I think talent is like ABV in wine. It's only 15% or so but without it you won't have wine. Sometimes you can't help but feel sorry for those kids who are willing to put in all the 80%, but just a bit short on the 20%, and then frustrated at those that may have the 20% but we never really know because they never put in the 80%.
I agree, although in certain situations (where you know the opponent is far superior, and a heavy loss is expected), it's a little easier to be good natured about it. That said, Winston seems like a super nice guy, and I'm glad that his videos seem to be bringing him some success (he got all that Solinco stuff, right?)
Very enjoyable to watch. Despite the scoreline, Winston, you really played very well and held your own. I like Niels' attitude: very level-headed and mature, not cocky despite his high level and talent.
With my 8 year old son taking lessons and watching videos on this channel it inspired me to start taking lessons again after 20 years. Had my first one today and conditioning is an issue lol. Great content!
This was a great match, I was pulling for you Winston in the Duce game, I was impressed by Neils game, both of you guys played great tennis and it was fun to watch.
Great video. He also had a terrific, consistent half-volley drop shot that he used over and over when you drew him in. Good court sense, knowing where you were and what shot would give you the most trouble.
Awesome match. Very entertaining. Almost clinched that game, Winston. Grat effort. Neils has a great personality. Wish him the best in his college tennis career and on.
Winston you held up well against Niels' constant pressure. Really good effort. Neils has all the tools! His forehand goes stratospheric when he decides to let it go. Great variety, patience, and perfect technique. Niels made tennis look easy but we all know it is not. Seems like a genuine nice guy with a killer game!
Winston your footwork has improved a lot....especially the quick steps preparing to hit the ball. There's a lot less lunging. Well done. When I play someone drastically better than me I just rip the ball on returns and go for big serves. You just cannot win games if you let them get into points. Once the rally starts you're dead.
Great match, both you guys. First, Neils, out there with nothing to gain, and even winning 8-1 would have been a total loss-- obviously, there's a reason you're doing so well. And Winston-- Man, that guy hits hard. And you almost gutted one out-- a real achievement just coming that close. And, as always, super entertaining. And interesting to actually see the difference between two players who look pretty close in isolation.
Winston, you played great, particularly given the level of Niels! Maybe the best I have seen you play! You mostly handled his pace! Very impressive! That 4th game could have gone either way! As for Niels, the only weird thing I saw was he hit every lob short! Maybe just an off-day for lobs for him??
You do a great job with the questions at the end. Sometimes the opponent won't go too deep in the answers but your questions are still great. thanks for the content once again
Great stuff Winston! I think a fun match would be you versus Niels’ dad. Who my HS played against back in the later 80s. And trust me - you will see where Niels gets his wicked forehand!
Halfway through the video so far but paused to comment that your serve is looking really improved in this match, Winston. Specially your serve out wide on the duece side looks like it's got good pace and slice on it.
yes making some decent serves that day but i feel you could go more in front with the toss - seems like you are jammed. Try tossing in a way you can lean more into the court naturally and you can hit more in front - i have a feeling it should give you more power and margin as well and could maybe also be a quick fix. Try aiming first in a dry run without the ball just to see where the ball hitting zone for the toss may be - anyways good stuff - keep it up!@@WinstonDu
Winston you're defo getting better!! Im coming back next week from injury after 3 months out, been watching all your videos. Thank you, really inspiring and motivational...cant wait to get back on court and put in practice what I've been learning here. 😊👍🏽
Great match! Niels was really effective at keeping his shots deep and penetrating and he stepped into every ball you hit at him. You played well considering that he took time away from you and often put you in a spot that was difficult to setup a good return. When you had time to set up, your shots looked really good. I'm sure there was a lot of mental pressure during the match. I was rooting for you when you guys got into that long deuce shoot out! :) Love your content!
Really good match, love the Q&A, very informative. Brutal result but lots of great points and really shows how good you have to be to join a big D1 school. His shots and movement were scary good. Good luck next season Neils.
Great video Winston, good to see Niels again, very high level from both of you. Solid serving Winston. My coach keeps telling me to keep both feet on the ground and push through the ball, sometimes especially on backhand I move backwards. I think Niels’ balls came at u really fast and sometimes it pushed you back which might give less accuracy / power as you were saying that pressure to hit deep is easier if u move forward
