Wow! What an incredible response we’ve had to this video! Clearly there are a lot of people that feel under represented in disc golf content and we could not be more honoured to support/represent this community! We, are local.
I recently got back into playing after 9 years and sometimes I would rather watch someone closer my skill level than someone who isnt, it gives me a more accurate depiction of what to expect.
Your so right about the weight and speeds that normal humans need. I started playing again after 2 decades off and bought a couple max weight 12 & 13 speeds, and also moved from almost sea level, that was a huge mistake. The first driver that I could make work was a 158g Diamond and it was game changing to throw a disc that my arm could handle. I've got to where I can get a proper flight from less flippy drivers but stay around the 165g range and still haven't got consistent results with anything over a 10 speed. This disc looks like one I may need to try. Also we need all the "normal" player videos we can get, cause it does no good to see how a disc fly's for a pro unless you have the arm for it.
Thanks for responding to my video! I am happy you enjoyed throwing the light weight mamba as much as I did. I throw roughly 400-425 backhand and forehand. Keep up the good work!!! 🧊🧊
I am in my 40s and out of shape, so seeing an Average Joe throw discs is very much appreciated. I watch the FPO, because even though the could throw circles around me, I feel that is more representative of what I can aspire to than MPO players.
For most Average, MA3 level players, 11 speed discs are too fast and we can't get them up to speed to fly as they were engineered to. This pretty much means it will be more stable than the flight numbers suggest with more pronounced fade at the end. However, a lighter, (I throw 148 - 150 gram Gstar Mambas) will fly more understable and will be pretty neutral (ergo, straight) with easier flex/S-turn and easier hyzer flip up to flat. I throw a 150 gram MVP Fission Wave and a 145 gram Fission Insanity too. The Wave is similar to the Mamba where the Insanity is similar to the Valkyrie. I enjoy a much more reliable flight with these than any heavier weight discs. I do have a 155 and a 170 gram Mamba I use for headwind throws. The 148/150 will drift far to the right on a RHBH headwind throw but almost always fades back at the end. I just aim really left of the target to try to land in the direction of the target :)
I’m 54, have only been playing 3 years, but my 150g GStar Mamba has been my main driver for awhile now. It’s ironically more stable than a few of my other heavier Star Mambas. It’s the lightest one I carry, most all other are close to max weight or upper 160’s in weight. Good review, keep it up 👍
Great point about weight affecting release! Yes! I am blown away by the response to this video. I will definitely do more content that is relatable. There is actually a shop here in Calgary called Lifesport, that makes a point of carrying light discs for newer players. We are planning to drop that video soon! Thanks for taking the time to write such a well-thought response! Excited to see our little community growing!
I bought a 149g gstar Katana awhile back and it immediately was easy max distance for me. However as my form improved I was able to throw more stable discs further. Now days the Destroyer is my go to distance driver. However i bag them in different weights depending on how stable of a throw I need. The one thing I've noticed about light weight discs is they seem to get up to speed quick and look like they're going to go a mile, but then as they slow down towards the end of their flight they just sort of die. While a max weight disc seems to get better forward ground play at the end.
I'm a rec-level player and I did a video where I threw my favorite driver off every tee and for some upshots - a well-used Innova Leopard - and was told by someone I didn't do the disc justice because of inconsistent flights caused by the disc or the way I threw it. He didn't think watching a newer player throwing a very beat in disc proved the disc is great. That's not really the point. The vast majority of disc golfers are in the novice-rec range and it's a lot more instructive to see how discs fly for most people, and in that video I spent a lot of time a) talking about the disc (history, use cases), and b) demonstrating the most common shots in the hands of someone my level, and c) relating my experiences with the disc. Side note: I bag a 170g GStar Mamba, and I have a friend who bags 1 in the 150-160 range (he's lost a couple but he just replaces them with another one) and for us we get max distance with them because of the profile. It's a law of diminishing returns over something like a 6-7 speed disc, but the aerodynamics do help if you get the disc at the right angle, and you put enough speed on them. Also the skip factor is useful in some situations.
Yes Nick! We're a fan of your channel!! Thanks so much for joining the conversation and sharing your experiences! I bought a compact cart and use the umbrella holder for my camera off of your recommendation!
