I think this is my favorite Miku song because she has so much fun with it. This is a good reminder that the maid part of their act isn’t just the outfits. They call their concerts servings, and they embody a spirit of service, like they’re there to show the crowd a good time, and they put their all into it, as a show of respect. It’s why they don’t do encores, because if they had the energy to play another, they’d just do it standard. You can miss a lot of this just reacting to songs from here and there, rather than watching a whole concert. The music is great, but they also put on a great show, and they’re funny, even when they’re struggling to communicate in English.
Miku: Let's clap together to welcome the members to the stage. Kobato (Miku) will clap with you. Please join in! Kuruppo, start! (Mincho came but avoided Miku) 1:20 (Miku) Wait a minute. I don't understand, but A-chan is eating a banana. Is it good? (A-chan) It tastes good! (Miku) Good to know. 1:29 (Miku) MISA! MISA is as usual. Your whiskey good? She is drinking whiskey straight from the bottle as usual. 1:39 (MISA) It's almost empty. (Miku) Oh, it's almost empty! Emergency call! We need whiskey for MISA right away! 1:52 (Miku) Let's have fun! Rock In Me!
And that right there is why they are so loved, they treat the crowd like their friends and just have fun, rock kinda went to h-ll in the 90s' and 2000s', the artist would stand and stare at their shoes while they played, walk off collect their checks and go home, B.M. doesnt go for that, they are so tight and know each other so well they can goof around and not miss a beat, they want to have a good time "with us". Excellent reaction as usual Sohum 🤘🤘
Akane (not Mincho) eats bananas because, you know, gorilla. Miku is adored by Maidiacs for her MCs because she never leaves the stage, and has no intention of leaving the stage (she loves interacting with the masters and princesses), which also means all the other Maids get to have a break. Equally, all Maidiacs love Miku's songs (where she is the lead vocal) and "Rock in Me" is her classic song (the one where she is a rock star lead singer of a rock band - her dream). Older Maidiacs still pine for the days when Band-Maid songs had dual vocals: sharing verses, rapid-fire call and response, and *extensive* harmonising. "Freezer" springs easily to mind. I saw Band-Maid live for the two recent Zepp Tokyo shows (25th and 26th Nov) and there will never be a better reason to learn Japanese than to understand what the Maids are joking about on stage. Of course, all of their live songs are indivivdual parts of an extensive and intensive show (I like to think of it as a carefully constructed aural tapestry) that the Maids spend hours serving to us. So it is important to remember that the official live songs - or any live Band-Maid song - is not an isolated, individual performance. This is why, if you really love Band-Maid, you will see them live at least once in your life.
I have read comments from new fans asking why they keep Miku. That she doesnt add a lot to the band. If you are one of the people that think that way please understand that there would be no Band Maid if it wasn't for our little pigeon. This was her dream and she worked very hard to make it happen. For all the talent and charm of the other members Miku is the most important maid. PO!
Preach...Miku is the heart and soul of the band. Her vision and drive made Band-Maid what it is today. From the concept. To finding Kanami. Writing majority of the lyrics once management allowed them to write their own songs. And although they say they don't have a leader, they have been on camera saying "Senpai" and acknowledging her a such. Which is a title of honor. That being said, I believe she would be the first to admit, the band would not have been as successful had the stars not been aligned and all of the members, an extremely talented group of young women, fell into place. With a masterful find of Kanami, came Akane, with the perfect timing of her job ending. Akane having been friends with Kanami and did the drum work for Kanami on her demos. With Akane, came MISA, as they were friends and attended the same Music school...TSM (Tokyo School of Music). And MISA's band had just broken up. Then in a act of selflessness, Miku gave up her position of lead vocals as they felt it was not right for the direction of music she envisioned. With the help of the talent agency...Saiki came aboard. And when it came time to expand their sound....she volunteered to learn to play the guitar to cover the rhythm guitar roll. The rest is history...and we owe it all to Miku...our Little Pigeon's vision. Rock On Little Pigeon. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
It's kind of funny because, although it's not advertised, Miku is the boss of the group. Miku is the manager, the promoter, she does all the negotiations, she manages the finances - both the group's and the girls' personal finances. She looks cute, but she has a mind like a computer. She's a professional poker player, participating in tournaments and winning prizes. That means she reads people like a book.
The concerts are managed to give Saiki's voice a break which can include a section with a Miku song and Instrumental, MC breaks and a section with slow and mid tempo songs. Saiki had Vocal chord surgery to remove polyps in 2017 so they are very careful with her pecious asset.
