Hi guys, I'm back with a new Steely Dan cover! My Old School is one of my favorite Steely Dan song from Countdown to Ecstasy (1975). Check out my other Steely Dan cover (Bodhisattva) here: • Bodhisattva - Steely Dan
Both covers were recorded live in my studio.
Here's the gear I used: Fender Stratocaster American Special into a Carl Martin Plexitone into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III. Shure Sm57 and Neumann u47 Fet into a Focusrite ISA Two Preamp. Apogee Duet 2 converters. The video was filmed using a Panasonic Lumix G7.
Let me know in the comments what you think and don't forget to subscribe to my channel to see more videos coming up in the next weeks!

This was my introduction to your playing. You absolutely own this number. I hear people "note for note" Steely Dan riffs all the time. BUT... it always sounds like they're hanging on for dear life. Barely achieving the correct note, while almost never achieving soul, feel, groove or dynamics. You freaking own every note you played. As if you wrote it and bend it to your will. I'm 60. Played for 56 of those years. I don't often totally own the songs I perform, but I recognize when someone else does. 👏
I agree guppybill he owns this one!
This is the absolute best " non-tutorial" lesson I've ever worked. No BS, no blah blah, just straight up great playing and an excellently accurate tab to go along with it. Reminds me of the old days when we had to lift the needle and listen over and over till we got it...only in a modern technology way of watching you. I would love you to do more SD biggie's like this. Josie, Reeling in the Years, Kid Charlemagne, Don't Take Me Alive...etc. Please....and Thank You!
Thank you Daisy! I really appreciate your words, I have on my channel a cover of Bodhisattva and the solo from Kid Charlemagne but yes.. definitely new ones are coming! All the best, cheers!
Bro this is incredible
Freakin EXCELLENT!!
My favorite Steely Dan song. By far the best performance I've ever heard, including the original.
Hey Rick! You're too kind! Thank you!
@@rickj6048 It was very good but not even close being on par with Skunk's. I think you're drunk.
@@KidNoah2012 Not saying Skunk Baxter wasn't great back then. I listened to some of his more recent playing on YT and it 's hard to listen to. Like he's trying too hard. Not pleasant whether drunk or sober.
Awesome work Nic !! The Skunk would be proud !!
Hey Joseph what's up? Thank you!
I love your version. Our chuch band is covering this song in our charity concert and I admit I'm pretty much stealing your version as close to note-by-note as i can get it in the amount I've had to work on it. You're awesome at this.
Glad to hear that! All the best
Mmmm, lovely.
Always thought it was pull offs instead of vibrato @2:38 but you're workin it hard bruh keep these comin
For sure!!
Well done sir!!!!.... I think Skunk would be proud of your rendition....
Thank you very much!!:)
Excellent. Love that song. Smooth as silk, my man.
Thank you for your nice comment :)
I've always thought the genius of this song was the way guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter traded jabs with Jimmie Haskell's brilliant horn arrangement, and your performance captures that instrumental duel perfectly. The tonedr loves it … that's all you need to know.
Wow! Thank you for that!
Are you kidding me? Such great energy and vibe. Wow.
Figuring it all out is already unbelievable, then playing it without making one mistake… Amazing!
Thank you so much!!
Killed. IT!
The best part of this is how much you seem to be enjoying yourself! This is by far my favorite steely dan track as far as guitar work goes and I'm glad you seem to be having a blast :)
those slides at 2:38 are great. .. you expect two maybe three but he does like five. and you stopped them precisely!
Homeboy is knockin it OUT
Now THAT'S the way to play with energy.....Fantastic job!
super nice playing - love this!
Best cover I’ve ever seen of this song

Great job ! Besides EVH, you might be the only other person that looks ecstatic playing guitar 🎸 !
dude your vibe just made me watch the whole thing
Thank you, Nicola, for helping me learn this tune faster than I would have doing entirely by ear. So great to see someone clearly loving and having fun with the greatness of Steely Dan :)
Awesome stuff!!!!
So good! Great work, man.

