For the 4TB/64GB model, I would agree. However, for the 1Tb/32gb early bird of 1100 USD, I think it makes a kind of sense. Much bigger battery, capable of double-sided m.2280 drives, really awesome color reproduction for the screen (trade off, not being 120hz vrr), USB 4 ports for lower entrance cost of eGPU (albeit lower performance compared to Rog XG stuff). If you bought a Rog Ally, power bank, and 2 Tb external hard drive, the total is creeping north of 900 USD. I'm not saying a Kun makes sense in all situations, but it isn't quite the fast and easy rejection when you add up what you have to do to make other hand helds in to a comparable experience.

Seeing that Genesis-style controller was a reminder of how much I miss having those two additional face buttons on controllers these days. It makes not only Genesis and Saturn emulation more true to the authentic experience, it makes the N64 experience better too, and I can imagine more contemporary games would benefit from it too. Maybe AYA can make a handheld with 6 face buttons next.
If I had a thousand US dollars to spend on a "handheld", I'm probably getting the best Galaxy phone or tablet I can get just so I can better justify the cost to myself because either will be something that's multipurpose. It's not just for games (even though it totally is), it's for UA-cam and all sorts of productivity too. I'd be lying if I said this Kun wasn't as cool as the back side of the pillow though. Based off your review; the type of person who can drop a grand on a mobile device just to play games and who will never miss the money is going to be very, very satisfied with this unit. As for me; I'll most likely enter your future contest and hope luck is on my side. Thanks, Taki for another entertaining review.
Thanks for the review. The Rog Ally is 699$, the base model for the Kun 512gb and 16gb RAM is 999$. Screen is better in some ways, you're getting 4 back buttons (although size and placement is questionable), hall sticks and triggers,.2 touch pads,. facial recognition,. bigger screen,.bigger battery, brighter screen, multiple IO, and better cooling system maybe (hard to say how it holds up over time) so it's not unreasonable pricing. If you have an eGPU already you can take advantage of that 54W. Not sure how the chip will hold over time. That stand looks flimsy and wonder if it will hold up. Using the Ally and switch, touch pads aren't necessary for me, windows work well with touch. D-pad isn't an issue since I don't use it much. But the benefit of this device is using that battery at similar watts as the Ally used to save battery. Performance will be the same but longer battery life. You can also get an eGPU cheaper than the XG mobiles. After all that it's a bummer it's so hard to get in. The back buttons are iffy ergonomics. Looking at their product page the bump in performance,3-10 FPS depending on game, between 30-54W isn't worth the price/fps. Agree with emulation but I think this device would be good for cloud and stream gaming as well. I think there's a lot of extras here quality wise ( sticks,. triggers,. screen,. touch pads,.4 rear buttons) that makes it an ok buy over the Ally. If you want VRR use an external monitor/TV (most ppl have one) with VRR. I don't think you get this for the 54W TDP,. You get it for the screen but more so the battery life, playing at the low wattages and settings that ppl are playing on the Ally. I would've kept the RAM at 16gb and offered 512gb/1TB SSD and then 32gb RAM with 512gb/1TB to keep prices down let ppl upgrade storage themselves and then offer a dGPU for a higher price..64gb RAM is overkill,. maybe 32gb too,. especially when this thing will be outdated by time games require that much RAM on a handheld.. looks interesting,.wait until other reviews come out but might be worth waiting for a deeper sale or finding it on eBay
I can remember when I first saw handheld PC's years ago and I said back then "I'll get the first one at a good price" and yeah I've had my steam deck a while now and it's awesome, I'll never say it's stupid making another so expensive but at that price it'd have to be perfect with Egpu support and everything and that looks far from perfect in my eyes
The steam deck is essentially perfect, steam has been doing far more than necessary keeping up with the thing, I have no idea why I see people talking shit about it and picking things like the ROG ally over it
Getting one of these high-end handhelds where I'm from is hard... Getting any one of the handhelds on your channel would be a dream come true.... Your channel is one of the best on games.... Hope you keep doing what you enjoy doing 💯💯💯👍👍👍👍
This reminds me of the Neo-Geo system that came out many moons ago. The graphics were the same you would find in an arcade. What killed it: the price of the gaming cartridge which at the time was over 100 bucks which was insane for a gaming cartridge. This handheld looks great and has nice specs but I'm not sure who this is designed for. Nice gaming laptops can be had for the same price point as the top in unit here. I'm sure folks will buy this device but for many people, the price point will put this out of reach.
Honestly ayaneo with them releasing a new system every year or less, makes me not wanna get one cause of the fear from the lack of support on older generations. That’s why i think the ally and especially the steam deck are great buys, where i can feel secure knowing my purchase would still be supported for years to come.
