On Wednesday I was at the salon in the midst of a windstorm in Cheyenne. Around 11 am, the windspeed was varying between 60-70 mph, but with gusts up to 80-90 mph. At one point, it was howling, the sound of it almost human. All work stopped as we listened to the screaming howl and watched the overhead lamp post outside bend and bounce. It was crazy scary. One lady said "God be with the truckers out there." And then everyone said the same thing. It was the kind of shared moment that happens so rarely. Unforgettable. So glad to know that you are safe and sound Mike! Please have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with your family and know that we appreciate what you do! For those who are not familiar with this area, Cheyenne sits at the nexus of two major interstates, I-80 and I-25, and we love our trucks cause we have lots and lots of them. At times, they are literally our lifeline to the rest of civilization. WY is basically a rural state, so trucks form our supply line about 90%, especially during the winter. The risks truckers take to keep that supply line going are priceless!
We get so windstorms hear in southern much less than that. A few trucks usually get blown over on the highway. When there are windstorms I see people in cars driving along side the trucks and just stay there. Truckers tell me that is the most dangerous place to be. Yet they get along side a truck and their brains turn to jelly and they just stay there. One place I don't want to be is passing a truck when there is a hill, we the truck passes the hill it will get slammed with the full force of the wind.
I had a same experience when I was working for Swift Transportation the time. The wind blew harder than 55mph while hauling a heavy load heading to Utah from Nebraska, my experience is that I drove during the hard wind blowing to unable to maintain on the same lane that, I'd suppose to be on because I didn't check the weather forecast but I didn't know it would be that be bad, it's was my first time in Nebraska and Wyoming at the time back in 2018/19. But drive safe.
FYI: As former OTR driver, when had a crosswind, would apply sailing wind dynamics to windows. Would lower window 1/4th inch on the side opposite the strong wind and the other 1/2 inch. Would help reduce the action on the fifth wheel and trailer would track in lane better. A sailor happened to explain to me that the wind did not move ship by filling the sail, but the low-pressure created was actually pulling sail trying to equalize the.pressure. Noisy but better than dancing all over lane.
As u usually have your defrost cranked and windows cracked anyway in these conditions! Interesting. I suppose every little bit helps. Dunno if I'd do it in this rain? Does it really help hold a lane? I'd think you'd need to open more window to even remotely effect aerodynamics
To Grow the Farm Up., the semi was a KW T600 and as soon as I cracked the 2nd window the cab would center-up in front of the 53ft trailer, would once again have equal vision out of west coast mirrors. Used listen to weather channel on I80 westbound to.hear wind speeds along the interstate system. 50 mph winds was the max for crosswinds. Lady 80 lb 70 yr old who tried to average 3500 to 5000 miles per week. Had to retire earllyt at 73 and sell truck because of side effect of a prescription.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. I WENT WITH MY HUBBY FOR YEARS WHEN HE WAS TRUCKING. HE PASSED SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND NOW MY SON IS A DRIVER. SAW SO MUCH OF THIS COUNTRY THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD AND YOUR VIDEOS BRING BACK SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE.
Wow I'm so glad you made it through that storm safe. I just wanted to thank all you truck drivers once again for what you do. I live in Salt Lake and work at the post office and When that storm hit us last week it dumped a foot of snow overnight and four of our trucks didn't show up through the night so when we got to work at 6:30 there wasn't much to do. It just proves once again you guys move this country. My highest regards to you 🙂
My son is 26 and has been a truck driver for 3 years now. The closest I got to riding shotgun with him was hours on the phone with him overnight. I'm so glad you have this channel Mike- thanks👍
I know exactly where you're traveling, been on thar road many times. My dad and my brother were both truck drivers for many years, and I have tremendous respect for you guys. Thank you for all you do to keep supply lines open. I'm glad you're safe. God bless you
That was a heck of a ride. Glad you made that in one piece. The storms you were talking about hit close to home. One tornado was 8 miles from my home that was an EF4 that went all the way to Kentucky. That one missed my sister about 10 miles. It hit Mayfield, KY. We had another EF2 that hit 9 miles away at Truman, AR that was coming my way but broke up when it hit the St. Francis River. All my family in both states are fine. May the Lord continue to keep you safe.
