  • When students in school, college or university do not speak in certain settings, despite talking freely in other situations, we cannot assume they are choosing not to speak or lack motivation to engage. How can we tell the difference between shyness, refusal or inability to speak? Are we handling their silence appropriately? The answers to these questions will make all the difference between facilitating participation, engagement and verbal interaction, and pushing the student deeper into withdrawal, isolation and avoidance.
This introductory talk by Maggie Johnson looks to share strategies and practical suggestions about how to support students in one of these educational settings. Maggie Johnson, FRCSLT, is a speech and language therapist advisor specialising in childhood communication disorders and selective mutism (an anxiety disorder). With over thirty years’ experience in education and community settings, Maggie supports adults who live with selective mutism and works closely with families and schools. She provides training and workshops across the UK and overseas and has appeared in several television documentaries about selective mutism.

Wow, what a great video, loaded with valuable information! I got to know Maggie and Alison through their wonderful book, The Selective Mutism Resource Manual. This book is my guide and savior throughout the years of my daughter's recovery from selective mutism. The book not only educates readers about SM, but also provides treatment plans and suggests activities for SM kids. My daughter's therapists and teachers have all benefited tremendously from this book. The 2nd Edition of The Selective Mutism Resource Manual is even better! I especially appreciate Part 5, Online Resource -- now parents can print the documents and share with teachers, friends and family members. Thank you, Maggie and Alison!