You may or may not be aware but rewatch ur split steps when receiving. For example at 9:29, you are split stepping multiple times, which actually causes you to get aced. You do a second split step and the balls already by you. Focus on one split step at the point of contact. I know it is good to be light on your toes, but when facing fast servers like Niels, mistiming your split step can cause delayed reactions like this one. One split step that allows you to spring towards the direction of the serve is better.
If only Niels could develop some power and weight to his shots and serve…😊. Fun court time for him and thanks for featuring this Winston. Cheers fellas.
Honestly despite the score, I feel like you played at a very high lvl Winston! Your shots looked more fluid, aggressive, and confident, and decisive. Great job man!
Niels' serve is quick! The only way to win a point is hope he makes an unforced error. Winston you played very well that 4th game with all those deuces.
Winston, I've been following your channel for a while now and you've shown some huge improvement especially on your serve recently! I thought you held your own on some of the rallies with Niels and that says a lot given the gap in level. You asked some great questions as well, very informative. Thanks so much for sharing and keep up the awesome content!
Dude the point you played at 4:42 speaks volumes for this level of talent. I feel like you did everything right and you still lost the point. I would have just given up at that point. Crazy.
His touch on the forehand slice looked really nice. I wonder if he mixes shots like that in all the time, or if he was doing it here because he had more freedom to try stuff.
I don’t think Winston hit more than 5 shots off his front foot lol - pace from Niels is so much higher! Very big of you Winston to focus on showcasing the talent at your own expense!
It's more than 20% talent.. In high school, my brother and I played and the best kid on the team one year was a surfer named Ryan who was just a natural athlete and tennis came easy to him. He didn't even practice often but the kid was a great player. He ended up not staying on the team the next year due to lack of interest.
Insightful questions and interesting match…. Yes 150 is pretty light if he is over 6 ft. He may get pushed around a little in college but he’s got a rocket forehand and I thought his serve was good . Winston needs to work on both 1st and second serves…
I think natural talent is the biggest in serving. Arm talent is a real thing. Like in baseball, hard work won’t get you to throw 95mph. If it did, a lot more guys would be pitchers in the big leagues.
I think it is when you try to hit 140 mph serves, like equiv to 95+ fastball, but getting to 120 is technique and strength, but not so much talent is needed.
Everybody can serve 120. If you leanred young and have the mechanics down, basically everybody can serve 120-125. Now, obviously, if you learned tennis as an adult and is not the best coordinated person, you won't be serving like that.
Great playing, Winston. Given his UTR rating, I would have been a little surprised if you had taken a game, and you nearly held serve in that monster-long service game. You would handily beat me 8-0, so I’m not trying to give you a hard time, just keeping it real.
Fun to watch. Winston doesn’t have any weapons and easily outclassed. The kid has an okay serve for college, but all you need to beat Winston. Big difference is His court movement was far superior beyond just the strokes.
Winstun, what do you feel is the hardest thing to overcome when you play someone of that level? i.e. what are they doing so well in particular that makes them a higher level?
I don't think the score line tells an accurate picture of how well you were playing. Tough opponent and you held your own in a bunch of rallies. I didn't count, but I think you only had the one double fault towards the end? And you got some free points early on your serve. Great work. Keep grinding.
Agreed, for me I think some higher level of eye hand coordination is a must, some people just don't have that.
yep, height, reactions for serve, ball feelings, eye hand coordination, are all talents.
@@nking99t You can develop all of those things except the first one lol
@@evannatteford1784 yep but very very hard to develop
@@evannatteford1784 yep but it will be so hard to develop though, like the reaction for serve, it is more of the brain.
winston's sportsmanship is admirable. Not getting a game in and still being positive is great to see. Niels killed it
I agree, although in certain situations (where you know the opponent is far superior, and a heavy loss is expected), it's a little easier to be good natured about it. Very enjoyable to watch. Despite the scoreline, Winston, you really played very well and held your own. I like Niels' attitude: very level-headed and mature, not cocky despite his high level and talent.
Yeah, seems like a down to earth and nice kid. Hope he does well.
Good match! Niels is a great player. Winston hit some great shots this match, some really good backhands.
I loved the twist you threw in by asking those great questions in the beginning of the video. Really interesting responses. Please keep doing this!
With my 8 year old son taking lessons and watching videos on this channel it inspired me to start taking lessons again after 20 years. Had my first one today and conditioning is an issue lol. Great content!
Love to hear that!
Cool to hear how much work goes into becoming a high level D1 recruit!!
What a great kid and a player.
This was a great match, I was pulling for you Winston in the Duce game, I was impressed by Neils game, both of you guys played great tennis and it was fun to watch.