That was quite some Derecho storm. I was thinking about you and all the other truckers and those on the road as we had 90-100 mph winds here in Colorado Springs. There were several semis that got blown over on I-25 near Monument and closed the highway for a while. Prayers for your safe travels as always. Glad you made it safely yesterday!
WHO, could be so FOOLISH to drive north, or south on I-25 with those high velocity winds blowing in . . .from the west. Either . . . inexperienced or foolish, or, inexorably BOTH ! 💀 😬 😝
It was a crazy storm, I live in MN and on 12/10/21 we were getting a foot of snow while Kentucky was being hit by that ef4. Five days later we got a derecho that spawned a lot of tornadoes.
Love your video brings back memories I use to run back and forth from Denver to Kansas city and to Salt Lake city and Santa fe NM and Albuquerque every night whole foods it's no joke out there in the winter.i know what its like out there did it 25 years am local now down here in Texas love it don't miss that out there stay safe drivers
Frkn scarry drive - no I would never do this myself. Thanks for taking the wheel while I sit safe at home and super glad you are safe through this storm.
Mike thanks for taking me along on your trips I appreciate it so much you are my number one channel I watch on UA-cam and I appreciate what you do hope you and your family have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year and continue to be safe out there brother and I'm hoping to ride many more miles with you bless you brother.
I had a feeling you had to drive in that crazy storm! Glad to see you made it though unscathed, (the mirror doesn't count!) What an adventure! Thanks for letting us ride shotgun!
You meant Carthage Missouri... they have a cool precious moment place there. Glad you are safe 🙏.. thank you for risking everything to supply our nation 🙏 ❤ 🙌
Ran through a storm looked just like that a year ago near St. Louis MO......the wind was strong enough it blew over 15 trucks and clogged up the highway, both lanes....wind sheers are hard to predict and the hail was 1/2 in in diameter and smaller...lots of dented autos and trucks... a couple of the semi drivers were hurt pretty bad.. quite common in MO, OK, & IL ....TX sees its share too
THANK YOU for talking to us. I have learned so much from you. The things you talk about the wind can apply to anyone driving a car to. When i watch your videos i feel like i"m riding with you and get to see a lot of country. Thanks again. Ginger
I'm not a trucker, but ran across your video. It shows the weather and hazards you have to contend with on a daily basis while the rest of us are working safely in an office or at home. Thanks for an informative video.
Thanks MMM. Just heard of a bad crash in Utah, Grand county. We were concerned it might have been you.. head on collision two truckers won't be coming home. Our hearts go out to their families. Central California Watching
We smelled the smoke from that brush fire in Kansas all the way in chicago. Crazy storms. God bless all those effected. Stay safe and Merry Christmas!! Dee
Hey Mike !! According to what was posted on highway construction was that they put a 2% grade on the crown of the roads for water drainage off to the side of the road so that states that the road would drop off 2 ft in 100 ft. of road surface !! Have a good ride & ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!
That was a very nasty storm here in Kansas City so I can only imagine it was worse out west. At one point Manhattan, KS had 79mph winds and the storm was moving east at almost 80mph. One of the reasons they had the road shut down I heard was for a huge wildfire out there behind the storm. Hope you made it through safely and always good to see your videos. Thanks for letting us ride along. ✌️
I've been here - Interstate 70 in BOTH states (Kansas AND Colorado - basically between the Kansas Cities and the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado) can be nasty - even without tornadoes and blizzards. Another problem area (or areas) are Interstates 80 AND 90 - which are north of here. (It would not surprise me to find (or hear of) Interstate 90 between Olympia and Seattle (the Snoqualmie Pass) getting shut - that is notorious. (I know of it because my mom's sister used to work for the VAMC in Olympia, but she lives in greater Seattle - thus she took I-90 to work.) She is retired now, so it is now merely "whew" info, instead of sweating bullets.)
OMG...Mike. you have to be careful out there. Remember I watch your videos and u help me rest. Not sure if I told you but David, my spouse passed from covid It freaked me out. So I watch your videos to rest and your voice with the truck noise helps me sleep some. You are calming to me when nothing else helps.
