    • @benjotsumal6146
      @benjotsumal6146 7 років тому +260

      Maybe it's because of the ballet in the trailer. Who is he? He's different and that's why the music is different. But if you just hate hip hop in trailers in general then you're just ignorant. I only say that because a ton of people talk bad about hip hop even if the lyrics fit the trailer. They'll say something like they hate thug music and so on but the song isn't about that. They'd know if they'd actually listen. That's just my little rant on those people but the music is a good choice here.

    • @Rio_Yeti_
      @Rio_Yeti_ 7 років тому +500

      I like good, intelligent hip hop that isn't all about making money, doing drugs, and treating women like objects. I do think hip hop in trailers is overused and obnoxious, especially when it doesn't fit; Ben Hur comes to mind. It's original and refreshing to not hear hip hop music blaring during a trailer for a movie with a predominantly black cast. It goes against stereotype and that's what I dig.

    • @TRANZEURO
      @TRANZEURO 7 років тому +10

      I think that the 'DL Chronicles' should get a mention for being the first to use classical music as the soundtrack in a filmed black gay story in episode 'Boo'.That shows creators mention in the dvd commentary that they deliberately did not want to use hip hop as it would have been too stereotypical and cliche. In fact I'm wondering if the producers for 'Moonlight' were inspired by their approach ?

    • @solargeknowles4354

      There is hip-hop in the movie though, a part of the movie takes place in Miami during the 90's.

    People are doing a disservice to this film by saying its just a "black lgbt" film. It's much more than that. Not a heavy handed political film at all. It's just a brilliant film period.

      For some, calling it a "black lgbt" film is what they need, even though of course it is more than that, it is still a very important factor to certain people.

    • @SophieNeveudancer
      @SophieNeveudancer 7 років тому +2

      Honestly, I had read about it a long time ago, but had forgotten about the title of the movie. Now I saw the trailer and almost at the end of it I remembered it was also about lgbt. And by then, I was super interested already, it does seems like so much more than that, and now I really want to watch it, cause I hate how when a movie character is gay/lesbian, that is all, like, everything revolves around it and there is no depth beyond that. Seems about time.

    The adult Chiron is just an absolutely beautiful man. His quiet way, a man of few words but with so much churning just under the surface. Still waters ...
    Have watched the third act so many times, and each time, its nuanced reflections of loneliness, regrets, longings and second chances - the bond between the men so deep, enduring and undeniable - are profoundly human and moving. Just superlative. Even the way it won the Oscars made it even more unique and memorable. An exquisite piece of art. Thank you to all involved on its creation.

    Just watched this movie and it really was a masterpiece, it actually exceeded my expectations. It's really dissapointing to see how many people write it off as "political propaganda" or whatever just because its focuses on homosexuality in black communities. I think some people need to realize that what's shown in the movie is actual reality for a lot of people, it isnt just made up propaganda. And just because the story is about minorities doesn't mean people only like it for that reason, the film itself is very well done.

    As a straight person this movie moved me deeply, this story not just about a homosexual black persons journey through life, but more about being loved, as a person bullied throughout my adolescent youth and having a harsh home life it relates to me on a different level, the movie interprets about finding love and compassion where in most places are not found, where neglected and damaged souls are finally healed, about escaping a troubled past a finding comfort in a new pasture, this movie really immersed myself into Chirons reality because its relatable to a lot of people, it reflects longing, heartbreak, regret, and loneliness, its not a love story its a tragedy, this was very touching and needed movie of a Generation, also the soundtrack alone is just hypnotic and hits you with raw emotion, its one of those films that is forgotten but will be remembered

    The way Juan held Little on the water made me cry so hard! Being a fatherless gay man of color, living in abject poverty and sorting the hateful ways of the world alone is what I endured as a kid myself...and it shaped me as a man. While I made school my life and avoided getting lost in some dark corner of life (like many people I knew did) , I recognize I am extremely fortunate. I sobbed so hard at the end! Chiron was such a complex character and gave the gay experience a richness and complexity I can identify with. We are all the same regardless of color , culture or sexual orientation: we just want to be loved.

      And life is already sad enough, i don't need sad movies to make it sadder. I like to watch movie to forget for a while about real life.

    Best coming of age film of 2016. A story about a very specific demographic that is not typically portrayed in cinema and yet with universal themes anybody can relate to. Deconstructs masculinity and homophobia, tackles poverty and drug addiction, portrays the eternal struggle of being yourself vs who everybody expects you to be. Not just a love story.

      Yes, that's why I think it's a masterpiece of a film, it tackles a subject matter that is rarely discussed, yet is able to have several themes throughout where you can have the audience connected to it no matter who they are. It's a very dynamic film.

I keep finding myself in tears because I can’t stop thinking about how many young and older men that go through these similar experiences with discrimination, loneliness and those who bring hatred towards their sexuality. A deeply compelling trailer.
    The initial viewing of this trailer took my fucking breath away. I don't think I've seen anything like this--handled with such care--before in mainstream film. Finally what appears to be a central filmic narrative focusing on the harrowing sexual development of a beautiful dark skin black boy's journey into manhood. There are scenes that look brutal tough, because...well the subject matter is tough. Yet I'm hoping what we'll also see for this character in his journey, is the love and hard-won affirmation that is so desperately needed as powerful and redemptive representation for QPOC and black folks as a whole! (sigh) I'm really rooting for this, and can't wait to see it!