Perfect. Love it . Great tone and playing.
Great playing!!
Remarkable performance, great Nik !!!
Holy shit that was awesome.
Wow!!
Respect. Very much enjoyed this.
Dude, you rock. I play, and get into it... but I'm SO jealous of the FUN you're having. Simply awesome performance of one of my all time favorites! You sort of remind me of Andy Timmons as far as your freedom and enjoyment. Hats off...
Well I'm so proud for your comment... Thank you very much, Andy is my favourite guitar player of all time!
You nailed it mate. Superb, skillful guitar playing.

YAY!
Great lesson. Thanks
You're welcome!
@@NicolaPastori can you make the tab available again?
Killer! Sounds amazing.
very nice
hi there! thanks ;)
Excellent playing. I rarely comment on UA-cam but I needed to put my word out!
Wow, thank you!
Perfect execution, great job and thanks especially for the tab! Beyond what you're doing, on the very last part of the fadeout there are some descending chromatic licks that sound similar to Jimmy Page's soloing on The Firm's "Radioactive", Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" & similar things I've heard Joe Walsh play. Whatever those chromatic runs are called (?) they stump me every time I get to the end of the song.
Thank you very much Sean!
How did you get the tab?
Wow
nice job
Thank you man!
Very tasty my man, well done.
Thank you Douglas!
This guitar work is so inspiring!!!! Just wonderful! Effortless joy! Not sure how the tab might be available, can anyone help in that respect? Peace Everybody!!!
This is pretty fuckin outstanding
Thanks Alfonso!! :)
this is great. it sound correct. the tabs also great. have you seen the guitar cover of this from
playguitarsolos u tube channel? that is also great but he plays some parts differently & or in different positions. which one do you think is more like the original studio version? grazie
Hi Mark! Thanks for the kind words. I haven't checked that video in particular but I've seen different covers and yes, some licks may be played in a different position with good results. I can't tell what the original position was because I played the song by ear entirely and the way I played every lick was simply the most natural to me. May be not the "original" one though... Have a nice day!
It's the new Skunk.... start growing that moe bro..... thanks for the tab btw...
Yeahhh!!
Excellent hot Damn skunk in 1974 your great
YAY!! Thank you!
Do you have tabs somewhere???? This is amazing man
Hey Jim what's up? Check out the description box: there's a link to the tab and backing track. Have a nice day! Nicola
You rock! Man I aspire to be as good as u someday!!!!!
Cameron McCoy thank you man!
Badass. Jeff Baxter and Denny Diaz could play. Well done.
Well played. You’ve got good dynamics and a proper heavy hand for this tune. The only thing you’re sort of missing are some of those awesome false harmonics that make the strings just cry and wail.
Thank you very much! You mean the harmonics in the second solo?
Nicola Pastori Yea in the second solo and also in the outro. Also, and not to take take away from the awesomeness of his solo, a good part of the charm is his dirty fuzzy compressed sound like his tubes are about to explode. He used an analog orange squeezer and cranked up the gain, distortion, etc. he also set his guitars up for endless sustain. The dude in the following link tries to recreate the sound and only moderately succeeds (and his guitar has no sustain). www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/line-6-helix-hx-stomp-dialing-in-a-skunk-baxter-steely-danish-style-tone-my-old-school.2003144/
Nicely done, the timing seems hard, must've taken some time, thank you for sharing.
Thank you Joe!
good one -so cal
thanks!
Surprised this became a really big hit.
Can hardly hear Ozzy at all !!! 😶
Fifty years ago!
I was there.
Now do *In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida* mmmK?
KICKASS!
Thank you!! :)
sucks that this video only has 2.4 thousand views in this generation but stupid rap songs have millions of views. i’m a fourteen year old with dan fever and ive seen them twice. such a shame that the music taste has died. great work!
Speckles4YT Not really, it's just that there are tons of guitar covers out there.
SKUNK BAXTER
surfing mantis ....right, the guy can play!
you too
Never hit "subscribe" faster
Cancel that... I think I got it. Thanks.
Wonderful , really was, but it would be better with less record and 30 to 40 % more of you in the house speaker mix. But Thanks again.
Martha.
nice. fast. lose ... gunslingery...like you just kinda tossed it off instead of working for months . :) multo benne- that is just how skunk played.. not too tight .
