Thank you x1000! I recently bounced from another DAW to Studio One for this exact feature but was having a rough time finding a good tutorial on it. Yours has everything I needed to know and I greatly appreciate the tips!
Mike - great video as always. I've been using the Sound Variations since an hour after update launch on an orchestral project and you are absolutely right about the benefits of this. Due to the 'tree structure' of some keyswitching (we have discussed before) this is something orchestral composers have been requesting for a while and they have done a fantastic job at Presonus on this. Just being able to begin at any point in the piece with the correct instrumental articulations is a massive improvement for a start! I personally have the added bonus of being a VSL user, so due to a special 'partnership' this now auto populates for every orchestral instrument 😁👍 This will save hours of time progamming each sound. I have never been so happy with an update on any piece of software 👌
Something PreSonus could add: in addition to activation sequences, they could have de-activation sequences. In your example, that would let you replace "Double On" and "Double Off" with just "Double". If you set that to Momentary so it appears as a separate lane in the Sound Variations track, you could swipe over a section of notes and say "Doubling here", and it would turn the feature on and off at the right points in the music.
But it has one issue, imagine you're switching DAWs for a project for some reason and you want to send the midi info on the other DAW, it'll not be able to read the keyswitch information. Any idea how can we tackle this situation?
I was a great Cubase lover in the 80's, with an ATARI ST and a Sound Canvas. But i restarted making music about a year ago, and i got completely lost in it. Was it me, or was it Cubase? I don't know, but then my son offered me a Presonus Studio 24C unit, and i tried Studio One, it got me caught! And indeed, i also agree with Jack, whatshisname Creative Sauce's explanations are the clearest i ever got! Hats off (or open? ;-) ) Love the program, i got away with it quickly and already rearranged some of my old songs, and they sound lots better!!
you absolutely covered everything shocked at the fact that one can program what normally would be pressing two midi notes into one variation after trying to remake this a couple of times, also with ample guitar, as soon as i add the changing capo variations (i don't mean adding them to the sequence, literally adding them to the menu of variations as shown here), B2 becomes the lowest note i can play, regardless of capo position i choose. as soon as i remove them from the menu and keep only sustained, palm mute, etc, all notes play. how can this be? i made sure to follow everything as explained here - set lower input note (c-2), activation sequence is correct and it is set to momentary
Hello Mike. Because of you, I've switched to Studio one 5 recently. Also, I bought AmpleSound 3 M Guitar 2 days ago. But... I have problems with the AGM3 Guitar App. So I purchased a Tutorial but it was not practical. I need to know how to use the virtual instrument in StudioOne DAW for my songwriting and arranging hobby. Unfortunately, the course I purchased is great for learning about effects, etc, but not the nitty-gritty. How do I make the Strummer play more than one chord in sequence? The course only shows clicking on the chord number manually etc. etc. If you could produce a very basic, how to use AGM3 with DAW it would be great for me and probably for others too - surely I'm not the only dumbbell trying to master the programs? You have really helped me to understand Studio One better than anything I've ever seen out there. So thank you for that!!! :)
Great video, Thank you...one question..If you set up and save your keyswitches, do they work for all other v.instruments ? by that I mean, will other instruments....especially most third party ones....all have the same functions on the same keys....or will one have to set up different sets for each instrument. Probably a daft question, but I'm a bit new to all this, and find your videos definately the most helpfull.....clear, concise and very well explained
As per your demo related to Capo, the notes assigned will be muted for note input. For example C#1 | E1, E1 can't be used for note input. How to solve it? Thanks.
I know this is off subject of this video..but did you ever do a follow-up on the icon controller for studio one I recently bought one and built a new PC and haven't even got around to hooking it up yet smh.. I just don't see a lot of info out here on these unit's..anyway thanks and stay safe..!
Hey Mike loving the videos. I have been using Ableton with my Keylab essential 88, a Presonus 24c and all the free programs you get with them. I have been looking at the Presonus Sphere package and I am considering subscribing to it so I can upgrade from SO 4 to 5.2 and get the goodies to fiddle with. I am trying to dig around to see what other packages the other companies offer and it would be good if you could do a comparison video of what is available out there. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE could you do an idiots guide to how to manage and install the various packages (Ableton, Studio One, Kontact and so on. take it they have to be installed on your main drive) but how to manage all the samples you get with them so they could be stored on a second drive to not bog down the main drive! Oh and by the way........your contact email is down on your Creative Sauce site! Cheers buddy!
Excuse me if this is kind of a dumb question but how do you turn them off? I see the colored bar under the key switches that tells me there's an articulation active on that bar but how do I turn it off? I'm talking with midi and not with a keyboard as well.
Not sure if this is in your wheelhouse but I'm curious about using sound variation or mpe to slide 808 or bass notes or just individual notes like in bitwig studio.
When you set Capo 0 to C#1/E1 or Capo 1 to C#1/F1 etc. you can't play E1, F1 as note on your keyboard anymore. You will hear no sound. It works in your example, because your notes are higher than E1, F1.
Hi Mike, when I add a key switch note (for instance, a F#0 would be a key switch note for slap bass for Modo Bass 2) then it changes the variation for the complete track. So not just for the notes that I want to be slapped bass. What am I doing wrong here?
Which do you prefer Mike, the Articulation maps in CbB or this version? They seem pretty much identical in effect but the cakewalk version seems a bit more "techie" and this one a bit more user friendly
How about importing automatically and not manually setting up the key-switching in every musical library? So much easier and less time for us.How can we propose that in Presonus?Thank you so much!
I cant figure out how to load my keyswitches from presonus 5. I'm sure they didnt remove the load and save, cos that would be bizare, so I cant work this out at all. :/
Mike, well done on explaining and demonstrating this important new feature. reading the manual was not nearly as well presented as your video, particularly the activation sequence. thanks
great video! could you please please tell us how to just record in absolute time, so that the tracks don't jump around (and go out of sync with the video) every time I make a slight tempo change earlier in the piece??