      +dolisha ferrell It's a wide reminder that people like you need to stop fucking closing your eyes and turning your heads to the things like this. Before you point your fingers make sure your hands are clean. I don't know who could ever love a person like you with so much hate and selfishness in their heart it must be a big weight to carry, when you become open minded you chill out a little but and stop becoming so goddamn uptight for christ's sake. If you opened your mind half as much as you opened your mouth, we'd all be in a better place.

    I'm a huge fan of the Oscar's. i expected nothing but this movie to win. Since i saw the trailer i wanted to watch it in that exact moment. It's poetic. They only invested 1.5 million on the entire movie. it didnt have millions of dollars on production. And yes, i was kind of mad when people started to complain about the fact that this movie won. They haven't even watched it yet, they don't know how AMAZING this film is. They are not used to see a winner that didnt have the super production, the pretty girl and the handsome boy. This is a powerful message above it all. This is a background of what Many people has and is suffering. This is pure art. And i couldnt be any more thankful to all of the people who make this amazing movie.

      If you're African american an you want an award have your black males put on a dress have your women act abusive have your men sexually confused have the black woman an man as slaves have the anchimama characteristics have the black woman angry have the black family torn apart and have the man of the home out of the picture have colorism in place ~ and that's how black movies obtain awards with these key components

    • @kennethhamlett166
      @kennethhamlett166 6 років тому +8

      I do not think the facts bear out your theory. One of the first movies about Black characters to win a lot of awards was "Sounder," about a poor farm family in which the parents struggled to try and make it possible for their children to have better lives than they had (that is a universal movie theme, regardless of race).
      The father spent some time away from the family, but they reunited in an emotional and glorious ending.
      The same year, "Lady Sings the Blues" portrayed the life of Billie Holliday andwhile it is true that Ms. Holliday's struggle with drugs that eventually toiok her life was a part of the story, nonee of the items on your list was depicted in the movie. Nevertheless, the film won many awards, primarily for Diana Ross' astoningly raw and real performance that literally ran the full range of the emotional scale from triump to tragedy. At this year's awards, one of the most nominated films was "Hidden Figures" -- its cast won the biggest Screen Actor's Guild award -- and it was a story of women of accomplishment, but it featured romances for its characters, families being supportive and functional and it did not really deal with sex or sexual orientation at all. Whoopie Goldberg won an Oscar for a wonderful comic performance in "Ghost" and her character did not fit any of your categories. Louis Gossett, Jr. won an Oscar for "An Officer and a Gentleman," in which he played an Army sergeant -- not fitting any of your categories. Sidney Poitier was the first Black actor to win the top award, and his rolre of a "just passing through" guy who helps a group of nuns build a church fits none of your items. Denzel Washtinton has won two Oscars and been nominated for seveal more, and he has never appeared in a role that matches your items. Jamie Foxx won many awards for "Ray," and it does not fit those categories, and neither do those won by Morgan Freeman, Fprest Whitaker, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Viola Davis, and on and on.
      I am not sure why you made the comment or who you had in mind. I have read comments from individuals that disliked "Moonlight" because it depicted a character's realization that he is gay and his coming to terms with it, but I do not believe that you were unhappy in that manner. It is true that in the history of the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, etc., many actors and actresses have won for performances in which they played particular types of dramatic roles. But, they have more to do with occupations than sexuality and addictions instead of family dysfunction. More remarkably, the actors who won awards playing prlostitutes, those with addictions, those with disabilities involve mostly white actors and actresses. The list of Black winners and nominees tend to involve characters that were heroic or gifted or dedicated and overcoming obstacles. So, I think you gave the wrong advice to young Black actors and actresses -- those are the roles that win them them awards. Before concluding, I wanted to say that I think "Moonlight" is one of the most beautiful, touching, real and artistically made films I have ever seen -- and I am 67 and have seen more movies than anyone could count. The acting was superb in every role, and the three individuals who shared the lead role were seemless and true to the character in ways I would not hve thought possible. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the movie to me was that all the roles were three dimensional and not stereotypes. Yes, Mahershala Ali was a drug dealer, but he was not like any drug dealer you have ever seen depicted in any other movie. Wonderful Naomie Harris played a crack addicted character, but she was far more than that. "Moonlight" was a movie that took place in the inner city with a Black cast, but it was not about guns, explosions, deaths and prison breaks. It was about real humans trying to deal iwith the lot they had been given. I did not think it had a chance to win Best Movie, but when "La La Land" was announced, I was very disappointed. When the error was announced and "Moonlight" declared the winner, this old fart had gotten out of bed and was standing in my bedroom applauding with tears in my eyes. The makers of the film deserved every bit of recognition they received.

      Call Recklezz you're a fool if you believe that. No where in the Bible does it say the world is 6000 years old first of all. Secondly a world without religion is the world you see today, wrought with hate and division. Religion is discipline. Most of the religious practices around the world reveal to the layman how nature and groups of people work as well as helping one understand where they fit in all this. Proper religious practice leads to inner peace. And if you thing Islam, Christianity, and Judaism are the only three religions in the world you're just as much an idiot as you sound
