  • Let's talk about sewing machines - vintage vs. modern models. Vintage sewing machines are known to be durable workhorses, while modern sewing machines often have more features like auto thread cutters, needle threaders, endless stitches, and more.
Don't forget to vote in this week's poll question: 'Do you prefer vintage or modern sewing machines?'
I own both and there are pros and cons...

I just purchased a floor (at a discounted price) Brother project runway limited edition nq550prw in December as a early christmas/birthday present for myself/reward for working so hard gift! I have loved figuring out all of its features and have so many more to learn. Plus the sewing store where I purchased it offers a free 2 hour class to show you how your specific machine works!!! 😃 As far as your question about what topics to discuss.. I would like to talk about what type of thread is out there, what kind of needles to use, and how people are recycling empty plastic spools.

Ooohhh great Christmas/early B-Day gift!!! Thank you for the show suggestions - that's a good thought about how to upcycle all our empty thread spools!

I have many machines but my vintage straight stitch only machines are my favorites. I am a quilter and my Singer Featherweight and Singer 15-91 sew the most perfect straight stitch! I also have a Janome Memory craft 4000 a Janome Jem Gold a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0 a Janome Coverstitch Pro (that I've never used) and a White Serger - oh and another vintage Singer that needs repairs and I can't remember the #. Oh and a longarm Handiquilter Avante. I'd love another vintage machine - A Singer 301 or 401.

Had some missing audio off the top of this show - I am editing out that portion so you don't have to go through 3 minutes to get to the real start of the live stream. New viewers - be sure to check out the chat box on the screen for the great insight on vintage and modern sewing machines!

I have a brother dreamweaver, which I love, but is a big baby for layers. I have a singer 201-2. Love it. She sews through many layers. I ahve not tried vinyl or pleather yet. I am looking at the jukis... Id like to get the mini industrial and the 1181, cuz I love making bags and you need a tough machine for those.

I own a cheap Brother (that is dying slowly) as my main machine. I was also gifted a couple of older, mechanical machines: A Singer and an Elna (identical to the one my mother bought mid-80s but hardly used). I also have two newer Brothers, a serger and a coverstitch. I resist computerized machines because I live in a dirty city and a third-world country with chronic energy problems. Less circuits, fewer problems to solve, IMO. BUT one innovation I find myself in love with is Adjustable Needle Position. The two older machines only do 3 needle positions (L, C, R) but I love being able to put my needle *exactly* where I want it. All this to say, I am considering buying a used but recent mechanical machine if I find one on my next trip to the US or Canada where I have family. The only other feature I am covet would be Automatic Buttonhole, especially the keyhole buttonhole on computerized machines!!!

Appreciate you sharing your own thoughts on sewing machines! Needle position really is a great feature to have, as well as automatic buttonholes.

So interesting that my vintage Kenmore 158.903 sews better than my Juki Excite. I also own the last
Kenmore sewing machine made, which is computerized, though it has a smaller throat. When I make
smaller quilts, it sews better than my Juki Excite, which has a bigger throat.. My vintage Kenmore
sews denim and lighter weight leather extremely well. I would love to have a Singer 201-2, 403 or 503.

Hey! I’m glad I found your channel! Fast forward current we are talking about the situation with Joann! I’m searching to find more info on the Eversewn brand. I’m a little worried they may be being phased out! Anyone have anymore info on this company?? They seem to be perfect for our lifestyle!

Your singer is beautiful. I prefer the older machines because they withstand the end of time. The machines they make now a days with the plastic covers are not attractive and I'd be afraid I drop the machine and pieces would fall off.

I have two vintage (40s) sewing machines. One is a White and one is Singer. I have ALL the accessories for both. I have found no negatives to either machine. They are both heavy duty and very versatile. The White is especially good with the ruffler foot when you want an evenly spaced ruffle. Several years ago, I did break down and purchase a new computerized Singer Embroidery/Sewing machine. Paid a lot of money for it. It does sew good but prefer my vintage machines for the feel of sewing and quality of finished product. It is great for embroidering. The new machine, however, is a piece of junk...all plastic and everything is very flimsy. I am often afraid when adjusting, changing feet, etc. that the little pieces of plastic are going to break. I much prefer my vintage machines...they lasted this this long and I expect they will outlast the new Singer. By the way, I missed the vote but consider myself an intermediate sewer. I am really enjoying your videos and video quality, for me at least, is very good. Thank you.

I definitely prefer modern machines to vintage. The more automated functions it has, the better. I have a Bernina Activa 125 which is 14 years old and still going strong but I would love to upgrade to a Bernina 880......when I've saved up :-)

When getting a machine be honest with yourself what you are going to use it for. I am 4th generation seamstress and my grandmother loved Singer but that was Singer of old days. My mom is all about Bernina 1130 fan (btw...Eversewn is owned by Bernina. Look up the Bernina go and sew 8. I believe it is the Eversewn Sparrow 25). I am a Baby Lock lover and have 2 sewing and 1 serger. I went to get a portable Baby Lock (like a Rachel) and found out they were made by Jamone and I do not like Jamone at all (but that is me). So, I am leaning towards the Sparrow 20.
BTW Singer sold the company back in the 80's I believe and they have not been the same quality since.

It seems like many sewing vloggers/bloggers are brand ambassadors for various brands like Baby Lock. While I have worked with some brands, I am not an exclusive partner with any of them and feel there are solid models with most manufacturers.

Highly recommend test driving a machine before you buy it and take time to really look at the results. I bought a modern Brother machine for it's one push button hole. Comparing the quality of the stitch of my close to 40 year old fully manual Janome and doing manual button holes.... The older machine out performs the newer one, better spaced stitches, the button hole is very pro looking. The newer machine stitches are not as neat and the button hole stitch is fat and amateurish. Disappointed. The older machine is higher and easy to see what's happening with the needle area. The newer one is lower and it's too difficult to see where the needle is starting with the button hole attachment.

dang! I missed the live show again! Anyway.... I just sold a vintage featherweight so that I could buy a brother pq1500sl. I would never ever pay more than 1000 for a machine unless I was using it for a business. I'm surprised how many machine snobs are out there.
