Spare a thought for the space station model from 2001: A Space Odyssey which was found in a field in England but was subsequently destroyed by mindless vandals before anybody could salvage it.
Wow! Just found this site. I worked on this production set during my summer holidays. My uncle worked at Bray Studios and got me work with the Alien production team model building and sfx painting. I actually worked on The Nostromo and many other models featured. Bins full of Airfix model kits broken open and Chloroformed into place. Lighting installation and defuser spray paint effects. Happiest days of my youth.
Now that it's been found and rebuilt, it should be preserved for all time, somewhere in a museum... Nostromo was / is one of the most important space ship designs in history!! IMHO Thank God for Grant and team!!
This is not a restoration, this is archeology !! Thank you for putting time and effort into this, I will think of you guys next rescreening of Alien I can go and take my son to...
This is film is such a work of art, absolutely amazing. Also, the fact that Jerry Goldsmith's absoltely amazingly beautiful, haunting and lullaby like kind of score is such a juxtaposition to the horrific and traumatazing events of the film, I mean, this film is one of a kind.
Even though this wonderful model sat outside for so long, it's refreshing to see modelers who love the art so much to take this weather beaten model and restore it! My second most beloved movie of all-time, Alien has a look and feel that even today stands up and is totally believable. The Nostromo's design will always be one of those that simply got it "right"! Not flashy. Not sleek. But completely functional and industrial. That front-on landing sequence is truly one of cinema's greatest looking shots! I LOVE it!
I remember seeing this restored model at the Prop Store in Valencia, CA. I knew someone who worked there and received a special tour. I had plenty of time to walk around the model and look into the crevices, engines, etc. What a treat after seeing Alien in Hollywood the week it came out. I've been in awe ever since!
The design and look of this film is still unmatched. It's amazing to think that it was achieved over 40 years ago. THANK YOU for saving this precious piece of movie history.
Fun fact: The Nostormo was originally going to painted yellow, and in fact was, because so much industrial machinery (earth-movers, bulldozers, etc) are yellow. But Scott changed his mind and ordered that the ship be re-painted in greys. I read where when these guys first got hold of what was left of the model, there was still yellow paint visible on parts of it (you can still see some of it in the "before" images in this video).
the ship at the beginning of the movie is the nostromo, the really big thing you see is king of like an oil refinery in space, the nostromo is like a tug boat. so in the movie it detaches from the refinery and goes down to the surface. hope that helps you :)
You guys deserve recognition and gratitude for restoring one Hollywood's iconic sci-fi films props. I was surprised this prop was left out in the weather to rot.
I was lucky to see The Nostromo in real life about two yrs ago in LA and it's huge when you see it for real..Will never forget the experience,Thanks Alex x
It's amazing how stupid studios are. They want all the money they can get yet, time & again things like this happen. The original death star had been used as a trash can for years until a fan aquired and restored it. If the studios don't want their old stuff, they could sell it and make a few extra bucks.
Part of the space station from "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) was also found in such a state, as well as the time machine from "The Time Machine" (1960).
Kubrick destroyed nearly all of the 2001 models and props, lest the studio reuse them in lesser productions. I believe only the spherical moon lander still remains, on display in a movie museum in LA.
sad the Nostromo got left in the rain after all it gave to audiences. it's part of cinema history & deserves the love & attention these talented guys are putting into this Nostromo belongs in a museum
I just want to say this is an old video but I still appreciate Prop store doing videos to show the fans details they want to know about the actual prop some of us are trying to replicate. Indiana Jones would be proud.
Absolutely stunning work. The amount of detail is just incredible. Bravo to you all for doing such an amazing job. Thank you for saving this ship and restoring such a detailed and intricate model.
Congratulations guys on an excellent job well done - the restoration of the Nostromos was fantastic - its a priceless model and movies like that come about once in a century if ever - Riddley Scott should never have attempted an Alien prequel as the original was made in his prime and the culture, talent and thinking of that era are no longer
I can only assume that a corporation let it sit out in the weather for 20 years. It doesn't make sense that any fan-buyer would treat a special piece of memorabilia like crap. Thank goodness someone found it. KUDOS to those working so hard to restore it
Freakin' amazing! You guys deserve a medal or knighthood or at the very least a case of beer! I am so glad you have restored a piece of science fiction history. Ron Cobb must be looking down from heaven pleased as punch!
A greedy suggestion.....how about an accurate 3D scan of that awesome piece of work? In case someone was inclined to reproduce it in a smaller form. Awesome work guys.
