- The GIMVITATIONAL was a Summit-styled Smash Ultimate invitational hosted in Laurel Park, MD where 16 of some of the world's best players came together for a weekend of non-stop competition. This tournament marked the North American debut for some of Japan's up-and-comers, the Ryu main Asimo and the Steve prodigy Acola. Acola in particular has been making headlines these last few months as a new contender for best in the world, but how did he perform this weekend against some of NA's best? We'll tell you in this comprehensive recap of everything that went down at the event!

Ever since Kola vs Elegant, I've looked up to Kola. He battled his true nemesis, a man who uses anger and tilting against his enemies.
I look at Elegant like Byakuya Kuichiki. Stoic, angry looking mother fucker, seems to look down on his foes. Disrespectful, and seemingly untouchable because he literally uses cyclone bullshit.
Then comes Kola looking like Ichigo. Literally this guy who just gung-ho his way to victory with a sword. Just sheer brute force, but I'll say it right now, when Kola is mad, absolutely pissed, he plays like number 1. Shining bright for everyone.
I'll always remember Kola vs Elegant. The match when Kola battled his natural enemy and won, when Elegant met the one guy whose resolve just wouldn't die no matter how long and drawn out the battle got. He let out a battle cry when he won the set. I felt it in my bones!
Meanwhile, the last Japanese major had a Yoshi-Bowser grand finals...
Bowser is hype tho (comparative to other characters like Mii Gunner)
They know something we don’t
and was missing a lot of their top players because they were busy in NA winning our majors

Sure the characters are problematic, but honestly it’s more of an issue of NA players not being ready for Japanese players who know the game more than them. Sounds brutal, but that’s my take.

Same happened with pyra mythra after sparg0 destroyed top players at ultimate summit last summer. Once a character is ""out of nowhere"" successful he will automatically be the new scapegoat everyone on Twitter and twitch chat will complain about for the next few months

The GRIMVITATIONAL was so fun to watch. It wasn't much about the games but just about a bunch of dudes having fun
The Yonni sketch bit genuinely got me, too. Those are normally awful but I thought that was funny

Asimo was my favorite player to watch this tournament. The way he capitalizes on mistakes is ridiculous.

The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Steve at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The Rock Paper Scissors metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches. Humanity has reached its pinnacle. The low tier peasants are living in poverty. It seems nothing can stop the great leader of 20XX, Acola and his army, the Minecraft Monks who live in great monasteries where they levitate while TASing Steve with one hand, and winning tournaments with the other. The tournament metagame has gotten to this point where everything is played out to theoretical perfection, so tournament goers play Rock Paper Scissors for port priority, and that’s the game.
The leaders of the anti-20XX movement aim to keep 20XX from coming. These warriors include Light, Marss, Mkleo, Kola, and Spargo. They are all fighting to keep the apocalypse at bay, the craftpocalypse. But their efforts are futile. Their silly Jokers, Diddys, Pythras, Palus, Roys, and Clouds are no match for Steve, the only viable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate For the Nintendo Switch. Try as you will, but 20XX is coming. Or maybe, it’s already here.

bit of an error at 5:40. Tweek's Diddy didn't lose every game, it actually took a game from riddles Kazuya very solidly (which is why he went Terry). So it is 1-3 not 0-4. Not a huge difference but it makes it sound like the Diddy did nothing for him.
They were pretty much saying he got duked on when using him but good catch man he did win 1

No "he's just carried" will ever justify his results. He's mad good with the character and deserves the placement
Agreed. Still hate watching the character and wish he wasn't added to the game, but better for players to try and find workarounds instead of banning, like some people are talking about.
@@NathanRW I'm so damn happy he was added. I find Steve to be the exact kind of character I like. Someone who can both camp and Rushdown aggressively. Only real reason I like Samus, Shiek and Diddy in the past. Do I think he should've been nerfed, for sure, but I think the fact he's probably the most accurate is why he's so broken, it was inevitable he would've broken the game in some way.
Yes, very much. Acola is freaking skilled and an insanely good player -But bringing a gun to a knife fight and winning with it because of good accuracy doesn't mean you're not being carried by your tool. Steve's framedata is insane, because of his wonky unique jump doing stuff like footstool dair oos is MADLY easy, go ahead, go and do it on the training room -also that tnt downsmash airdodge combo is disgusting and something that's a clearly a mistake, an overlook like diddy's infinite and now that we won't ever get more patches makes it even worse. The ability to put a wall and mine forcing your opponent to approach is plainly disgusting because steve has some of the best antiaierial tools in the game and denies the need to play neutral most of the time

Yeah but fuck Steve, my boy Hero doesn't have a forward air, back air, or grab, they gave Sephiroth balloon weight. Yet they gave this Low Poly ass Character a projectile command grab, and -4 ground moves. Shake my head...
What I find funny about the Gimvitational was the aftermath with the Ban Steve please thing that Light, Marss, Cosmos, etc did to farm interactions and troll the community. Acola and the Japanese players even joined in on it. Taro, the photographer that accompanied the Japanese players, posted a really funny photo with Acola and someone holding Ban Steve/Kazuya
I know the whole thing spawned a bunch of controversy on Reddit and Twitter, but Watch made a thread basically stating that everyone treated Acola well and are looking forward to seeing him at more events as friends and rivals. Acola himself was also very happy. All in all this thing was so dumb to be hilarious
TLDR: Smash players are bunch of goofballs who are good at farming interactions on social media, and the Smash players are really chill and like each other.
They were trolling about it but the timing was very disrespectful. Also light was the only person that was very serious about banning Steve
@@okayperson3041 Eh, If Acola joined on the joke and neither him or Watch never raised any issues then this really strikes me as a non issues. Like Watch or Gimr would have told Light and Co to delete the tweets and apologize if they thought it was rude/bullying.