Winston your channel has becone one of the best. The quality of play is outstanding.-Thanks for sharing
Great job Winston! Excellent 4th game!! Niels seems like a legitimately nice young man. Blessings!
Yeah, maybe he was looking for a weakness in Niels' game to try and work with, but I didn't see any!
Great Match. Love watching you kep improving Winston! Niels serve is NASTY!!! Great points - keep up the great work!
Wow Winston. Nice job. Looks like you are really growing as a player. Thanks for the videos.
Wow. Very impressive. He can generate a lot of power on the ball for somebody so slim, whose body is obviously still developing.
Sinner-like.
Good stuff Winston. One difference I notice is the ability to go on the offensive happens sooner with the D1 player on average. Nice video!
Great match, both you guys. First, Neils, out there with nothing to gain, and even winning 8-1 would have been a total loss-- obviously, there's a reason you're doing so well. And Winston-- Man, that guy hits hard. And you almost gutted one out-- a real achievement just coming that close.

You made some good shots and you made him work hard. He's good enough to take advantage of his good shots and serves.
Niels is amazing! Hope he continues to improve
Niels level is crazy. So strong in the back, fast movement and very good serve!
Wow, Winston, Niels brought out the best in you! Despite the scoreboard, this is possibly the highest level I've seen you play at. Well done!
Just stumbled onto your channel. Great stuff! Thank you for the content!
Great stuff Winston! I think a fun match would be you versus Niels’ dad. Who my HS played against back in the later 80s. And trust me - you will see where Niels gets his wicked forehand!

Kids a beast, I'm sure he will make it to pro level, he seems to have the talent, drive and dedication to succeed.
The editing was as good as the match!
Both great players! This was fun to watch, keep it coming man!
Really good match, love the Q&A, very informative. Brutal result but lots of great points and really shows how good you have to be to join a big D1 school. His shots and movement were scary good. Good luck next season Neils.
I'm a USTA 4.5 and serve just like Niels...in my mind! Winston, you seem to have improved a lot in the last year or so. Nice playing!
Nice match. There were some really good rallies there. I felt like Winston's level started to rise to the occasion.
I like the interview, thanks for that!
seemed like a real down to Earth kid, hope he does well at USC!
This is always interesting to compare levels of tennis.
Great video Winston, good to see Niels again, very high level from both of you. Solid serving Winston. winston returning might ve been a little shaky today but i really see the footwork and urgency improvement

Turtle Rock, Irvine, CA. My dad lives 300 steps from that court. Great place.....
Great stuff 👍
Great video. I thought you did fairly well against a top college player. Bravo !
Beatdown lol. Niels is a beast
If only Niels could develop some power and weight to his shots and serve…😊. Fun court time for him and thanks for featuring this Winston. Cheers fellas.
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard!!!!
Honestly despite the score, I feel like you played at a very high lvl Winston! Your shots looked more fluid, aggressive, and confident, and decisive. Great job man!
Hope Niels enjoys SC
Holy smokes, good match still regardless of the score! 🎉
Niels has such a beautiful forehand stroke
this kid is better than a lot of the college guys you play
Playing against guys like Niels in high school is the reason I quit tennis. These kids just have so much skills.
no reason to quit if you like tennis :(
no reason to quit if you like tennis :(
gotta work on that second serve. It's wild to see how explosive even the 2nd serve from Niels is. His forehand is disgusting, winner from anywhere.
Hi winston ur channel is goated

been working on the serve!
do you attribute it to the help from Ryan Reidy?@@WinstonDu
I can’t wait to read about Niels when he is ranked in the top ten on the ATP.
Dang your serves got a lot better!
great content. It would be really cool to see Niels playing Sayles - I believe they are close in level?
Kid is a beast!
This is a great example of what a top D1 player does against weaker competition
Dude the point you played at 4:42 speaks volumes for this level of talent. I feel like you did everything right and you still lost the point. I would have just given up at that point. Crazy.
Fight on!
Two things he does really well, early preparation and tremendous racquet face control, hardly ever saw the ball sail on him. Solid player!
His touch on the forehand slice looked really nice. I wonder if he mixes shots like that in all the time, or if he was doing it here because he had more freedom to try stuff.
Fun fact ,Niels is ranked 106 in the world actually based on junior utr rankings
Niels is great... now he has to go play prime Govind in college.
I don’t think Winston hit more than 5 shots off his front foot lol - pace from Niels is so much higher!
Very big of you Winston to focus on showcasing the talent at your own expense!
Good stuff dub d
Wow that guy has a sick name

he is so good and maybe only playing at half tank
You done well winston
Don’t talk down to yourself as a 4.5 USTA is above average, good job guys!
how about Neils vs Karue?
coming soon?
No shame in being bagled by Niels. That ball was coming at you with serious pace.
His speed at 7:11 is insane.
Did Neils YEET that last point? hahaha! Kids these days.
You gotta put baby Fritz vs baby Tsitsipas
Winston with another banger!
Great playing, Winston. Given his UTR rating, I would have been a little surprised if you had taken a game, and you nearly held serve in that monster-long service game. You would handily beat me 8-0, so I’m not trying to give you a hard time, just keeping it real.
Weighs enough to whoop some ass 8-0 while messing around. Kid is impressive
So we got 4-5 years until we see him playing on tour
That's enough time to see Winston improve on his serve!
May I ask what camera equipment you used? It looks great. Wide angle.
What a big donuts
Hey Winston how many hours should I dedicate to each skill. For example should I practice serves for 1 hour
does Niels play with a forehand continental grip? looks like it
I don't think the score line tells an accurate picture of how well you were playing. Tough opponent and you held your own in a bunch of rallies. I didn't count, but I think you only had the one double fault towards the end? And you got some free points early on your serve. Great work. Keep grinding.
beat down
4.5 is definitely not your average rec level player
He took it easy on you Winston.... Practice on hitting your ball deep to be more on offense. You got it.
Hi Winston, can you please play again against Hermont?
Liking the new kicks! How are you liking the Diadora Flys? I’ve been curious to try these. Did you have to go up a half size?
Not bad they look a bit like basketball shoes. Think they're the same size as my asics but feel bigger
Niels bakery is open 😆🥯🥯
