My Old School 8 Final

- This is a sound alike of the Steely Dan song "My Old School". Performed in Berklee's LA Studio Ensemble 2016 Spring semester led by Marty Walsh. Charts by hornbandcharts.com. Vocal chart by Seth Campbell. Guitar solo transcribed by Matt Ernst. Produced by Marty Walsh, Engineered by Mark Wessel's "Advanced Ensemble Recording Techniques class, console engineer Bradley Robertson. Mixed by Kenny Lewis at Mixed Emotions studio, Middleton MA.
That drummer is nailing those ghost notes and the lead guitar is killing it.
The vocal melodies in this song are just unreal. This song has more hooks than a tackle box.
My favorite Steely Dan song.
Reno so glad you appreciated the talent here. I agree completely! Marty
I'm going to add to my original comment. There are many versions on UA-cam of this song being covered. The musicianship is superior in this version by far, but those vocalists, especially the females, are so in tune and balanced that they send this version to another level.
what a great way of describing this beautiful song!
@@renorailfanning5465 The lead has a great voice but doesn't really do it style-wise for me. Too slick. Almost sleazy.
I’ve been a Steely Dan for 50 yrs . And I’m very protective of their “ Sound “ ... but GUYS !!! .... this is fantastic ! .. simply brilliant ! Well done .. I’m a new fan of yours
Mark thanks so much for the comment! It means a lot, glad you enjoyed it, Marty Walsh
Protective? lol
👍
Listen to Leonid and friends. Excellent video 100% accurate. This isn't and the video is not that good. This is good like a B+. Leonid and friends A+ and they are all Russians.
Great job! 😁🙌🏽
As a Steely Dan nut who has seen the band numerous times over past 20 years and has committed their albums to memory.. Wow. These kids absolutely nailed it. Amazing. Don and Walter would approve.
I think I’ve watched this more than 10 times since finding it two days ago. What a masterpiece.
I completely agree! Thanks for the kind words. Keep an eye out for the 2019 Spring Berklee LA Studio Ensemble's version of the Steely Dan song "Night By Night" coming soon!
Ha beat ya @Jeremy Zenkar, I've listened to this 12 times! haha!
Absolutely brilliant cover, I get emotional every time I watch it...
Same
Same here
I am everlastingly appreciative of these musicians🔥
I’m a huge Steely fan and this is a great rendition of a great song💥🔥❤️👏🏽👏🏽
thanks so much for the comment they mean a lot to all involved Marty
Huge Steely Dan fan since 75. Old folks like me grew up with this great 🎶 music and we worry about some of this crap that they call music today...NOT ANYMORE! I closed my eyes and swore Becker and Fagan were right here! Thank God..great music lives!SO TALENTED ALL OF YOU!BRAVO 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Wow that’s pretentious 😂
@@slaggo1 Oh NO! slaggo strikes again. Be afraid, very afraid...The sole arbiter of the Steely Dan catalogue. Be careful if you value your opinion!
2 years after discovery….I listen to this more than I do the original. GREAT STUDENTS !!!!! GREAT PROFESSOR!!!!
Me too.
The students at the Berklee School of Music are so talented and deserve lots of recognition.
Anyone who covers Steely Dan are winners in my book ,
This cover is right up there … absolutely love it 🙏
Yorkie thanks so much for the comment, every once means a lot to me and the band! Marty
@@martywalsh5348 You’re welcome , A very talented group of people , keep doing what you do ,

