I always come back from your videos feeling refreshed artistically and inspired. Even if you're doing lovely flowers and I'm painting a wereshark army. Weird, I know, but art is one of those things where a shared love and enthusiasm is easy to pass along. :)

@@aptwalker2009 The ones I'm working on are a commission. I'm not sure what brand they are but you can see basically the same thing from a website called Reaper Miniatures. Plug in "shark" and you'll see some of the weresharks. Rokea are also a thing. They're weresharks in a game called World of Darkness (along with werewolves, werecats, wererats, werebears .. oh my!) They look sort of like huge sharks with legs and arms. Just when we thought it was safe to leave the water....

@@thoughtfulwatcher LOL, nowhere to turn that it's safe. I did look up 'wereshark' and noted a lot of images and some reference to D&D gaming...so there's my blind spot. Not a gamer per se, so unless there were weresharks in Metroid or Mario I'd never have run across them. I do love urban fantasy for my audio listening, so know of a variety of 'were' species, but had not heard of sharks in any of the tomes that I had run across. The online pics were enlightening though, so I can picture it now. There were some very interesting characters depicted among the ones that I saw. Congrats on your commissions.

Well my fabulous hubby said, we have a scanner and a printer… you can try over and over if you want, I adore that man. I will add my 2cents :) I agree use what you have, buy what you can afford, and work with what makes you happy. I have worked on theatre sets for community theatre with only a budget of $250. I learned how to use my materials and we made some pretty awesome sets. My point is buy what you can afford, learn your materials and it will work. I slowly upgraded certain supplies and not others because that is what worked for me. :)

Listening to you talk is so inspiring! I haven't just gone for it with my art in a long time. I seem to fall into the whole "If I craft or if I do art, I need to make a profit or I am just wasting money". But if it brings me joy is that truly money wasted... or even time wasted? I find when I put that aside and just craft, draw, or paint, I feel so refreshed afterwards. I really need to start making the time again- thank you for all your awesome words of encouragement!

@@thefrugalcrafter Very true! I blame the stay at home mom guilt! I feel like if I have a hobby, it should benefit us. What I constantly forget is that it does. It is my way to wind down, find some calm, have a therapy session. And when I am able to start each day feeling refreshed instead of running on empty, it benefits everyone in the household as well as my productivity in getting all the mom/house things taken care of. But for some reason it is so hard to remember the value of that. And as artists to see the value within us, and within our art. That value goes far beyond what ends up on a page, canvas, piece of wood, tablet, or whatever the art ends up on- it feeds our soul and is something we need to feel fulfilled as humans. For me creating is definitely the most important kind of self care that I so often neglect. I need to work on changing that. Anyway, thank you again- you definitely have me reflecting on things today and I truly appreciate the insight you give!

One thing people don't talk about is that most well known artists produce a lot of bad work but we only see the good work. One of the things I did when young was photography, where it's just accepted that you need to shoot at LEAST a whole roll of film (yeah, I'm old) to get one good photo. Maybe several rolls (dozens of photos). So you're taught to not worry about all the bad ones or mediocre ones. Sure, as we gain skills we produce less bad work, but, everyone produces bad work. It's just that no one shows it to you or talks about it! Bruce on Handprint says that a fellow painter told him, "I paint 10 bad ones for every good 1."

Those roses are so beautiful, this whole painting is so spring-like and joyfull, it goes well with sunlight comming to my room as I'm watching your video. I really like your approach to painting, many people stress me out focusing too much on progress, constant pracrice, as if getting better was the only reason to paint at all, while I prefer to take pleasure from colors and shapes. I remember this one time when I painted a winter landscape and by accident (as I'm quite new to this medium) I created some foggy tree line which turned out really great, this made me very happy. There's something really special in the way watercolor pencils come to life when you and water, it's pure joy.

Thanks Lindsay. I just pulled a bunch of old paintings from portfolio storage books to use the backs of to experiment on. Lately I think everything I touch turns to crap. Could be the long winter, could be I'm over critical. I got Gordan McKenzie's follow up book ; Keep Painting. To try different techniques and see a different point of view. But I'm not wasting my good paper on trying new things out when there are plenty of old paintings to just turn over. I would love a big studio pallet but then I would need a bigger boat. Critique Club sounds like a fantastic idea! I did a similar class at a local senior center in the 90's I fronted the participants paint and paper for their $20.00 and so many wanted to own their own so I made a list of supplies they could get at a local supply store if they really wanted to step up their skills, I offered an advanced class where they had to bring their own supplies! but those people could do work outside of the class and get critique on work they had done. Feedback is so important when learning, a few words of encouragement or correction can solve a problem that may seem insurmountable to a beginner! I find your videos so encouraging and a real delight to watch! Thank you for sharing and Please enjoy your Afternoon! or Morning even Evening whenever you happen to read this!