I can't believe still some people asking for support...... Bro what support you want? 1. GPU + CPU + Motherboard all come from AMD drivers - ✅ 2. OS software all come from Microsoft Windows - ✅ 3. Aya Space it comes in all devices not to specific one - ✅ So what exactly you looking for? Stop making excuses
@@TRX25EXyeah this is also what i dont get, we get amd driver updates and aya while slow still update their ayaspace and now my air pro gen 1 with ayaspace 2 have better fan curves and better UI for changing power profiles, i dunno what support these devices should get if you ran to no problems the only problem aya has is QC issue but every other brand also has that problem, its not always a deal breaker and aya does have customer support that responds timely for me when i had shipping issue so i really dunno the aya hate personally
also i used to have problems with joystick mode not responding and the mouse speed in the earlier days on my air pro and its been fixed with updates.. so like... whats the problem?
Honestly, for their highest tier sku, I was expecting $2K, so I guess I can understand the price. If you feel like this device is too expensive, you probably think the highest end Alienware is too expensive, too. And that's fine, but it isn't unreasonable, this device just isn't for everyone, it's for those who want the top of the top, best of the best, and are willing to pay for it. I, personally, really like it, and I'm super impressed that one can buy a handheld gaming PC with 64 gigs of ram. That's insane. I'll be keeping my eye on this as an upgrade to my ROG Ally. For that one, RAM is the only real drawback of it, not to mention how great it would be to have a device with 4TB of storage in it, too. Thanks for an excellent presentation, Taki.
5:21 My issue with circle dpads, and that includes my beloved ROG Ally, is that it really interferes in games like Pizza Tower or classic MegaMan where you have forward diving done by pressing down+forward. I continually get accidental slides in MegaMan, rendering tougher stages way too frustrating. Pizza Tower just got impossible for me while maintaining sanity. Otherwise, i love it and it feels great in everything else I've tried. Even Street Fighter. (Modern ones anyways)
At that price point, I would just buy a new console, with a few games, and a steam Deck/Switch/Ally. Then I would save the rest for something important.
Overpriced, but not that surprising considering AYANEO can't subsidize the cost with game sales. I'm glad the SSD is a M.2 2280, here's hoping a Steam Deck 2 or ROG Ally 2 follows suit!
1600p integer scales for 800p and would look great for lighter games and __streaming__. That last one is the big one. I really hope to see a screen like this on the Deck 2 for this reason.
Ayaneo needs to reel it in and keep it simple. If you don't have a PC yet, you can take that $1700 and build a high end PC with specs that blow this thing out of the water. If you do own a PC, and just want a handheld to go with it, you can buy a Steamdeck, or ROG Ally, and still have enough money left over to make a huge upgrade to your rig, or buy the monitor of your dreams. The price to value isn't there.
6 extra buttons is so beautiful and such a beautiful feature. also those analog sticks are by far, the best over any other handheld. This device for those two controller features alone, make it the best option for people who plan on using a handheld for competitive shooters. My rog ally and my lenovo GO , fail in the thumb stick department for me but the Go does have 5 extra buttons which prevents me from wanting to plug in my razer wolverine controller to it. This would absolutely be a device I would of considered over the GO and the Ally. too bad i could pretty much get both of those two devices for the price of this 1
Circle D-Pads should, in theory, be a far better thing to have, so they should get better if more attention is payed, or options to swap out for different styles to suit. There is no doubt that this is a very competent device but it should be at that price. Whilst out of the price range of many, it is a pointer to what is to come later, which will also be cheaper. At this price, use as more than just a gaming device may come to many a mind to justify the cost. The screen looks gorgeous.
i mean realistically the 3ds has a d-pad and compared to both of these i would say that the 3-ds did the d-pad much better, if they had made it a press button along with the d-pad it would be the apex of d-pads.
I love that it's so over the top! It's so cool that there is a device out there that just went overboard and maxed out everything. We only get the Asus ROG alley off the shelf here in South Africa, which sucks (no Steam deck or Legion go yet)... I would love to buy something like this, but it's so far out of my budget 😢
For that price, it's really hard to justify over a lower end gaming laptop. Especially when you mention that it's destined to be played on a table due to it's weight.
The specs are as good as similar price ranged laptops but it's even more portable. For it's size, this has very good spec per dollar value. But you'll have to sacrifice battery
@@acwbit2368 Ofc it's a dedicated gpu. But factor in the cpu, igph, ram, ssd quality screen etc. These all are usually not to be found at laptops lower than 1,5k (usually they make one thing stand out for an easy sell). And I know bc I've been looking at hundreds for over a week now. They corner cut so much you usually get overcharged even if you think you made a good deal (misleading cpu names, low nitts, bad screen quality, slow ram etc). Sure this is very expensive but it doesnt cut corners making it good value for its specs. Definitely not a steal but still good value.