Wonderful cover.....I was suddenly in tears as I listened......My favorite Steely Dan piece, just nailed by these kids......outstanding doesn't do it justice
Gary thanks so much for the comment, it really does mean a lot. Marty Walsh
@@martywalsh3684 What a thrill to hear from you.....Fact is, I was not much of a Steely fan in the 70's.....Thought they and their fans were just too cool for school.......I just didn't get it at the time.....But this song has a musicality to it that's just irresistible.....so unique and original......the pace, the harmony, the brass, the voices...the blend...........6 minutes of great entertainment
ALL great! Guitar player NAILED the tone and inflection. Impressive! Drummer's GREAT. Hell, they all are!
Close, but not quite. He overdid it on the pinch harmonics during the second solo, to the point where it took a little life out of that segment.
I like the way the kid in the School of Rock video below attacked all the lead parts with a bit more vigor, just like "Skunk" Baxter did in the original.
Keep in mind, these are high school kids playing this version, so they're probably like 16 years old....
ua-cam.com/video/UjVj73_eBHw/v-deo.html
@@FrankieBag0donuts yeah that kid is great but he messed up the second solo by normal indistinct harmonics- then adding some trills which aren’t there and then of course he did some nice improvisation at the end.
We didn’t hear that from this fellow on the video with the older kids.
I’m sure he could’ve blown us away No doubt. but he was playing the original version perfectly with great feeling.🍮🍪☕️
by the way we are arguing about the length of hairs on a flea 🙂
I didn't envy the guitarist in this. He had to compete with what may be my favorite guitar solo of all time. He did a DAMN FINE JOB.
he worked hard on this, and nailed it!
I thought the exact same thing. I thought that would be the weak point but it was the strongest part. Amazing.
He did a brilliant job!! Got those pinched harmonics absolutely perfect! Well done!!
A+
Richard B. Indeed..he did great. Very nice job on all levels
Thes kids are AMAZING! I'm the old guy that LOVES Steely Dan. This put a smile right across my face.😎
Thanks it seems lots of people like this thing! M
Just great
The mid brass section is fabulous
The guy on harmonies was superb
I know, the entire band rocked.
The harmony is Amazing. I love this cover, what a great job.
100 percent spot on!! I liked the harmony dude more than the lead singer.
The lead singer was a little too "sing song-y" for my taste. Donald Fagen sings it straight.... he doesn't use any vibrato or yodel.
ua-cam.com/users/jacoboy123
@@FrankieBag0donuts i agree and it sounded rather thin til the harmony singer joined in. Almost need 2 singers to duplicate Donald Fagens richness.
The talent in that room is simply amazing. Still listening 2 yrs after I discovered this.
Without a doubt the best cover of any Steely Dan composition right people right instruments right equipment everything was right on spot on amazing Simply Amazing
Thanks Thomas, I wholeheartedly agree!
Thanks Thomas I wholeheartedly agree!
A+ for everyone!
Check out Brooklyn Charmers for some amazing SD covers
Al Hollywood it’s fantastic but Steely Damned version is the best
Excellent playing that accurately capsures this famous Steely Dan song.
This band makes me cry, that they did such a great job on this !
I'm still teary eyed. Amazing stuff.

I got really emotional watching this too and I have NO idea why!

As a musician and a singer, I am extraordinarily impressed by this group’s amazing performance- so tight! And also really blown away by such talented youngsters with a desire to successfully reproduce incredible music by Steely Dan from yesteryear!!!........
Hi Joseph thanks for the comment, I know the kids appreciate it!
So tight, just like steely Dan!!
@@taffyholvenstot8297 Thanks mucho for the comment!
Horns make everything better all the time. And thanks to all who made this wonderful music! A+
The bosshoss ‘don’t gimme that’. You will thank me
@@CorePathway Thank you.
Agree, can thank Bobby Keys for that in my book. 🎷
I was just telling my husband that last night. Lol. There's nothing like horns, or a nicely placed fiddle/violin in a song.
Tears in my eyes. Absolutely unbelievably fantastic. Not a speck of cereal there.
Well done.
Outstanding singers and musicians
Thank you for the kind words! and so true.
Been a fan since Pretzel Logic came out ! So glad to see young people play future classics...
Thanks Martin and yes Steely is a great resource for music students to learn everything about time, groove and musical complexities without being complex for complexity's sake
All excellent sounded awesome
Holy Shit,......this is outstanding,.....my faith in the younger generation is restored.
Lets not be too hasty, teacher picks the tunes.
@@tylerthompson1842 Wish I had teachers like this...
Love this. Hopefully the kids will appreciate the music 🎶 🙏 😌 🙂 🙌 ☺ 🎶
I'm impressed! 43 years after the original release, a very tasteful cover of this tune came about.
Maybe the best cover of this song ever...?
Tastefully? They covered it verbatim.
Foot stomping by the 2 trumpet players and the sax player next to them, head bobbing by the bassist. Don't forget the piano player. Is she jamming or what??? And of course, guitar solo ran away with the Grammy!! Awesome kids!!!! Good job, Marty. You're the man!!!!
Thanks so much A Flores! 72,900 views and counting!
Wowzer! These young folks knocked it out of the park! Not a single weak spot anywhere.
Thanks Michael, yes they were spot on right? Marty
From an old coot who has recorded forever and heard these songs forever, only one word: PERFECT. WOW. and I agree with Rose -- the best cover I have heard.
Well then, please hold my vodka while I turn you onto Leonid & Friends version of this song, which I think is even better then this version!
Watch & listen: ua-cam.com/video/P_8aZZ9d_EA/v-deo.html !
Look for covers by Brooklyn Charmers. Pretty damn good Steely Dan cover band.
A good cover, Leonid & Friends version is better. No comparison between guitarists. Check it out.....
@@mricciardi77 Leonid and Friends version is far superior. They are a super group from Russia and Ukraine and are seasoned musicians. This video is done by kids, and they did a great jog.
Horns were on point, and this is one of Steely Dan’s best horn dominant songs. Brilliant!
Don't know why I'm so late to the party but now that I'm here I just can't seem to leave. I keep listening and watching over and over. Bravo!
Barry thanks so much, all comments mean a lot to me, I know what you are saying, it's an infectious song, and great performances, I have been running at about 3500 views a month for months now. Marty
Your band took one of my all-time favorite songs and did an awesome cover of it. Thank you!