Great video. Pushing through the ugly phase of a painting is like having a newborn. You love them immediately, but it takes getting past that first realization that you don't like them, until they become a responsive "little person" at 3 months. It's all just work at the beginning. But worth every minute.
I Love M Graham. I have a studio palette in porcelain, that baby isn't going anywhere, but I found a Martin Mijello that has 33 wells, is leakproof and has 2 good sized mixing areas that travels everywhere for about $15. I needed to hear that. Also share your view 👍 on studio palettes. I just found some small ones (10 x 7in and 10x 13 in) by Medeen on Amazon for less than USD 15. They are like mini versions of the one you have on this video, with 18 wells. If you buy 2 or 4 you can make a big palette on your desk. You can also take individual ones on a trip. I love mixing paint on ceramic, and would carry the weight in exchange for the pleasure of mixing on ceramic. These small Medeen palettes might just do the trick this spring. #notsponsored just sharing a good tip. 👩‍🎨🎨

Wow! Another way to use my Neo Color II Crayons. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to rough in a drawing with them and to use water soluble markers in my watercolours. I'm kinda blown away by the opportunities here. Oh yeah, the spray bottle, too. Man, I've gotta practice (on less expensive paper for me) so I can earn my way up to Arches quality work. I really hope when you look back on this painting you like it more because it is fabulous and such a diverse demonstration of techniques,!

I love your painting and even more I love what you had to say. I’ve been in a creative slump and have lots of supplies and I’m afraid of wasting them on something I may not like. I’m a card maker but I am so drawn to water coloring. I really want to learn. This was very inspiring and just want I needed to hear this morning. Thanks! ❤️. Adding to say…I see you offer online classes. Which do you recommend to someone who wants to get started in watercolor?

I love your comment about keep on going. I make cards and think they will look lovely, then I make them and spend a long time on them and feel disappointed by them. Then the next day I look at them and I think -hey that really is pretty good! You are lucky your professor said you were great. I got a degree in Electrical Engineering many years ago and there were not many women in it at that time. The professors I had for the most part felt that women had no place in Engineering (yes--it was a different time). So some of them made me feel really inadequate but that just made me more determined!

I like the looseness of this painting, and your comment about using what you have.
When I painted still lives, I always had to paint a background, though I wasn't allowed to use a ruler.
Different art teacher now. Rulers are allowed!
Question. I have tubes of dried watercolor paints.
Would you recommend I cut the tubes apart, then put them in a palette like yours? I have a small palette with little cups with lids as an alternative.

I started with watercolor 2 years ago. I literally paint every single day. I purchased a primary set of m.graham, a 12 set of qor, and then added within the first year about 6 or so tubes of colors like cerulean, buff titanium, so on. But I still use have and use my very first two sets every single day, and I would say they I'm just now getting down to last of a few of those tubes from two years ago. Now with that said, maybe 6 months ago I bought the paul rubens student tubes for $13 and the art whale 24 set. And I do on occasion use some of those colors, and they are fun to use too. But I love the pro sets I have, and they have lasted so long. A small disclaimer in my beginner phase qor was very frustrating to work with. Now I absolutely love them. And that's was why I got the M.graham and that was a life saver for control, and ease of learning.

I have this Daler Rowney Simply (below student grade) watercolor palette and the half pans are lasting quite long even though I need to scrub a lot for pigment. I’ve decided on Holbein watercolors as an upgrade (the 5ml 12 tube set) and at first I was worried it won’t last me long but dried watercolor, especially artist grade, will be much more pigmented! So there’s no need to worry. I’m also buying some Strathmore 500 paper because I’ve never tried cotton paper before.

Hi Lindsay - Thank you for sharing this video. I completely agree with you about supplies. I typically practice on Canson XL paper and then do painting on Arches when I'm ready. But, I recently found some inexpensive 100% cotton watercolor paper on Amazon. It is made by Bee Paper company. It is only 90 lb but, for 50 (6"x9") sheets it was less than $18, in the US. It seems like really good paper to practice on too ... not as inexpensive as Canson though. =)

I said yesterday that I don’t always watch your painting videos, but I did today and enjoyed it. I’m NOT an artist, but I’d say to myself she needs to stop now because that’s pretty. Then you’d add some more and I wasn’t so sure about it. Then you’d add more and you brought out something even prettier. I liked the end painting. And non painter, non artist me knew who you were talking about when you said Banksy. Read an article just two days ago about Banksy.