Light is actually wanting to ban steve on voids stream and think the character is gonna ruin the game.

Ever time people talk about Marss’ performances he just reminds me more and more of Gohan. Struggling at first then doing amazing, then falling off a bit then coming back only being stronger. No hate to Marss, he is definitely my favorite player and I love seeing him play

@@yankees2864 that’s because they’re all young and just getting into the competitive scene not purely because they’re getting carried. Someone like DDee was very good before even playing Steve when he was using PT but he doesn’t travel. That’s why he only went to MomoCon

Does that mean wolf carries people? What about ChunkyKong having good results with DK? Does DK carry people? It's such a stupid argument. Every top player was a nobody when they first got attention
@@myoblivion420 He just listed five separate majors (assuming he forgot Genesis 8) where unknown players get top 8 or top 16 with these characters after previoulsy not even getting close. Yes the character is literally carrying these people to the top, hopefully people either figure him out or we get another captain zack bayonetta EVO.

People want Steve banned because one kid is using him to win majors. ONE KID! The top players haven't even fought Acola with real Steve counterplay. Have you seen how many easy kills Acola got because people kept on dropping shield (LIGHT) or running under Steve's Dair? Nobody even tries to edge guard this guy properly, either. He gets away with a lot of things he can be punished for. I also found out that if you parry Steve's Bair or Fair, you can freely hit him with a frame 13 attack or something faster, and those moves are 2 of Steve's best. Parries and edge guards are the way to go. Force Steve to start grabbing more because the grab is slow and predictable; you can punish it easily. I've already preached about reflectors being great, too.
This is gonna be EXACTLY like the Pythra situation where a ton of them came out of nowhere and started winning and hogging top spots, but then die off quickly because top players actually learned the match-up.

Steve should not be banned and Kazuya should not even be in the conversation of being banned lmao. Currently the Steve meta is improving faster than people can learn to counter him, but once this meta slows down a bit players will only get better at beating Steve. Kazuya isn't even top 5 in the game so idk why people are trying to ban him.

A CRUCIAL detail I noticed this weekend that adds even more hype to あcola's masterclass of Steve... Light's Losers run before Grand Finals included THE best showing anyone had against Steve all weekend, absolutely dismantling and bullying Yonni's Steve in a quick 3-0. Despite this, あcola still looked fairly comfortable in GF, not letting Light snatch his bread from him like he did to Yonni.

Acola feels so invincible it's insane, even compared to other invincible players. When Light says he's going to do something he does it but Acola defied even that, that's probably the most shocking thing to me. Incredibly happy for him, as a Steve main I was cheering him and Yonni on the entire way.

While I don’t think that either of these characters should be banned Steve definitely does require most of the cast of characters to play an entire different game that no other character can replicate since the moment Steve places blocks down the opponent has to figure out a way to get by and stop steve from getting his materials and that is easier said then done due to Steve having really good frame data and combos while always putting the opponent in a disadvantage stage just by forcing them to approach

I've always wanted to go to a in person tournament. I think I harbor the skills to at the very least be noted but that's just time, money and a lack of knowledge on how to even enter that I just don't have. For now I suppose I'll just stick to anything local.

Wow almost a full week passed since the Gimvitational and no one has done anything about the Steve/Kazuya ban. It’s almost as if this topic wasn’t a big deal to begin with and just came and went like every other stupid fad this community sensationalizes!
Every time I hear the best in the world, I'm a little skeptical because it's very clear that not everyone in the world goes to these major tournaments that primarily take place in North America.
i think the idea was that if he’s looking like #1 in Japan and then wins a stacked NA tournament then he could very well be in contention for best in the world
You need experience in order to become the best, so if you're not facing the best even in whatever country you're from, you won't stand a chance. And we DO know the best players in each country/continent, and those actually do come to North America whether they're Japanese, French, Brazilian or Australian. In other words: There are no unknown players that could pop up out of nowhere and be a top 10 in the world.

My jaw dropped when the video said that spargos never gotten 6th place or lower since 2020 which is a 2 year gap of being in the top 5 and kola the 7th best player put him in 7th at losers bracket.

I love how basically everyone in the top 10 can be put in any position from 10th to 2nd in the pgr and there’s no true underdog in sets where two top 10 players face each other, except for mkleo obviously
Acola's worst placing so far has been 2nd place in any tournament. Safe to say he will be 2nd place minimum rather than 3rd-10th.

If 4 Bayo and Brawl MK didn't get banned, Steve definitely shouldn't. I don't think the problem with Steve is that he's OP. In my opinion, he's just extremely boring to watch.
We shouldnt make the same mistake we made in the past. MK and Bayo should have absolutely been banned in the past, Steve and maybe Kazuya should be now.

Until either of these characters start sweeping every tournament there is zero argument to banning them. One kid wins this tournament and all of a sudden everybody is outraged. I can't stand Steve but good lord some of y'all sound like absolute babies.