The only thing missing is the applause these fine young musicians deserve!

UA-cam's algorithm just discovered this. This is amazing. I love Steely Dan.
Hi epistte, thanks for the comment, and ya the algorithm seems like it's being kind to us. we have had another 2000 views in the past few days.
@@martywalsh5348 Ive watched Leonid and Friends version about 20 times. It takes guts to even try to cover Steely Dan because of their perfectionism. Do you do any other song by Fagan and Becker?
I've been obsessed with the music of Steely Dan since my boyfriend first played their greatest hits to me in 1981, the level of musicianship & production that has been achieved here by anybody's standards is just superb.
Thanks so much Lesley and yes Steely Dan was the bar back in the day :)
This is a classic! I hope every one of these talented musicians are enjoying massive success!
Yes many of them are! Great players, thanks for the comment it means a lot. Marty
One of my all time favorite tunes, and what an excellent rendition of it. Everything, performance(s), video production, sound. I'll never tire of watching it

Steely Dan wow geniuses Donald Fagan and Walter Becker. Saw them in concert blew my mind. Great Concert. My Old School one of my favorite songs of all time.
gives me chills, great restraint by all. wonderful
Man they got Steely Dan down pact!!! Beautiful!!!
I danced to this song with a college coed at a 10th reunion many years ago, the most memorable dance of my long life.
Glad to bring back some nice memories James
Well done, I’d pay to see this live.
I would too! Thanks for the post. You can see the vocalist David Stewart's band Migrant Motel at the Lollapalooza this year.

thanks it was a lot of fun to do and I know the kids dug it
Early 70s. 1973
These students have nailed this song. I have heard this song, live, in Toronto, on several occasions, and they should be highly commended for their efforts, WELL DONE!
I'm an old fan. Heartening to hear the kids play a classic. Superb. Made my day.

You "kids" killed it! LOVE the horns! Keep chargin'!!!
An excellent rendition. Well done friends.
THE KID'S NAIL'ED IT 100%...."OUTSTANDING".....
so glad you liked it!
People seem to love this and I thought I would add one more thing. This was recorded in my class as mentioned but dig this. No rehearsal. The engineers and the drummer show up at 8am for setup. The rest of the band is in by 8:45. Vocalists are in by 9am. We have from about 9:30 to 10:25 to record. This performance was done in less than an hour. :)
Marty Walsh that was an awesome take on that song. Was not a favorite of mine but still a good song. After watching this it became one. Thank you guys for doing such a fine job. I can't stop watching this video.

Awesome job from a guy who's been thumping bass for about 40 years.
I just found this and it's awesome. You should bring back The Boston Rag ;-)....that one is my favorite on the album. I have all of their recordings on vinyl and it's in my most listened to music.
I’ve probably watched this 20 times in the past week, and I love it more each time!!! 👏
Oh Chris I just love hearing that. These students did a masterful job!@ Marty
This actually brought me to tears. Partly it's the beauty and magic of Steely Dan. But also - this performance and recording sound amazing, the execution is flawless, and maybe also the respect and appreciation these young musicians are showing for a great piece of music. I hope someone sends this to Donald Fagen.
Incredible rendition. I have shared this and watched it about 20 times.
Tom, amazing, 20 times? I think that has to be some kind of record! Marty

An award! Excellent idea! :)
Well done guys, great to see the appreciation for Steely Dan across all generations. You're all extremely talented; please feel free to serve up some more SD covers!
Very good job! Especially the drummer, copped the feel perfectly.
Thanks Jon and ya she is a star!
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs. Always liked the syncopation in various areas of the song. Love the brass section. And the best is the grin on the drummers face when she closes the song out. She knows they just killed it!
Love how it takes 20 camera shots, 5 singers, and a full orchestra to capture this. Steely Dan was ridiculously over processed in the studio. God, such a miraculous result, though. God bless Donald Fagan, and may Walter Becker rest in blessed peace.
actually that's me running around with the camera, haha and one go pro stationary in the vocal booth. :)
just a post script, having listened to this work of art a few times its not just a work of art but a homage. my only regret is that I was not there to witness the recording.
Thanks for the kind words Stephen. It means a lot to see all of these comments. I know that students appreciate it as well.

@@djaconette Dave the lead singer David Stewart is in LA trying to get established, he has a band called Migrant Motel, the backing vocalist standing next to David is Jackie Foster who was on the voice season 1 in 2018, she blew the doors off the place. The bass player Julian Rodriguez is in Nashville I believe, as is the guitarist Matt Ernst that plays the solo. The other guitarist Keven Eknes is out touring with a theatrical show I believe. Ahh...Berklee. I was in a high school stage band from Maine competing. We made the finals every year. (1978 - 81") so I got to perform at Berklee performance center each year.
