The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department shot and killed about 250 captive whitetail deer to manage spread of a contagious deer disease called chronic wasting disease (CWD). Robert Williams, a deer breeder and owner of RW Trophy Ranch, has spent years fighting the state’s order, even as the department reported more and more CWD cases on the ranch. But the killing of his herd, on May 28, 2024, was an ending of sorts.