The screen resolution would likely be a non-issue if you could just force integer scaling and game at 800p, basically like running 1080p on a 2160p display with integer scaling, no blurry garbage. The blacks on that panel look incredible too.
@@DonfraslI disagree. The Legion Go starting at $699 and does much more than this. On a used market you can get a Steam Deck $320 (Steam) and a Rog Ally $530 (BestBuy) = $850 and add a Nintendo Switch and be at or under $999
I've been waiting for updates on that device forever. Currently have a steam deck and plan on getting the Legion Go. Was hoping the Aya neo next 2 would've been here by now.
This seems like an awesome device, but the price is extremely high. I'm also of the opinion that higher than 1080P on a handheld device is completely pointless. The power needed to run the device at 1600P instead of 1080P could've gone to running the games at better setting that aren't resolution and potentially better battery life. Other than that I would actually consider getting one if I was completely broke at the moment.
I’m still perfectly happy with my Ayaneo 2. I just wanna pair it up with egpu when I’ll have some cash to spare and I’m a happy portable and desktop gamer.
1. Didn't you mention in your win mini video that you will be doing total power draw comparison for future videos/devices? Not sure if missed it but dont seem to see that here. The total power draw seems terrible for this based on other videos/screenshots, which kind of reduce the advantage of the bigger size battery. They advertise the 4g capability but now mention need to buy additonal modem card separately which is going to add to the cost (and chance of spoiling the device when installing it). 2. Does the trackpad get recognize as a trackpad by steam controller configuration?
I mean, if you have to play at a desk or table to be comfortable, then you can get better gaming for the $1600+ out of a desktop or laptop. It sounds like it's kind of too heavy for laying down and the loo is not ideal for hard to replace electronics. So that leaves couch and plane type travel situations. Between the reduced portability and circle dpad, I'm kinda sad, because there's otherwise a lot to like.
Handheld pc had existed way before the steam deck and yet, steam deck is the one that finally made it mainstream. And that happened for one reason only. The price. No matter how many variations ayaneo or gpd coming out with, if they keep going for niche product like this, they can't really compete with something like sd or rog ally.
This isn’t to compete with the steam deck, the steam deck is for poor people and this is for rich gamers who don’t give a shit but genuinely want hardware that is so so so so so much better than the steam deck. It’s basically a portable ps4, only poor people play it. Not to mention it’s so ugly, terrible battery life
My brothers and I felt that the d-pad on the Genesis 6 button controller was one of the best d-pads ever. Thanks to the shape of the pad, it doesn't feel as odd as some of the newer circle d-pads.
I think at 1600p, upscaler such as RSR or Lossless Scaling is a must for alot of game. We'll see if AMD Frame Generation (Fluid Motion something) are able to changes that for the handheld area.
I want one. Looks nice. Big thing that puts me off is the borders. Why i bought aya neo 2 and sold my deck. Small thing that makes a big difference. Id love to see loads of screens inc deck oled, side by side to compare what a difference it really makes. In reality it doesnt make a difference. People have spent a year or two pleased with there deck. Which proves, a nicer screen is cool but not the be all and end all. Spemd more time playing a less time looking at gow green the grass is. Battery life is king. Im often down grading everything's for an extra half hour before bed.
The issue with these circle D pads are the fragile little tabs underneath the housing. They always break over time. Overall, the device is too massive and too expensive to compete with everything else in the market.
@@PAUL-MHSD is dirt cheap compared to this, has useful track pads and a dpad that isn't garbage. As well as a lot of 2nd market accessories and SteamOS. For the cost of this you could build a very decent PC, buy and upgrade your SD storage and screen.
This is why I will still wait 3-4 years or may be 5 before getting the game handheld, I would never play a game lower than high preset on at least 1080p resolution. I am hoping in 3-5 years time the tech ill be good enough to achieve that on newer games of the time. I really love these type of devices but I will refrain from getting one until it gets up to the mark i want it to be which is why i really hope that these device sell well so that we can see the newer models. Looking forward for the Lenovo Legion Go performance review when the device release.
This is perfect for me when i'm on my yacht and one of the intoxicated supermodels drops the caviar overboard so we need to wait for more to be air dropped. I get the portability tax, but i'd like to know Aya's ideology with this.
@@TheUltimateHacker007 The main point is that the people actually buying these things have no idea about the actual value of the device and just blindly accept it since these chinese companies have the market. Fools and their money are soon parted.
@@zaldronthesage And my point is that it all depends on individual use case and taste. Besides, the aya kun is a damn good deal for its spec per dollar value. And you know this if you've seen the scummy laptop marketplace for what it is today.