Yep I was there. 42,000 lbs and the winds was kicking my ass!!! Serious winds! East of Denver I parked at the extreme point. I called it and glad I did because about a hour later and I witnessed hurricane like conditions. A couple hours later and the extreme force switch going the direct opposite direction. I was parked and my combination vehicle was rocking so fierce that I put the landing gears to the ground tight! I didn’t have much rain where I shut down, but the winds were pretty close to 80 mph. Once I started again after 10 hrs reset, man, truck were laying on their side in the medium. All were laying same way. Truck drivers have the right to shut down once winds reach 24 mph. It is a choice. I have driven into 60 mph winds head on, but getting hit constantly on the side is no fun. I always get to the church on time except for when it comes to weather and traffic incidents. What I am seeing--now that is ludicrous. By-18:30 , my reset was over, the winds was almost nothing and the roads were open again
First time in situation of closed interstate? Not too many winter miles,I'm guessing. All through winter, interstates are shut down to weather and accidents. Years ago, truckers would be in their trucks for sometimes 2 -3 days,on highway, waiting for them to reopen..All did well.We had food and water in the truck, extra blankets, and always a few trees in walking distance for nature breaks..There were far less crashes then, mostly snowed in reasons.I've been in 2 tornados while driving semi, one being when Joplin Missouri got hit in ,I believe 2013 and the big one just outside Oklahoma City in 2014.Lots of hail damage and broken wipers. When it gets completely quiet, look out.Temperature will drop very fast to around 35* from say 85,..you will actually be cold..Don't Never Ever go under an overpass for protection, you can die,a tornado will suck you and that semi out even at gross wgt. You've gotton the back winds of tornado guy..Be safe.but may be front winds too. When totally quiet,no movement, the eye is on you
You have the right to say if you will drive during it or not.Send dispatch message,"Do not feel safe and out of my comfort zone.I'm shutting down until storm over" NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO ABOUT IT...operative word in message SAFE,..CAPITALISE THE WORD. SAFETY IS FIRST PRIORITY WHEN DRIVING A TEACTOR TRAILER..SAFETY FOR YOU AND THE PUBLIC AROUND YOU AND TRUCK..
Great videos, all. My wife now watches you with me on the big tv, she gets the Rand McNally out so she can follow where we are! Sure wish you could start numbering your videos. It would make them easier to go back and watch them all.
Right. They can "hold up" 20 secs. to pass next guy. Thx for splainin about the "lean into" being in the left lane for so long with the wind blowing. Tho, with 32,000 lbs didn't seem to be a problem. I'd hate to be blown over, like in vids I saw. Thanks, and keep truckin', from a short hauler (containers to ports in Seattle/Tacoma). Cheers!
I enjoy your videos but have a question, "Why do you drive in the outside lane all the time when there is nothing on the inside and you are being overtaken by cars on the inside" highly dangerous?
So glad you are willing to do this job. I think many people don’t realize the importance of what you do. Definitely need to be brave. Stay safe and a big Thank You!
MERRY CHRISTMAS MMM - Thank you for posting - so glad you are ok - I pray that you and your family have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Up here in Montana, those winds were merciless - since I am on the road all day, I got to see what it did to the rigs up here - 3 over on their side... keep the rubber on the road brother - 🙏 God Bless
My mom and I watch your videos and we say hello from Harrisonville. Keep it between the dotted lines and keep trucking 🚚. My dad drove for Yellow freight.
Wild and Wooly but as you state rubber side down and rolling so hopefully we'll make our appointment on time. Cheers Mike and if we don't run across one another before the 25th - Have a good One . Best wishes to you and your family - Stay Safe.
I'm from Junction City, KS, it was kind of cool seeing you go through it lol I remember this storm, and I had never seen anything like it. Glad you made it safe.
I was wondering where you were during this. We had 70 degree temperatures in Iowa. They shut down the Mile Long bridge over Saylorville Lake to all traffic all day. 97 out of 99 counties had high wind and severe storm warnings out. Reached Eastern Iowa about 9 pm. At least you could see it. Winds were 80 mph and the rain was going sideways. 13 tornados reported across 6 states. Stay safe.
Ordinarily camping out in the left lane is a major pet peeve of mine, especially on the interstate, but I can see why you elected to do so here. I’ve driven 70 many times between KC and Topeka but only a very few times west of there and never beyond Junction City. That footage was downright unearthly! I’ve ridden my motorcycle in some pretty vicious crosswinds before, so I get the ‘lean-to’ concept pretty easy.