See you there!
You're not just a good musician, Mike, you're also a highly effective teacher. I learn something useful every time I watch one of your videos. Cheers!
You explain new features better then Presonus themselves.
You are very kind Jack, thank you.
Agreed. Great work. I like experimenting with other DAWS but this feature keeps S1 as my go-to.
Thank you x1000! I recently bounced from another DAW to Studio One for this exact feature but was having a rough time finding a good tutorial on it. Yours has everything I needed to know and I greatly appreciate the tips!
Came here from your other video on key switches, as I was wondering why I could not see the KS tab. This video has saved my life!
From 15:38, how could you do that? I can't make more than just one lane in sound variation. I followed what you did, but didn't work.

Lol :)

Another of your videos that is teaching so clearly. Many thanks for that.
Wow. That made things 110 percent easier. Thanks for sharing Mike.

Thanks for the sub!
Awesome tutorial. Thanks Mike! Thanks PreSonus!
Excellent presentation! Seeing that you are using Ample Sound AGSC, any suggestions for that HANK MARVIN sound? Thanks
Lots of echo!
thanks a lot. A clear and comprehensive tutorial based on a simple example ... as usual I should say
those two arpeggiated chords at 16:50ish were just begging for somebody to start singing 'Psychic spies from China try to steal your mind's elation'
This is a really well-presented video and more in-depth than Presonus.
Sorry for the late post but are these articulations something that comes with the DAW or are they dependent on the VST sound?
As per your demo related to Capo, the notes assigned will be muted for note input. For example C#1 | E1, E1 can't be used for note input. How to solve it? Thanks.
Excellent explanation! Thanks a million!
Nicely done, Mate. Very informative indeed.

Good explaind ,do you see any big difference between S1 and Cakewalk in this case?
Can you have multiple variations at once?
Great video, many thanks!
LOVE YOUR VIDS!!!!
Which do you prefer Mike, the Articulation maps in CbB or this version? They seem pretty much identical in effect but the cakewalk version seems a bit more "techie" and this one a bit more user friendly
Hey I’m a Cakewalk user. You have your main program on the ssd, right? What parts do you have on the hdd and how did you map that for Cakewalk?
How much does the program cost?
how about a video with sugarbytes looperator with this concept?
Fantastic tutorial, thanks a lot !
May I ask what chair you're using? It seems perfect for guitar player.
Yes you are right, as the arms lift up :) I'm not sure now, but I bought it at Costco.
@@CreativeSauce I have a chair like that, the arms lift up!!! I haven't added it as a sound variation as of yet. :-)
very good tutorial very helpful thank you
Very good explanation, thank you
Great help, thanks!
My pleasure :)
How about importing automatically and not manually setting up the key-switching in every musical library? So much easier and less time for us.How can we propose that in Presonus?Thank you so much!
I think there have been some available, but I'm not sure of the exact location sorry :(
@@CreativeSauce I think it is Synchron Player by VSL but i dont know how to import them also.It is ok!Thanks anyway!
I cant figure out how to load my keyswitches from presonus 5. I'm sure they didnt remove the load and save, cos that would be bizare, so I cant work this out at all. :/
And the 4th problem is if you transpose the track, the keyswitches will move as well.
1:09 - why guitar player = 'his' ??
Because in his mind, it's a 'he'....just maybe, because he's a 'he'?? In yours and mine, it can be 'she'.
Could it do the double keyswitch :) ?
Yes!
@@CreativeSauce Haha A DAW can do anything if it wants to.
Mike,
well done on explaining and demonstrating this important new feature.
reading the manual was not nearly as well presented as your video, particularly the activation sequence.
thanks
Great again!
very helpful
Hi!
good video
great video! could you please please tell us how to just record in absolute time, so that the tracks don't jump around (and go out of sync with the video) every time I make a slight tempo change earlier in the piece??
if you sound variations Capo 5 C#1 | E 1 ,than you cant use E1 to play sound ,if you add more Capo ,all note you cant play...
is useless ...
I think you left out the ability to stack keyswitches.
Cakewalk made better.
Don't forget to leave a like & if you disliked this video, be sure to smash that dislike button twice 👍👍
(Pin this classic Mike comment maybe?) 👌
Sound variations are buggy as anything…
First!!
Congratulations!