@@zaldronthesageyeah It's called settling with what's available and what's best in your interests. Didn't say it was cheap but if you scale this product to laptop size, they're usually similar spec /price.
I dont think doing a shoryuken in 3rd strike demonstrate the accuracy of the Dpad. Doing normal attacks then cancel it into super will be a better test for me. If you can do it consistently then you know the Dpad is great.
I clicked just because I saw what looks like track pads. I'm definitely interested. Especially now that I know SD won't be seeing any hardware updates until 2025, at the earliest, according to Valve. I probably wouldn't buy this one, but I will definitely be in the market in a year or so. That's about how long I expect the Steam Deck to continue to be a device I would use daily. Starfield/BG3 are *really* pushing this thing so hard and it's already hitting the wall against less funded titles that aren't as well optimized, which is a pretty common thing in the Steam marketplace. Honestly, I'd prefer to go with an ASUS or maybe a GPD WIN Max. (I would prefer the GPD, but the comic sans on their website has me a little more than wary.)
Honestly all I really want is a Steam Deck version with this kind of colour reproduction. 720p for me is fine as I find on smaller screens internal rendering resolution is more important than output resolution in terms of showing off finer details and reducing aliasing. That's not saying higher screen resolution doesn't look better--especially for a device exceeding that 8" mark--but for the power constraints that are going to continue to be a constant issue with handhelds, I'd probably choose 720p into the future just to allow the devices to ramp up more of those detail settings and framerates.
@@Yixdy - Yeah, it's a bargain basement IPS screen. Even budget laptops and tablets five or six years ago had better colour reproduction than the Deck, so you're only getting a portion of the basic colours that games are meant to display. It's considerably worse than the first gen Switch, which has far better sRGB coverage. I'm assuming it's because when the deck was being released Valve didn't have many panel options to choose from with that size and resolution, but it'll be my primary reason for upgrading when an upgraded Deck comes around.
@@40Sec eh, I don't mind it at all bc honestly, isn't noticable imo. But of course how something looks is insanely subjective, maybe I'll buy a replacement screen, 1920x1200, 87% sRGB coverage, etc. For 99 bucks, not bad at all!
@@Yixdy - I'm not talking subjective here. It has been measured, and it's a garbage screen. Whether people are happy with drab displays that can't represent proper colours in their games is another matter. I'd say this would be like many people being happy with the visuals of weak TN panels despite IPS and OLED being miles better, but even most TN panels now are better than what's in the Steam Deck.
@TakiUdon Can you ask Ayaneo/any 7840 device maker about enabling the Ryzen Ai? I am sure you know the 7840u has an AI Chip with 10 Tops on the silicone, BUT it MUST be enabled by the oem. By default it is disabled. Would be a shame if a capability of the chip will never be usable because the oem doesn't enable it. There is a footnote on AMD's site about the AI chip that states the oem must enable it.
@@TakiUdonquestion, so it's unfortunate that they do not ship with a 4g network card, but is there a place to install one in the unit? I initially placed the preorder because I was excited to have that option.
The price really is a shame huh? The screen even with UA-cam's compression did love impressive. For me, I play mostly Japanese/Asian games on PC (as I'm an Xbox first gamer and missing certain titles annoys the heck out of me). I'm sure the 7840U would more than run the stuff I enjoy playing. Plus I DO want to do that emulation run for GC, PS2, 3DS (and Switch) stuff. Still $1700 and that's probably USD, that's a proper gaming laptop at that point without the performance and that's hard to square even though I want a PC Handheld to comfortably play in bed instead of how I do now with my current laptop.
@@Donfraslstill, it's not hard to fill up a 4TB SSD and there's an argument to be made for not getting less than 32GB of RAM, these days. If one only wants a 512GB, 16GB RAM, might as well buy a better value device, as opposed to the one for pushing things to their limits.
@@Fleshlight_Reviewer the performance is crap but it's the end game because if any device is worth and demanding 1k plus and can't run starfield it's not worth it and it's just going to be a emulating machine for retro games and older 2020 pc games, my gaming laptop from 1 year ago still perform well and it's NOT an AMD it's a intel i7 1oth gen, I don't see the point in this device which I paid 600 for my laptop with touchscreen, has a graphics card, it plays switch games and emulates well all the way up to GameCube games, the only thing that will turn heads in a handheld device that works with windows AND plays starfield smoothly without being a slideshow, this is just filler imo, my steam deck is fine for emulation and all the way up to PS2 games plays well and cost me 600 which in turn is a bargain compared to these bloated recent devices that just barely do a bit better than the steam deck, you see my point here 🤷♀️🤷♀️