I can't get over 300ft and enjoy seeing content from people who have a bit more average of a skill level and that's no disrespect at all. Someone who can crush 400+ ft throwing a disc doesn't help me much if that's not the flight at all I'm going to get because of form issues or still learning. Awesome content, just subscribed.
Weight is hardly talked about in my experience and I never even knew about different weights when I started 2 years ago. People recommended discs and I bought them. I still have a couple of max weight discs from when I started, but they rarely come of my bag because I don't have the arm speed for them. By chance I picked up a Valkyrie and couldn't figure out why I threw it so much further and its slight path looked more like what I watched on videos. Turned out it was 156g. 90% of my discs are now under 168g and I am enjoying the game so much more., despite being labeled a girly disc thrower.
I own the fact that I don't throw far! Also, I know some girls that absolutely RIP so I don't think that statement would mean much here in Calgary. I've got a video upcoming where I do a mic'd up round with Jo Henderson and while she doesn't have a cannon for an arm, she probably throws as far *likely farther than me and I'm good with that! I know I don't have a huge arm, so I've been really working on other parts of my game. Approach/putting/smart game play is where you can make up so many strokes on your competition!
Good Job Ryan, yes, I for one, appreciate someone thats not a pro sharing and showing discs..and their flights, keep it up, I tore my RC in 3 places twice..doah! but have healed myself, I think some of us need not try to throw as hard as we can and far,.. what matters is no over torking our shoulder arm , elbow, think long term...so, I use lighter weight discs, and have much funm which is the real reason we're doing this right? thanks again
I like lightweight discs. I throw like 80-90 meters on good weather conditions on flat ground. (280-300 feet) But my form is not perfect every day. 😂 You should try L64 Diamond on like 155 grams. I have both Opto & Gold plastic. Gold is a bit more stable then the Opto plastic. Great discs for a bit lower armspeed. If you can you should try it out. I have a Mamba but not lightwieght. Works good on a perfect day. But Im looking for it in lightweight but can not find it in Sweden at the moment. Thanks for a great video. 👏 Most of us is not on PRO level so we need to see normal people throw discs. 😂👏
YES Sweden!!! Love it. Well you should check out Limber Disc Golf! They get light-weight stuff in and I believe they ship world-wide. Could be pricey, but definitely worth checking out!
From my 140g Destroyer to my new 156g Pure, light discs have been game changers. I did it in tennis when I stopped copying pros with heavy stiff racquets and in golf with a too stiff shaft. I am not a pro, don’t have the speed or strength so why not make it as easy as possible! Thanks for the content… with everything about longest drive (like the other golf) finesse and easy of play for us mere mortals is easily forgotten
lightweight drivers for people throwing 350 or less make sense. you might need max weight into the wind but outside of that at least under 170g but more like low 150 to mid 160s make a huge difference
As air density decreases (as one goes up in elevation) lift will be reduced. It makes sense to decrease weight. 5000' is about 80% as dense so dropping disc weight is logical so a 170g disc at sea level is equivalent to a 135g disc at 5000'. A warm humid day compared to a cold dry day is about a 5% weight change.
I'm an "average" player, so I was really happy to see this video. So happy, in fact, that I went and picked up the lightest G Star Mamba I could find (148 g), and played a round with it in my bag. It will be staying in my bag - I usually have 250-275 ft. drives, but I actually parked a 320 ft. hole with the G Star Mamba. Good call!
I played for almost 20 years with only max weight drivers. Now, in my mid 40s, I've gone to 160ish on all of my drivers. I throw further now then I did 10 years ago with lighter versions of the same discs. 163 gram Roadrunner, 163 gram Tern, those two discs give me 400+. Weight is super important
Lighter weights. Quicker to ignition, less resistance to turn due to less density/volume/weight. Post Production Profiling (PPP) will always play a part in flight as well. Often, a hyper flat disc will be faster, responding faster in both sides of a disc's flight. Less glide due to less airspace from flatness. Domey is slower from the disc taking more space for the air to have to work through, producing more glide, distributing it's turn for a longer period of time with less speed.
I think the max weight obsession is silly, looking forward to a video about that. It's partly a macho thing, and partly because mfg's didn't used to be as good at making stable discs in lighter weights, imo. Good vid!
eh. I throw mostly max weights because I know I can regularly get them. If I fall in love with a 150g disc, I may not be able to get more of them. It's got nothing to do with being macho. I can't prove that to you, but I promise, if you met me, you would not describe me as macho. I'm just a big fan of consistency in my discs. As the video says as an amateur, my arm is not super consistent, so I ask for that consistency wherever I can get it. Disc weight is one of those areas.
