This is the second talk I have thoroughly enjoyed from Paula. Her son is 100% spot on about kids. When they are well-loved, they turn out just fine. They don't know the poison of bigotry and hatred until WE adults give it to them.
This video is powerful and inspirational. They reminded me a word of Oscar Wilde "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." We may change this statement a little as "To love oneself and others as truly they are is the beginning of a lifelong romance."

Paula and her son are such an inspiration to me as a Christian transgender woman. I, too, felt the call to authenticity to be a sacred calling. In short, living an abundant life as God intended for all of us. This is a wonderful testimony that totally resonates with me!

Ok, first of all, I don't have anything against transgender people or the LGBT community in general, but I feel like TED is not the place for this kind of debates. First of all, it feels very forced, it screams "Everyone hates me. I'm a victim" and while I do empathise and feel like nobody should be ostracised for their sexuality, I also have to acknowledge that it does not contribute to society in a positive way, on the contrary. If you point out at every corner that you're transgender and complain about it, of course narrow-minded people are going to distance themselves from you. It's only when you treat your sexuality as a normal thing and don't broadcast it to the world that things take a turn for the better. Nothing wrong or abnormal with being trans; so don't act like it's abnormal.
It is abnormal in the sense that trans people are harassed and attacked due to their transexuality. Not to mention that the discrimination against them in general, e.g. Trump's ban of transexuals from serving in the military. As long as they are being treated as second class citizens, I think talks like this that show their humanity and struggles are very important. As far as TED not being an appropriate place for a talk like this, why? TED has always featured many different topics and isn't confined to one area. This channel really suffers from people complaining about LGBT, women or minorities featured, which is more telling of their own biases, prejudices and intolerance.
I actually think TED is a very good place for talks like these. To me this talk is not a debate, it is just presenting how the family was affected and dealt with changes. The transition itself is not being debated, it is more about understanding the struggles of others and accepting your family members.
Could you please give me some examples of places better than TED that would be more appropriate for this type of talk? the mission of TED is: "TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world." That's taken from their website. emphasis on "change attitudes" Transgender and Transexual people are discriminated just as much as they are supported, since the country is very divided. Even if most people look at these types of videos for 5 seconds before disliking and commenting "freak" these talks DO have the power to "change attitudes" even if it's a small amount of people.
To the people downvoting, what is so hard to understand? This is someone who is not afraid to be herself. She stands up & continues walking along as you throw your vile comments at them. How is this fair? What did they do to you? Nothing. & I think people want to pick someone different apart, because they feel they have some right about what is normal & not. They don't look like you, therefore they must be evil. That's not what society should be about, it's about DIVERSITY & accepting others on AND offline. Everybody has a right to be themselves, & when you walk by them & judge, its because you can't be that confident & happy, so you attack & say "mentally ill!" that reaction means something, something you've suppressed. you're just shouting at your own reflection. Not shouting at a person, you are shouting at yourself. So, stop hating yourself. And let people be, as you would in public.
What vile comments? Don't confuse disagreement with whatever you call vile. I expect that we have VERY different definitions of the word "vile", Malfoy. "what is so hard to understand?" Why do you assume that they don't? "someone who is not afraid to be" On the contrary, he has hated and rejected himself, so why is it surprising if society rejects him as well? "throw your vile comments" Why do you assume they will be able to read these comments and that the comments are directed at him? If anything, it appears that the comments are being purged from wrong think. "How is this fair?" Live isn't fair. If TED has the right to upload, we have the right to speak against perversion and societal degradation, or at least as much as anyone else who comments. "What did they do to you?" That is not the measure of our rights to speak freely. "pick someone different apart" As if we have never seen this before? Not at all, rather we are force fed this nonsense so much that people are VERY tired of it. "therefore they must be evil" That is a strawman. There are plenty of reasons to be against these anti-science beliefs that TED insists on uploading. "not what society should be about" You could hardly be more wrong. "Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society. " "it's about diversity" While you openly condemn diversity of thought. "accepting others" I accept they have a right to be whatever they want to be. They don't have a right to force others to call it normal and support such a self-destructive path. "its because you aren't confident and happy. something you have suppressed. stop hating yourself" There is no way for you to know that without being a mind reader. Not to mention that you are conveniently ignoring any other argument that they may offer.
That's what religious tribes do... nations behave similar way. Putin should get an award, or medal for his extraordinary influence on strengthening EU integration.
The worst part is that to the world, to stand in opposition to this is to stand in opposition to truth and love. But the reality is that to discerning believers, emotion has almost nothing to do with it. We too seek love and truth - can we not disagree with this and still show the person the same love?
I am a Christian young woman. What do you think Jesus would do if he met a transgender person, or anyone who is LGBTQIA? He would embrace them with love and kindness. Because that is what he did. He cared for those that society hated: tax collectors, lepers, the blind and the lame. You can't evangelize and antagonize at the same time. That isn't how Christianity works. Have you ever heard the hymn: "They will know we are Christians by our LOVE." We are to be known by LOVE NOT HATE.
@@elizabethlally2557 As a Christian speaking to a Christian, it's important to base assumptions on the Bible; especially when coming to conclusions about what Jesus would do.

