message (thought to be sent by Eggman) at the start of the game in which he himself mockingly called them "Sonic Heroes".
Red Black Ah...that actually makes a lot of sense. ...the English bit at the end is still weird.
@@redblack8766 oh wow never thought of it that way
BRUH
Poor Metal, he ruined the dramatic speech
69 likes, make a wish!
Can't get over Big's attack line :,D
Maybe it's just me, but notice how it's pretty hard to actually hear Metal Overlords spoken lines? It could be bad audio mixing yea, but since all the other characters are clearly understandable, I think more of it as him "acending" with his transformation cause of all the copied data.
So he is on a slightly higher plane of existence than everybody else. Bcs after the boss fight, when he transforms back, you can understand him clearly again.
I don't think that was there intention but I think it's cool.
But it was probs bad audio mixing lol
I love so much this game! i think it's my favorite one and i'm a huge fan of the franchise!Thank you for adding this,i love the original voices and dialogues.
Awesome thanks.
Thank you for making these videos, it must be a lot of work to Sub everything

Even Team Chaotix terrible songs can make Metal Sonic/Madness' weak spot get insanely damaged
7:58 Metal Sonic : Hisashiburidana Sonic! Orenowana bushin!
“It’s been a long tome. My trap!”
Lol😆
this is why Sonic Heroes is a fav.

Sonic turned British for a moment
nice one like the video
That was awesome,💙💛❤️🤩👍👍👍
I was searching for this. I want metal sonic with brain back.
6:06 interesting how you can hear the voices a bit more clearly compared to the English version.
why did Sonic suddenly became Australian at the end?
Grew up listening to Drummond's Metal VA but oh my god this is so raw
Cream and Charmy sound really cute in Japanese.
Sayaka and Yoko made them sound so cute
Such a adorable bunny and bee
@@cindycepeda-tc5bq Indeed. 😊
What about when Metal Sonic performs Chaos Control?
I CAN DIG IT
SUCKAAAAAAAA!
Awesome! Do next Sonic Adventure please!
I hope that Sonic Adventure gets translated too. I just watched the Egg Hornet cutscene in the Japanese version and a lot of the lines sound completely different there. Sonic says "Dr. Eggman" instead of "No way Tails!" for one example.
I'd love that so much!
Not to toot my own horn here but since posting that comment I got an english subbed run of the original JP SA1 up if you want to see it.
Really appreciate these videos. Planning on doing any more?
You're welcome.
Who knows…?
blackblur7 are you still alive?
your channel has been dead for 5 months now you know.
3:42 Eggman: Curse you, Metal Sonic...!
6:22 Sonic could not dig vector at all 😂😂
I remember this...
Supa powa!
8:01-Maybe "My loathsome/repugnant doppelganger" sounds a bit more dramatic? Since Metal wants to surpass Sonic too much and...that's what I got.
「忌まわしき分身」 ("Imawashiki bunshin"), which directly translates to "abominable offshoot/other self."
"My loathsome/repugnant doppelgänger" can work; even recycling "My loathsome copy" can work. However, I find that those words don't really quite match strongly with the overall context of Sonic and Metal Sonic's conversation.
Indeed, Metal Sonic really went overboard here to achieve his goal to surpass and destroy his template once and for all. However, with that, he also seeks to prove that, created as a robot, he is the true, perhaps "perfected" Sonic, even if it requires "degrading" into this horrifying mechanical monster.
Hence, I went with "My imperfect self."
"My imperfect self" makes much more sense
3:49 is weird that Sonic don't recognize metal sonic
Did Charmy call Metal a Hentai?
Sonotori datto.
Hentai means pervert
@@superfighter064 Hentai can mean "transformation" as well
@@skullplasma0221 pretty sure that’s “Henshin”

Japan Amy:Sonikku!
Usa Amy:Sonic!
Like the Japanese versions better than the English versions.
Damn right. The original Sonic X is why I started watching Japanese television subbed now, with Hellsing being the only one I'll also watch dubbed, because the Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate dubs are not shit like 99% of all other english dubs are. Shadow the Hedgehog is also good in english too, compared to other games in the series. Hammy at times, yes. But not bad.
I even started learned Japanese because of the original voice acting in those games Digimon, and I made a Japanese friend from my studies too. I only understand kana and I'm currently revising what I've learned so far, so I still need subs for the time being.
I prefer the japanese voice acting over the english voice acting of this game too. Despite this game's weak writing & plot (in my opinion), the japanese voice acting was more tolerable.
@@lionocyborg6030 I prefer subs over dubs mainly because the lip syncing looks off in dubs.
Great. Now, what are you gonna do next? (I mean, what do you WANT to do.)
We shall see…

ARE YOU STILL ALIVE
How does Vector's dialogue go for the super phase?
I don't think I've ever seen the line since I know how to fly quickly through the final boss, haha.
However, from playing off and listening to the exact audio file from the disc with the clip, the lines go like this:
In Japanese:「奴の投げてくる戦艦は、力まかせに砕くしかないぜ。
ナックルズ! 腕力は自慢なんだろう! ぶつからなしやれ!」
Romanized (Romaji):
("Yatsu no nagetekuru senkan wa, chikara makase ni kudaku shikanai ze.
Knuckles! Wanryoku wa jiman nandarou! Butsukaranashi yare!")
A direct translation in English (without Vector's mannerisms):
"Those battleships he's throwing at you need lots of power to smash.
Knuckles! Show off your power! Destroy those battleships!"
How I might translate the line in English (with Vector's mannerisms):
"Those battleships he's throwin' call for some serious smashin'.
Knuckles! Time to show 'im what'cha got! Smash 'em to pieces!"
You're welcome.
blackblur7 Thank you very kindly!
I wonder if this guys alive or not?
Sonic's last line in this is surprisingly better in English. Yeah, it's still cheesy, but Drummond put in more effort into it.
MORE VIDS
This made me realise that Japanese voice actors actually aren't unanimously better than the Western ones.
I've never heard of voice acting schools in the West though...
i would take the japanese dub over the english one in ANY sonic game
jeff blacklight That's called being a total weaboo, there are a lot of games and anime that sound way better in other languages like English compared to their JP/original versions.

12:52
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT
If shadow knew about The super Form why He didnt use It too?
Mega Sonic Because they are Sonic Heroes. Shadow doesn't qualify.
Mega Sonic the shadow in this sonic heroes is a fake, he's a robot, according to sega. the real shadow is in the shadow the hedgehog game, that's why the team dark ending shows that rouge and omega are in a room full of replicas of shadow, showing that the shadow they've been working with in sonic heroes is a fake
He is the real one, the androids use missiles as Chaos Spear, but Shadow actually uses a real Chaos Spear and he can perform a Chaos Blast.
Also, if you spend 9 minutes in the final boss in Shadow the Hedgehog, Eggman will tell Shadow he is the real one
The shadow in Sonic Heroes is the real shadow and after the events of Sonic Heroes, Shadow the hedgehog game.
This Is Not CC
Yep
I liked Tails' Voice a lot here... Perhaps a bit of Rouge's Voice as well... But further look, I don't know.. a bit off.. I don't know, I think English version is superior in most aspects.
