- THE MAIDENS LIGHTHOUSES NORTH CHANNEL CO. ANTRIM NORTHERN IRELAND
The Maidens lighthouses, on the Maidens in North Channel off County Antrim in Northern Ireland, date from 1829 and were built at the request of merchants and a Royal Navy officer. Lighthouses were built on both rocks; the West Maiden was abandoned in 1903 and the East Maiden was automated in 1977.
After receiving requests from Larne merchants and Admiral Benjamin Hallowell Carew for a lighthouse to be placed on The Maidens, George Halpin, the Ballast Board's Inspector of Works and Inspector of Lighthouses, inspected the rocks in 1819. He recommended the placement of two lighthouses. The plans were approved in 1824 and Halpin designed the lighthouses and supervised their construction. Building was completed and the lights switched on by 5 January 1829. The towers were 800 yards apart: the West Tower, on the northern rock, rose 84 feet above sea level and could be seen 13 miles away; the East Tower, on the southern rock, reached 94 feet and was visible from a distance of 14 miles.The keepers of the lighthouses and their families originally lived on site for the whole year. In one case, this led to romance when, in the 1830s, the Assistant Keeper of one lighthouse fell in love with daughter of the keeper of the other, often visiting her by boat; after the families fell out and her father forbade them to meet, they eloped to Carrickfergus on the mainland.
Abandonment of West Tower An extra light, to illuminate the Highland Rocks, was built into a window in the East Tower in 1889.However, the Engineer to the Commissioners of Irish Lights, William Douglass, in December 1898 recommended the establishment of a lightvessel north of the Highland Rocks. It would house a more powerful light and a fog siren, and coupled with increasing the light and addition of a siren to the East Tower would allow the abandonment of the West Tower. This plan, and a further suggestion in 1899, of a light being built on the Highland Rocks came to nothing.[3] However, the light on the East Tower was improved and put into operation on 12 March 1903; the West Tower was abandoned. The solitary working lighthouse was now known as Maidens.[3] The buildings of the old West Tower are still standing; the lighthouse remains intact and the internal stairs and external walkway to the living quarters can still be used. However, the living quarters have decayed into a ruined state.The structures can be seen from the shore.
In 1906, the Maiden was combined with the operation of Ferris Point lighthouse, under the supervision of the Ferris Point keeper. New accommodation for four Assistant Keepers was built at Ferris Point; three assistants now worked on the Maidens at any one time, serving 30 days at the lighthouse followed by 10 days with their family at Ferris Point, when he also assisted the Principal Keeper. The Principal Keeper was also responsible for inspecting the Maidens.However, in 1951, the Maidens was separated from Ferris Point, and once more had its own Principal Keeper.[Early in the 1970s, the Commissioners of Irish Lights began a modernisation programme, with the intention of automating the Maidens and passing control to Ferris Point. The accommodation at Ferris Point was demolished and additional Keepers were added to improve the ratio of days spent working at the lighthouse.
By October 1977, an electric light was added to the lighthouse and by 31 October of that year, the Keepers were withdrawn as the Maidens became an automatic operation.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my subscribers and everybody who has watched and commented on of my videos I really appreciate your support and your kind comments it makes all worthwhile. i cannot thank you enough. I started flying drones just over a year and a half ago and I have a keen passion for capturing aerial footage with my drone ( DJI Mavic 2 zoom ) some of the locations i film include old castles and ruins, historic buildings and monuments, scenery and places of interest here in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and posting them on UA-cam for people to enjoy. I would like to say to anybody who subscribes or leaves a comment on my channel I will get back to you as soon as possible , to show my support for your channels and content. I also like to thank the people who i have come to know personally who have supported me right from the start and are still with me I really can't thank you enough for supporting the channel on the level of encouragement and feedback that you have show me. I hope to continue this hobby and past time legislation permitting which is due here in the UK in the next few months. As a lot of you know there's been a lot of negativity around drones and where they should and shouldn't fly, unfortunately in any thing in life you will get people who will use things in the wrong way but that shouldn't spoil it for the people who try to do the right thing and be sensible. I hope the few don't spoil it for the many who do enjoy the hobby. There is a lot of people out there of pure talent in flying drones and capturing some wonderful scenes and moments in life to enjoy on UA-cam and other platforms. Thankyou again for all your support.

hi i used to have my 6 weeks school holidays in the 1960s at my uncles house on Drains Bay where my mother used to live, every day looking out to the Maidens, my uncle Hugh McKay used to keep his boats in the boat house at the end of the video. In later years we went out to the Maidens fishing we had a great day with some very large Pollock. Thanks for an Amazing video bringing tears to my eyes of great memories

Thank you so much for your kind comments and feedback I was too focused on the islands ahead and didn't realise the distance I had travelled it was only when I turn the drone around and looked back to the shoreline then I realised I could've went too far if the wind has picked up a major struggle even more to make it back my first and last range test especially over water the reason I done it I just wanted to see how far I could push the drone and capture something at the same time . Lessons learned I know what this drone is capable of and I now have more of an understanding of the parameters of flight.

No boat A lot of lessons learned in the flight and might take a look at the floats that you can buy for underneath your drone at least then if it had run out of battery I could land it on top of the water and then get someone in a boat to get it retrieved cheers

Awesome flight, made me nervous just watching that, flying over water i find super stressful, even with RTH etc it would only take a single prop to fail to ruin the day.

ORGANIZED CoNfUsioN thankyou so much for your kind comments and support I got too focused on reaching the islands with the drone it’s very deceiving the distance it’s only when you get out there and turn your drone for home that you realise how far you have travelled first and last range test especially over water never again lol

Thank you so much for your kind comments and feedback I was too focused on the islands ahead and didn't realise the distance I had travelled it was only when I turned the drone around and looked back to the shoreline then I realised I could've went too far but glad i made it back lesson learned

17% is getting down there and it could have been ugly had there been a strong head wind on the return home. Thankfully there was not a "DroneBum" episode here! When the video first started I was thinking that was quite the Trek! Nice work as always and a very informative story about the LightHouses!

Bet your nerves were shot after that close call! Glad you got the footage and your drone back safely! I was on the edge of my seat when you were on the return! I wouldn’t have the balls to go that far lol. 😉