Ideally you throw max weight because of consistency. If you can't get a max weight 11/12 speed to max distance than you need to disc down to a 9/10 speed that is more understable (such as a valkyrie or a beast). Throwing ultra light weight discs is just going to hurt your game in the long run as it is a crutch.
I bagged a 149g Destroyer for a long time before moving to Lone Star Discs and it was great for a 320 ft avg arm guy. I am more conscious about disc weights now more than ever. Great video Ryan! Keep up the great work! Check out Lone Star Disc Lima Plastic, 150-155g and pretty much their entire lineup is available in Lima!
Great discs for casuals would be a Roadrunner, Leopard3, IT. I have these in my bag after a chronic, untreated pitching injury disabled my RHFH, so I began play with my left hand as well. My left hand is weaker than right, so I reduce the weights by 6-10gs and use the same molds. Left and right handed I throw the same distance.
Try a 150 gram Star Destroyer. I have one that is by far my longest disc and it's cool because it turns over but still has some stability to possibly fight out of it.
There is actually a bunch of pros who also throw lighter weight discs. I know specifically a handful of the top prodigy players do. This including Gannon buhr whom has an absolute cannon. His go to D1’s are both 167-168g, he explains it on a video. In the video he says something like “you get the same flight and distance with less effort “
Hey Local, it was me who said you weren’t consistent enough. I just meant not consistent enough in your angle control to compare the different plastics of the hex. Not trying to put you down, I’m very appreciative of people like you who go to all the effort to make great content . I throw about the same distance as you so I’m happy to see your disc reviews. Thanks for the quality content.
All good my friend! I simply used the example as a way to emphasize the point that I don’t pretend to be an elite player! Certainly no hard feelings. Happy to help provide useful info for anyone interested. Appreciate the follow up message.
To be fair, the reason most people throw max weight is simply due to availability. You just can't find every disc in every weight. I personally like 150g.
@@localdiscgolf I started 20 years ago. It was always hit and miss what you could get. You can get 1 disc lighter, but good luck trying to standize your bag on a specific weight.
Light weight or under stable discs = easy distance. I have a max weight star Mamba that is pretty beat up and it is one of my furthest flyers. I can throw it over 400ft on an easy hyzerflip line that fades back at the end. I’ll use it on flip up forehands and as a roller disc. It’s great and fun to throw.
I love your comment about how people want to see how an average person throws because I can’t throw destroyers. I can’t throw Zeus’s they just don’t fly like a pro wants them to fly but a mamba is a disc that I love. Keep up the good content.
I happened upon a 158g roadrunner and it flew so much better and was easy to finesse than my other roadrunners. Got a 295ft. Ace with it. Ever since, I've gone down 15 or 20g's in weight for all my distance drivers. I buy all my wife's disc's in 140-155g
I use an Aquaflight Swift for 250-300 turnover shots olaying at 4500' elevation. The Dragonfly is a flippy midrange good for 200-250 at my elevation. Great discs for lower arm speeds and elevation.
I've been using the mamba for 3 years and the 162g champion mamba flat not domey is the best one to get. Now in sidewinder I suggest 162g domey champion its stable but glidey.
I don't like how iceberg reviews older disc because a newer made mamba or sidewinder is more stable. I almost bought a fac dye tl today it felt really good in my hand. I lost my stock neutron Relay. Might was an it. 7 5 ←1 1. Felt like a little roadrunner.
I have a little distaste for Iceberg just because of how he grifted every little bit of drama out of the Brodie/Paul fallout, but I do like non-professional reviews.
Well, I’m sure he attempts to report on anything deemed current/noteworthy. Seems like as the sport grows, there is more TMZ stuff in the sport and like it or not, it often yields engagement which creators are striving for. But yes! He’s doing some great review-style content and so are we! I’m an average player with so many videos planned for this summer so stay tuned!!!
@@localdiscgolf I can respect that he is doing what he thinks is best for growth, and I watched the video, so I can't really say it didn't work. However, I don't think it's a good long term growth strategy. It's better to be honest and stay out of the mud. Leaves people with a more positive feeling towards you. To be honest it's not just him, I feel less warm towards Paul and Brodie since that drama too. But speculation (especially when it's nonsense like Paul saying he won't bag the Zone OS being a dig at Brodie) is just kind of gross.