Liking the no nonsense ridealong format. It's best trucking channel, it's soothing. Just telling us what's going on with the truck and conditions... that said; We all appreciate a little sprinkle of your personality, I like your style of dry humor! 😉 great driving tips BTW, your my go to Snow driving in the mountains mentor and Whenever I'm in it (Any bad weather)... I ask myself... what would Riding Shotgun do? Thanks for all the tips and info
wow it is a very dangruse job driveing the big trucks out there on days like that i used to but had to take break from it it was over wellming for me my nevers were a mess but i enjoyed this video it brings back good memoreys
I'm not sure how I happened across your videos, but I love them! I'm from Colorado originally, living in SW Missouri. Thank you for taking me back to the snow and mountains ❄❤❄❤❄
Be safe, I was in the Snow Storm in Montana for 3 almost 4 days in the middle of it, was heading to Michigan, made it safe heading back to home in Oregon....
Saw eastern Colorado 100+ and Western Ks, Russel, etc, also 100 plus. We "only" got 80 in KCKS. Sa Line Uh btw They had some grass fires out towards Hays...Had a couple in KC
Next time I'm on the HWY on a windy day and I see trucks driving in the passing lane I wont get mad cause I learned " The Lean Too Lane " not to mention the extra 30 feet or so of " I wish I had a office job " to " I am the best " . Keep it between the ditches .
I just watched a video from last snowstorm. You have out advice to truckers, that's another good thing about videos online. Scary snowy roads out there! Merry Christmas! ✌️
Merry Christmas to you Mike and your family. I hope you spend time at home for the holidays. May God Bless you and your family and always keep you safe and in his light. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️🚚🚚🚚🚚🛴🚚🎁🎁🎁🎁🎁
Seen some videos of traffic driving through Kentucky at the time of the storms last week, some semi's were blown over along the roadway near one of the tornado's. Stay safe Mike and have a Merry Christmas.
I think the word you were looking for at the beginning of the video when you were looking for another way to say they agreed to load you early so you could avoid the storm was "obliged!" They obliged!
I drove OTR for 25yrs & it seemed like every time I was light it was windy out. I ran a lot of Owen Corning insulation for one company & that stuff has no weight. When I switched to refer, I got more of the 40k pallet loads that were great once you got out of the mountains. Plus, I had less deadhead. I've been run from Phoenix & Reno to LA mty several times & those routes seem to always have high winds somewhere .
Yes, I know the feeling of nervous loading...because of a storm. Remain calm, you gotta know what is coming, and just do all you can do. Survive to tell the story.
Hello mountain man Mike, wow what a ride.. You my friend are one brave man.. I saw that first semi over turned .. I was wondering if you were going to call it a night ...Sorry about the fairing on your mirror..Thank you for taking us along on a wild white knuckle ride.. Be safe , be careful in all you are doing I pray blessing on you as you are driving..God bless...I don't know if you will put up another video before Christmas so I'll wish you very Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays.. Looking forward to see you in some snow.. Love your videos.🇺🇸🌹❤️
I used run I40, one they said it was snowing in OK. So I got to Little Rock, was going go south of storm. Made it almost in to Texas, spent 24 hour stuck on the interstate with a 1000 others. In 1998 or 1999.
I was there for that. Met some people who were out there for three days they said. Heating snow in a hubcap. Said a trucker took them in and fed them. Big snow drifts.

Selena has a flying j ..Also 2 exits that have spots for truck parking.
Kansas Highway troopers will stop left lane driving with semis..big ticket
@@tinaferguson2412 you know when it’s time to shut down. Your truck is your castle.
Cheers!
You be safe, Mike. The weather during the past week has been wicked!
Good job, Mike. Stay safe.
Thought about you when I saw that rig get blown over. Keeping you in my prayers. Stay Safe out there, Mountain Man Mike!
Don't know why, but I enjoy these videos much better than dashcams.
yep, you set the sea and anchor detail ;and lean into the the wind. now your sailing mate!
Straight up prairie schooner
I enjoy your videos but have a question, "Why do you drive in the outside lane all the time when there is nothing on the inside and you are being overtaken by cars on the inside" highly dangerous?