Playing street fighter series is a joy with those 6 face buttons.
It's an impressive machine with a way steeper price... unfortunately that's the dela breaker to me. Price is just way overboard, even though I get it

This handheld would make sense to actually include a simcard slot, so you can always stay online on foot. Especially for the price.

@@Fleshlight_Reviewer lol chill bro, I'm talking about the little helper he had to open it up. 2:12 😅
Wish you had mentioned 800p integer scaling on that display.

I'm wondering what 64 GB of RAM even accomplishes. My desktop computer with 16 GB does everything I have tried? All the games. Serious question

They are subsidizing rnd through indigogo
They subsidized from igg campaigns from previous devices
Lenovo Legion Go sh!ts on all of them.
Hopefully the Legion Pro and the Ally set a precedent, cause Ayaneo is out of control@@powerhouse884
Actually, for ROG ally, you can use the 2280 in it. Just buy a PCIE4.0 Transfer Board for Rog Ally Handheld SSD Adapter 90 Degrees and voilà
1600p integer scales for 800p and would look great for lighter games and __streaming__.
That last one is the big one. I really hope to see a screen like this on the Deck 2 for this reason.
Im super digging the white color, great vid.
Miss the old alienware days when it was 3 screws to open up the laptop.
This would absolutely be a device I would of considered over the GO and the Ally. too bad i could pretty much get both of those two devices for the price of this 1
Adorable little engineer
best dpad i have ever played on handhald was Odin Pro, best screen (color / clarity) was GPD Win4

Not to mention it’s so ugly, terrible battery life
The deck hasnt even sold 1 million yet 🧢🤡
@@Jokerxeno1compair it to and xbox one, that was just as ugly as the steam deck

Interesting point. Seems like everyone uses Street Fighter.

Nice, but I think I'll wait for the Next 2!
Wait, what's wrong with the steam deck? Screen not pretty enough?

To just give you an idea I recently built my own arcade cabinet a few years back (because its significantly cheaper to built and have custom art) but now i want something portable when i travel. I would love to get a suggestion from you of a good portable device and you seem like an amazing guru in this area! ^_^ Love the content and thanks ahead of time
The Dpad on the newest Xbox controllers is awesome. I find it baffling if people don't like it. In my opinion, the only other excellent modern Dpad is PS Vita's.
For a 28+W I'd rather see if they'd use H/HS SKU with faster ram, the U is low power optimized and runs best at about 15W with range +-5W
Source? I think they're essentially the same silicon.
AYANEO needs an intervention
I am going to be honest. If they copy the switch lite's d-pad, it would be perfect. Still skeptical on the battery life.
