Hong Kong was lashed by sudden torrential rain on September 7, 2023, causing widespread flooding across the city. The Hong Kong Observatory raised its highest level blackstorm warning overnight, saying that 158.1mm (6.2in) of rain fell at its headquarters between 11pm and midnight, the most in a one-hour spell since records began in 1884.

Hong Kong is engineered and built extremely well. Even a massive, record breaking rain storm like this won't cause major damage.

This time is causing struggle. They need to rethink how to act when flooding happens and prepare better the infrastructure

    • @pjacobsen1000

@@JavierISampedroTNF I'm thinking of landslides and building collapses. Those would very likely happen in other places in the region, but HK is pretty solid.
If you're thinking about the drainage system, you can stop right now. No city/country designs a sewage system for every extreme weather event, but will design for a 50-year storm, or a 100-year storm. In a rare case like this, it is expected that the drainage system cannot keep up, but that the rest of the built environment can cope with the excess water.

As a former British colony and territory, the engineering standards in Hong Kong are probably largely influenced by and built upon that of the UK.

Hong Kong Government were having well preparation in advance for the historic Typhoon Saola's arrival last week, however none of the officials facing the public or even issuing an order for work suspension when the Black Rainstorm Warning signal has already been held for more than 10 hours, causing flooding in extensive areas.

Underground MTR stations are flooded, the water level is well above the platform. Walls of water came crashing down the escalator enough to sweep grown men. There was a lady on flooded road going after her umbrella when she was swept away by a torrent of water carried away atleast 50m. All these captured live by my friends and colleauges. Come on SCMP i have better footage than this🤣

I live in the UK and I was born in Hong Kong. Trust me. The heat is fine.
In Hong Kong it's way worse. Up to 40 degrees. You really don't want that much rain, I know it. There's landslides, floods, my father can't even go to work because all the train stations are submerged waist-deep. You can't even drive because the roads are flooded too. This is worse than Typhoon Mangkhut.
You're fine with the heat, October's coming. It'll go away!

All these asphalt cities will drown, to hot because of sun and asphalt, and underwater because of water and asphalt.
They need to bring nature back to the cities, and minimal asphalt. So the water has somewhere to go or plants can use it.

What the report fails to mention is that Hong Kong has never had such a degree of flooding even with torrential rains in previous years, but what's different this time is the release of floodwaters from upstream Shenzhen taking place at the same time.....

    • @pjacobsen1000
      @pjacobsen1000 10 місяців тому +5

What? release of floodwaters from upstream Shenzhen? Why would that impact HK? At worst it might have a slight impact on the northern-most parts of New Territories, but other than that it'll just run into the sea.

    • @KJ_2020

Floods happen when heavy rainfall occurs on already high water levels. We had consecutive typhoons and much of southern China has had heavy rainfall. They don't just release water for the fun of it. If the reservoir is full either they release it in a controlled way or wait for it to burst.

    • @Duffman_Reigns