Who the hell disliked this video!? Crazy people! I found it fascinating. That music is haunting too. They’ll never beat this film for the visuals, the atmosphere & the perfection of the Alien. RIP Bolaji & H.R.
Simply amazing work chaps, sad to see the model treated s badly in the first place but then its just a means to an end in the industry. So glad Lucas kept all the original models for future generations. Im a model builder myself and would live to get a go at doing this
I hope one day some magnificent soul will use these restored props in movies. Really dont like the CGI ships we got in Prometheus and Covenant(landing craft was pretty cool though). Nostromo is by far my favorite space ship of all time. It looks so damn good and industrial.
Hey Jack! So you saved me a second time.First was the superhuman favor you did me on Iron Thunder. Now it's saving my favorite studio miniature ever! I am fortunate to have known you and experienced your talent first hand.
Awesome work from those guys!! What made me sad is the fact that this awesome prop stayed exposed to the elements for 20 years!! Who let that happenned???!
How does something like a prop model for a film as successful as Alien just get left out in the rain for 20 years? It seems like someone would have just taken it home. I know I would have done it had I been passing by such a cool model just left to rot.
What an Idiot must it be, leaving this unique piece of movie history outside and exposed to the weather.... Such a shame..and thanks to all the experienced propmakers, to bring it back to its original state... THX from Germany
AMAZING!! Thanks you so much for sharing and congratulations to both the restoration team and the video production people who created this. I think that it was really well done. Cheers 😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
God bless everyone who worked on the restoration of this beauty, you're all incredibly talented and skilled!! But what kind of monsters left the model out in the elements for years to rot away??? That's an unforgivable crime.
Uh no its not this is the Nostromo. The Narcissus was the smaller triangular ship that ejects from the Nostromo which Ripley escapes in at the end of the movie.
That, ladies and gentlemen, was still real art in the film industry. Building sets, making models out of everything you could find. All of today's computer-animated films simply lack that certain something. when you think of the old Star Trek films or Godzilla. It was always a shame about the models that were blown up, but it looked far more realistic than some of the compact nonsense of today.
A horrendous crime to even CONSIDER leaving it outdoors... quite unbelievable. Very pleased it was rescued, but clearly it is still well short of it's former glory.
It's a cryin' shame the Nostromo prop was left in the weather for two decades, but at least it stayed (mostly) in one piece. Studios used to tear apart models after filming was completed and repurpose them for other movies.
The issue I have with the Nostromo is the ship here was nothing more than a landing vehicle that was PART of the Nostromo. When Ripley flies away in the Narcissus, the Nostromo looks like a massive floating refinery because it takes her almost 15-20 seconds of full-thrust to fly from the rear underneath before it explodes. This ship here is but a fraction of that refineries size.
Alien is the perfect example of what happens when an amazing script meets an amazing director, amazing special effects and amazing acting.
It is outrageous to know that this magnificent model stayed outside in the weather, unloved for 20 years!!!
Criminal truly
A marvelous model.
The best star ship ever
Spare a thought for the space station model from 2001: A Space Odyssey which was found in a field in England but was subsequently destroyed by mindless vandals before anybody could salvage it.
I agree 1000%
@Markus Andrew, you’re right. A real shame:

That needs to be in a museum that’s absolutely beautiful!
Wow, that would be insanely meticulous, with those hull panels. Amazing work, and to my mind, one of the most interesting ships ever put to film.
Such a beautiful and classic ship model, tragic that it sat outside for 20 years, but it looks great again! Well done.
I too can't believe it wasn't loved and cherished a huge slap on the back for saving what is the most iconic spacecraft to ever grace our screens
Was Lucky to see the finished Nostromo for real last year and believe me it's huge when you see it in real life
really glad there's guys out there like you to keep this art alive! Great work
That is beautiful, though it saddens me that such stunning model sat outside for 20+ years. I wonder how many others have been lost to time...

Yes, it is. The Nostromo was the tug in the video above. Behind it was the refinery section.

Amazing work, a true part of movie history.
Its a crime they let that thing sit outside...
I agree I would have taken it home. Is it stealing if they abandoned it just to rot?
What happened to the space station from 2001: A Space odyssey was worse. It sat outside even longer and is barely a frame.
Same with the original Death Star. I heard that got rescued and restored, however.
I'll ask this again. Is it stealing or immoral if they're just letting it sit outside and rot?
@@UncleFeedle Yes, heard it was used as a waste paper basket for a time. Horrendous!
