Climate change is not only changing the location, frequency, and severity of environmental extremes and hazards, but also the baseline spatial and temporal patterns that have served as the basis for land use planning, the design of infrastructure, and the development of construction standards and practices. To anticipate the emerging impacts on communities, we must improve understanding of exposed assets, including the built infrastructure and its characteristics such as structure type, use, occupance, compliance with engineering standards, and replacement cost. GIS databases track exposure on a wide variety of scales, formats, and levels of detail, yet aggregating these data for risk assessment typically results in skewed datasets that present a view of risk that is limited to known assets. In this short course, we will cover the basics of natural hazard risk modeling and exposure development with a focus on fusing data from multiple datasets expressly for the purposes of risk assessment. We will also present examples applying the techniques to applications related to flood risk assessment, climate adaptation, and earthquake modeling.
Don't worry, in Hong Kong every buildings is built with concrete unlike Florida and Hawaii which is built with outdated wood structure that wood rot away even without rain and storm.
They were smashed by Super Typhoon Mangkhut last 2018 as a Category 4 storm and a lot of concrete houses and buildings were damaged at that time. A lot of glass windows were broken and initially destroyed inside the structure. Super Mangkhut is the 2nd strongest storm of the planet in 2018 and it made landfall in Northern Philippines as a Category 5 and Northern Luzon was severely damaged. However, Super Typhoon Yutu was the Strongest storm of 2018 that made landfall in Marianas Island specially in Saipan as a Category 5 and almost 90% of Saipan island was destroyed at that time. It was also made landfall in Northern Philippines as a Category 3. Typhoon Saola was once a low end Category 5 Super Typhoon when it brushed Extreme Northern Philippines. It was already weakened as a Category 3 when its eyewall nearing Hongkong. The eyewall just passed south of Hongkong and it's not a direct landfall to that area. Even though moderate damaged is still expected.

Thanks! Much appreciated
Same here!
wow! shared!
Totally AWESOME, James!!! Looks like Hong Kong took a bit of a beating with Saola!
Thanks so much Michael - overall HK got off lightly but I worked hard to find an exposed spot right in the water and it worked out well :)
@@EarthUncutTV its weaker than haikui
It really is kind of weak comparatively to other parts of the world. It also once again proved that Hong Kong is a safe place.
There are a lot of mountains blocking the wind

Typhoon Category 4 😮
T10
Was a 4 8 hours before, probably rapidly weakened prior to CPA to HK due to eyewall replacement cycle close to land.
@@tysimon agreed!
It was probably Category 2 or 3 while directly hitting Hong Kong, based on the wind observations at islands.

Amazing footage James! Saola is going to be the worst storm to hit since Mangkhut in 2018. It is a category 4 near hong kong.
Yes
Thanks so much - luckily the storm wasn’t as bad as Mangkhut since it weakened rapidly
Stay save
Some of my friends who are in HK thought it was a weak typhoon days ago.
Crazy
The center seems go through the south HK sea
Watching from harbour grand hotel, oil street. Not much here . Seems to have died down ...
Yeah, needed to be in the right exposed spot to find the worst wind
@@EarthUncutTV which areas were those ?
Looking at the forecast, I thought you may only get like Cat 1 wind but this seem to be cat 2 or 3
thats why typhoons are unpredictable
Its just cst1 wind, weak
Weak, weaker than haikui. HK is land of luck, typhoons tend to weaken before land, and not strong