I went into this review thinking this disc was going to be an immediate roller. Some people will demand a very specific weight. However, I think at least 10 grams is an amount where you start to see/feel a difference. The light-weight meant it flipped easily, but it also faded faster as it lost speed quicker.
🤣 I feel like the “138g Mamba” part was the clickbait! It was a video I wouldn’t have made had I not seen Iceberg’s vid! And he loved it so much I had to see try it myself!

So fun!
I love your comment about how people want to see how an average person throws because I can’t throw destroyers. I can’t throw Zeus’s they just don’t fly like a pro wants them to fly but a mamba is a disc that I love. Keep up the good content.
The response to this video has been awesome, so we've definitely got more content coming on this topic. Cheers!
I happened upon a 158g roadrunner and it flew so much better and was easy to finesse than my other roadrunners. Got a 295ft. Ace with it. Ever since, I've gone down 15 or 20g's in weight for all my distance drivers. I buy all my wife's disc's in 140-155g
I’ll see if I can get my hands on one to show off! Thanks for sharing 👍
@@localdiscgolf my wife has a 148g mamba and a 149g roadrunner. She loves the roadrunner.
@@localdiscgolf I have a Tern in 159g, it's ridiculously easy to throw long.
I may have these discs in my cart at Limber Disc Golf
Mamba has got to be a fantastic forehand anny-flip up disc, too bad I gave my Mamba to my sister, now I just use my Diamond for easy forehand flipups.
I throw 165 mamba beautiful hyzerflips and easy distance.
I bet it does!
I tried a 130’s DX mamba, and I was getting hyzer flip to turn with 30% power, it was awesome.
Boom
Aquaflight also makes understable light discs.
Thanks!! I’ll check em out!!
I use an Aquaflight Swift for 250-300 turnover shots olaying at 4500' elevation. The Dragonfly is a flippy midrange good for 200-250 at my elevation. Great discs for lower arm speeds and elevation.
A g-star mamba is strictly a roller disc!
Not the first time I’ve heard that! 👊😂
Great content. At 62, I really dont want to rip my arm off 😅 so this is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
When selecting unstable discs remember that the DX plastic is usually less stable than any of Innova’s other plastics.
Great point! We'll try to remember to add that in the future.
I'm consistently inconsistent 👍
So many of us are!!!
Thanks for the advice!
Its not really all that different from what my diamond does or a vip air sword. Both have same flight and are really common! I throw max of about 320.
I was just thinking about 150g Halo Star Mamba
Great disc!!!
As far as subbing to iceberg, he's also just an OG of disc golf UA-cam.
Totally! I've been playing since 2004, but as far as UA-cam, I'm a newbie!
Do your thing, it's appreciated!
Thank you! I appreciate all the great feedback we're getting. So much more to come my friend!
Great video and content!! Keep up the great work ❤
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! We've got so much more coming. Stay tuned...
I wish I could throw anything lightweight and it actually stays in the air. Really confused how you did that haha
I went into this review thinking this disc was going to be an immediate roller. Some people will demand a very specific weight. However, I think at least 10 grams is an amount where you start to see/feel a difference. The light-weight meant it flipped easily, but it also faded faster as it lost speed quicker.
Please please please don’t let the secret out on GStar Leopard3s probably top 5 best US fairways.
At that weight it should float.
I wish I had of tried that!!! I passed it along to a friend whose son is using it now!
Great video! I'm subscribing and looking forward to more!! 👍 Feel free to respond to any of mine. You have permission to use clips! 😊
Awesome! We'll check out your channel. Thanks!
Hi bro 👊
Hey! 👊
Iceberg is clickbait
🤣 I feel like the “138g Mamba” part was the clickbait! It was a video I wouldn’t have made had I not seen Iceberg’s vid! And he loved it so much I had to see try it myself!
Hell yeah dude. New sub
Thanks for the sub! Appreciate it so much.
Goes to show how unpredictable innova’s flight numbers are.
I also think the lightweight meant it lost speed faster and ended up fading out, which was what IcebergTV said on his channel as well.
138 gram gstar mamba 😂. A 250' roller disc 😂. The ultimate disc for extremely slow arm speeds....
