  • Cold shock is our body's reaction to sudden immersion in cold water, for some people it is fatal. Every year in the UK 400 people die in outdoor bodies of water*, knowing some simple techniques to survive the first couple of minutes after immersion is critical. Understanding what to do is a message we should be passing on to everyone who will listen. #outdoorswimming #coldshock #respectthewater

    Great video as always! Such an important message and I don’t understand why water safety is not taught in all schools especially just before summer holidays?
    Floating is such a great thing to do in the water, not only life saving but great for just relaxing and emptying your head! Always finish my sea swim with a little float about !!

    Well done Rachel all of this information should be taught in schools! Excellent job.👍😁

    Lots of good information and gentle safety reminders in this video Rachel. No matter what the temperature, I always get into the water in 2 phases, lower body first followed by the upper body. AND once my breath is calm and regulated, I love me a starfish float on my back!! It’s the most incredible form of relaxation out there!! Now Rachel, I must ask you about those docks in the background… are those the Southampton Docks? Is this where the Titanic would have set sail from? My Grandmother at the age of 12 and her mother (my Great Grandmother) were supposed to be on the Titanic, they had tickets and everything. Would you believe… sometime prior to departure they ran into family friends and spent a lot of time deliberating on whether to immigrate to the US or to Canada, and in doing so they got delayed, they were late, and they missed the boat… and that’s why I’m here today. I guess sometimes it pays to miss the boat. Thanks for this one today, Ⓜary💦🏊‍♀

      Blimey Mary that’s a cracking story. Yes, it is Southampton Docks. Not sure exactly where the Titanic set sail from. But it will have been along there somewhere as there’s a lot of quayside. Now then Mary, someone in your family must have caught the boat or plane though? Was Gran the explorer? Rach x

    Such an important topic to discuss as well as secondary drowning. Another unknown phenomenon. I remember at my aquatic first aid course they said if someone is constantly coughing for half an hour after being in the water get to hospital asap as they may be drowning. So important to know these simple facts.

    Very good info Rachel, as always. One added tip for cold water "swimmers" is wearing earplugs in cold water is highly recommmended. Cold water can damage your ear drums.

      Totally agree 💯!! Earplugs keep the cold water out, and also help to prevent ear infections. Ⓜary💦🏊‍♀

    Getting head far enough back to get your ears in is a great tip 👍. As someone who feels like I don’t float that well (!) I will be having a go later 😊

    Very good information Rachel,me and my daughter go every Saturday to swim in a lake in Staffordshire,so we will do the lie on our backs for a couple of minutes to give us useful practice,as we’ve not really practiced it,if we ever feel in a panic .👍

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  Рік тому +1

      Great idea it’s surprising how far back your head needs to be in the water to bring your legs up. Likely to float a little lower in fresh water too, all the more reason to have a go before you need it x

    In Greece there is a religious tradition where every year, on January 6th, a priest throws a cross in the water and swimmers compete over who's going to get it. When i was 17 i decided to give it a try and actually dive in the cold water. I thought i had trained myself for this by taking cold showers but i was most certainly not prepared. One second after i rushed into the water i felt like i couldn't breathe. I tried lying back but i couldn't float because the river wasn't pulling me up. And the water was shockingly deep so all i could really do was keep swimming and hope i wouldn't die on the spot. It was terrifying.

    Why would you swim at an industrial site ?

    • @EverydayAthleteRach
      @EverydayAthleteRach  Місяць тому

      It’s not an industrial estate, I’m opposite a container port in Southampton Docks in the River Test. It’s fascinating seeing all the harbour traffic.