As mentioned in another comment, Saiki had throat polyp surgery in 2017. The Ohrenje documentary talks about this. She probably is ice packing her throat backstage. I understand she sips on loquat syrup during concerts. She had a vocal coach, familiar with the surgery and post-surgery care. The imaginary time breaks with Miku, and the instrumentals, are ways that the band accommodates Saiki, allowing her to pace herself, and maintain that beautiful voice.
My favorite Miku song just because of her energy and interaction with the Masters and Princesses. Kanami's backing vocals is a bonus and like the little noodling both Kanami and MISA do. Not a overly complicated song...but fun as heck...especially when you're at the Okyu-ji pumping your fist to the "Hey! Hey!". "Sayonakidori" is also amazing. I hope you do both the live electric and then the acoustic version. Miku is amazing! Full of life and infectious energy. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
In this concert, I think it was around 2018, Saiki-san is only on 1 year recovery from vocal cord polyps removal surgery. So, she rests midset and Miku-chan sings, do her "Magic Spell Time" (Comedy Act) and the 4-piece would play an Instrumental. So, from that beginning, they do this now for every concert.
Remember, just a couple weeks after Saiki had her polyp surgery, Miku had nodes removed from her vocal chords. Less serious surgery, but it was done to minimize interruptions to their rehearsal schedule.
Yes, she is a rock star and nobody deserves it more than her. My favorite Miku song, because it makes me happy every time. Followed now closely by "Brightest star".
There is an awesome fan cam version of this from the Paradise Rock Club in Boston 2022 from a Vladimir Chupin's YT channel that shows a bit more fan interaction in a very small venue. Also shows how even with a cell phone recording they sound amazing.
Miku was taking singing lesson while working in a Maid Cafe. Like the singing style of her grandmother Miku was inspired by traditional Japanese Enka singing.
@jjo154 "I must try my best" Jeff. And a Merry Christmas to you too, my friend. Memo to BAND-MAID : Launch your own Christmas Maid decorations & i can put you on my tree :)
You missed the Comedy Intro for this. She started with a recorded backing track and then they cut it off on her and she went nuts! It's very funny! But it's really hard to find the whole thing these days, but the first part is in Ohrenje's documentaries on Miku. It's number 2 or 3. You're right about their LIVE Sound. In fact you could use them to test PAs and Sound Reinforcement Equipment in general. If there's so much as a single speaker that isn't up to snuff you will know it very quickly. No Saiki. This song was kind of known as Saiki's Bathroom Break. But that was before we knew about her throat problems and surgery. But sometimes there's no Miku, like when Saiki and Kanami fo the acoustic version of 'Puzzle'.
Saiki had throat surgery around this time, so they had to be very careful with her voice. They build in rest breaks for her through instrumentals, MC time and Miku led songs. While they do sound awesome lice, there was some post production done here due to this being on an official live DVD.
You can tell her vocal has gotten stronger since then (I suppose it's from zepp tokyo 2018). Actually both Miku and Saiki's vocal have gotten significantly powerful over the last couple of years. You should definitely react to "Brightest Star" (album ver.) it's in my opinion is the most vocally complex song by Miku and I absolutely love it. Then you can react to The One, for ultimate harmony made in heaven. I really don't think Saiki needs any break these days other than MC time, but when Saiki makes live setlists she makes sure to include what fans want. 1. Miku, the heart of Band-Maid, 2. Their instrumentals. It used to be partly for herself, but it's always for the band at the core. Band-Maid in the earlier days was more about the instruments than vocals. Saiki didn't get that much recognition until 2020. Imo both Miku and Saiki should be more recognised.
There is only one rock-star to compare with Miku...........................Miku! She excels at putting the fun into rock music,... similarly to AG putting fun into choreography..... never allowing ego to dull her natural brilliance..

Great reaction and I whole heartily agree with you on the raw vocals. I don't have the best ear (due to 40 years of listening to music too loud) but I can hear when Saiki or Miku sing out of tune and that for me seems to indicate that they are not playing around with the vocals in post (no pitch correcting). I watch the "Wings of Pegasus" channel and Fil has been on a campaign for years to expose the use of pitch correction in mainstream music production (he hates it). My hearing is not as good as Pil, but I feel it's good enough to tell that Band-Maid doesn't appear to be using it. Other Japanese bands that I listen to also do not appear to be using pitch correction and it may be that the Japanese want to leave the vocals as raw as possible (may be a culture thing - "Do your best" does not mean using tricks to make the vocals sound better). Thanks for reacting to Miku, the strongest pigeon in the world.