So glad you are willing to do this job. I think many people don’t realize the importance of what you do. Definitely need to be brave. Stay safe and a big Thank You!
I absolutely love watching you from New Zealand..the scenery saves me on airfares n passport lol..💜
You help inspired me to drive across most of the western states. Great videos man.
Hey, left lane Lonnie. Stay in the right lane unless you are passing.
The left lane slopes down to left. It helps to combat the wind in a truck. I learned that from a old veteran
And it works!! Doug
My mom and I watch your videos and we say hello from Harrisonville. Keep it between the dotted lines and keep trucking 🚚. My dad drove for Yellow freight.
Nice Dawn.. and Thanks . Love the yellow truck!!
@@ridingshotgun1251 right! Stay safe out there. 🚚
Dirt, rain or snow-Mike must go. Good job! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!!
Wild and Wooly but as you state rubber side down and rolling so hopefully we'll make our appointment on time. Cheers Mike and if we don't run across one another before the 25th - Have a good One . Best wishes to you and your family - Stay Safe.
Whow!!!
Must be one of the best Trucking vlogs ever made.
Stay safe.
Hey Mike , Merry Christmas...
I appreciate your channel....
Cheers from Michigan ..
Nice driving I beat you love it I show did glad you are on you tub and I hope all your trips be safe.
Have a merry Christmas Mountain Man Mike, I hope Santa is as dedicated as you are delivering goods this Christmas Eve.
Harrisonville, Missouri!! My hometown! Good to see product moving in/out of that small community.
Thanks for the ride Clyde. My name is Jack and I'll be back. Later Gater.
wow it is a very dangruse job driveing the big trucks out there on days like that i used to but had to take break from it it was over wellming for me my nevers were a mess but i enjoyed this video it brings back good memoreys
I'm not sure how I happened across your videos, but I love them! I'm from Colorado originally, living in SW Missouri. Thank you for taking me back to the snow and mountains ❄❤❄❤❄
If your truck and trailer is blown over by wind, how does the company view that? Mistake on the driver?
Be safe, I was in the Snow Storm in Montana for 3 almost 4 days in the middle of it, was heading to Michigan, made it safe heading back to home in Oregon....
Hallo, nice Video, very thanks.
At minute 2.20 the Mercedes Sprinter produce in my Home Town in Düsseldorf 😎👍👍
LG Christian
I’m watching from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 please stay safe ❤️ love watching you 👏👏👏
Enjoyed the video.. wow! What a storm.. Glad you mage it thru,,,, Be safe,,
That wind wears me out mentally and physically in a pick em up truk could not want to drive a rig stay safe my friend!
Me too! I don’t mind rain, snow or even icy roads, but wind is not my cup of tea. I was driving 55 mph before I said forget this!
Really like your videos. Have to ask though. Why do you travel for miles in the fast lane and traffic is passing you on the right?
Seen some videos of traffic driving through Kentucky at the time of the storms last week, some semi's were blown over along the roadway near one of the tornado's. Stay safe Mike and have a Merry Christmas.
I think the word you were looking for at the beginning of the video when you were looking for another way to say they agreed to load you early so you could avoid the storm was "obliged!" They obliged!
So good to see another video. So glad you made it safety. Merry Christmas!
I happen to be on I-25 at around 10:30 am in Monument, when the winds picked up, just before all of the blow overs happen. Was interesting!
Man just pushing through that crap. What a bad ass trucker
Hallo Mike!
Have a nice Trip and stay save on the Road!
Oh my God!😬 what a violent Rain and Wind! 😱
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 and a happy new Year!🎆🧨🍻🥂
36 seconds fresh! Nice to see you again!
Thanks for the Ride along Mike, Stay Safe...
Do they not teach truck drivers anymore that the left lane is the passing lane? Why are you hogging the left lane?
I like your comments. They sound normal not unnatural. Stay safe.
It scared me too when that got ripped off. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thank you for staying into the lean-to. My car thank you. 👍
Always enjoy the ride along Mike.
Hey 🏔 man. Be easy out there ✌
I used run I40, one they said it was snowing in OK.
That driver must be afraid of the ditch monsters riding in the left lane
Glad seeing your most recent video. Stay safe, you're a good driver. Merry Christmas.