Watched a video of him from some years ago as a man. He had no feminine tendencies at all. None. No standing with head down, shoulders tucked into her neck or feminine hand movements. And it wasn't like he was trying to hide them. He was very naturally a man. The dichotomy of the 2 was surprising. Most men who are gay seem to have at least some female tendencies. Paula didn't
Blooming Accents Hey! A couple important things to keep in mind: even when referring to a trans person in the past, it’s the respectful and correct thing to do to use their current pronouns; she/her should be use throughout this whole story. Also, at no point is gay or straight mentioned here. This talk is about gender, not sexuality; the two are separate and we have no idea what her sexuality is. That said, the observation is interesting! It makes sense to me that she would display traditionally masculine characteristics before her transition. She was socialized as a boy/man and was likely unable to show anything else because of her career.
For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will FOLLOW THEIR OWN DESIRES and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will REJECT the TRUTH and chase after myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 NLT “So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock-his church, purchased with his own blood -over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as leaders. I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock. Even some MEN FROM YOUR OWN GROUP will rise up and DISTORT the TRUTH in order to draw a following. Acts of the Apostles 20:28-30 NLT Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many FALSE PROPHETS in the world. Those people belong to this world, so they SPEAK from the WORLD'S VIEWPOINT and the WORLD listens to them. But WE BELONG TO GOD, and those who know God listen to us. If they DO NOT BELONG TO GOD THEY DO NOT LISTEN TO US. That is how we know if someone has the SPIRIT OF TRUTH or the spirit of deception. 1 John 4:1, 5-6 NLT

We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world." That's taken from their website. emphasis on "change attitudes"
Transgender and Transexual people are discriminated just as much as they are supported, since the country is very divided. Even if most people look at these types of videos for 5 seconds before disliking and commenting "freak" these talks DO have the power to "change attitudes" even if it's a small amount of people.
Very well said
@@MLC92 they aren't debating in the Ted talk but a debate always ensues and it's just not the place. I miss the old TED
"it's about diversity" While you openly condemn diversity of thought.
Thank you!!! Sad to see so much confusion, misunderstanding and hate. If only people would put themselves in others' shoes...
@@remyllebeau77 you're the only one in these comments making a rational and clear point.
That's what religious tribes do... nations behave similar way. Putin should get an award, or medal for his extraordinary influence on strengthening EU integration.
As a Christian, I respectfully disagree.
What is it ypu disabled with?
@@jeremysmagicvideos I did. Matthew 9:10-17; Mark 2:15-22; Luke 5:29-39. Also what is the greatest commandment? "The greatest of these is love. Love your neighbor like yourself." Have you never read the bible to not know that Jesus ate with tax collectors???
Great
this made me the most confused i’ve ever been lol
For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will FOLLOW THEIR OWN DESIRES and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will REJECT the TRUTH and chase after myths.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 NLT
“So guard yourselves and God’s people.
Acts of the Apostles 20:28-30 NLT
Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit.

Wow Ted really went downhill
Louis Cotteta Why?
obsession with gender and the attention surrounding going against chromosomes , is it the clothes. where is the renaissance .. how does this improve anything . I',m a mosquito like the old days .. ignore bad behavior and it usually goes away. best advise for feeling better go jogging . the stronger the body the stronger the mind . we have many weak minded poor souls . love your neighbor
If she's transgender, does she identified as female yet her none stop calls her dad?