You can do a splitscreen for the studio palette and jam it in a corner of the main frame. That way you can use your favorite studio palette whenever you please without people missing your mixing colors. See a lot of artist have the palette in a corner of the frame; may take ajusting normal settings but if you love the palette why rob yourself of the pleasure of using it?

Georgia O'Keeffe painted amazing watercolors on NEWSPRINT (yes, really!) and spoke about the freedom of having a huge stack of cheap paper. My best tip for cheap watercolor paper is to check out Ohuhu blocks on Amazon. 25 cents a sheet, in nice blocks, and I like it much better than Strathmore 300/400! I also like Strathmore 200 for practice, and it's also in the Visual Journals in the 90 lb weight. If you like Fabriano Studio you can get the Fat Pad with 60 sheets from Blick for less than 20 bucks, and I do like the cotton of it, but the texture is kind of a bummer. I will have to try the hot press!

    • @jennw6809

@@krabfingers8473 Well it's not cotton, that's for sure. But at least it soaks it up instead of just sitting on the top like Strathmore. I have been learning to paint wetter to remedy this, and also keep a fine mist sprayer next to me - got it off amazon too.

I couldn't agree more! I always drew girls. I was never fully happy with the outcome, i couldn't draw hands pretty much at all, and the rest of the anatomy was always a bit wonky. I just didn't have the attention span to sit down and learn the human musculoskeletal systems, let alone how to draw them somewhat recognizably. I wanted to draw fun things like clothing! I wanted to draw pretty hair, and interesting shoes. I didn't want to draw boring muscles.
Side story that ties into the previous one in a sec:
My absolute favourite media is pen and ink. I don't use it in the traditional way, I like to treat it like watercolour. I think, now that I've grown from the little girl who wasn't a fan of watercolour becaise her paintings always turned out terrible, watercolour paints are probably alongside ink, and pencil crayons have always been a fall back for me. It's like watercolour and ink are my favourite foods, but pencil crayons are my mac 'n cheese. I'm getting sidetracked here haha. Anyway, I'd known about Inktober since the year it began but I took many years to actually participate.
I'm exceptionally poor (being on my government's disability support system (despite what jerks on the internet will have you believe) does not pay particularly well, and I'm disabled beyond the point of the ability to hold down a job. I'm not going to go into much detail here, but if anyone is curious just ask, I'm happy to share about either my financial struggles or the disabilities themselves.) Because of this poverty, I really couldn't afford new art supplies. Because pen and ink is my favourite medium, I wanted to do right by it. So I had made it a goal to work toward. I decided that when I could afford a pen and a decent set of inks, I would partake in Inktober.
A few years later, we were on my SECOND year of inktober. The first year was a bust. I barely got through the first week, and I was relearning my favourite supply to boot. The second year? Yeah, I did great! I preplanned, I had meaning, and I even wrote a poem for each! I drew all sorts of things! I drew objects and people and animals. I was so incredibly proud of myself. I nearly completed it even. I think I only missed one or two and with my disabled body, that was unexpected! But what was even more unexpected was the afterward. All of my drawings and paintings there out were multiple levels above.
It really goes to show how rigjt what you said was. ♡

I just want to throw in a plug for the Quiller ceramic palette. YES, it's crazy expensive, I know. But they 100% back their product...I recently ordered one (after really wanting one for years), and when it arrived, it was slightly wobbly (not enough to not be able to use it, but enough so it made noise and was annoying every time I used it). I emailed them asking for potential solutions (I was thinking of applying a felt shim or something like that...I didn't want to return it), and they were like "um, no, we're sending you a new one. You paid a lot for it and deserve a flat palette." I was (and am) STUNNED. And now I'm going to have to figure out what to do with a second large, heavy, studio palette (but I will because why waste???). I'll probably use it for a specialty palette, like a granulating palette or something like that where I don't use it that often, but it would be nice to have it laid out like that. I'm not sure yet. Or maybe I use it for starter garden seeds! IDK yet. But the point is that a company like that who will stand by their product in that way is one that is worth investing in for anyone who can afford to do so. And when I think of my plastic palettes (all of which have only lasted a few years...I'm tough on them!), I should have done this years ago. It would have saved me money over time.

The fabriano studio block has a bit of a downfall. It can do realy funky stuff with your paints. And you kindof need to know how to prevent that and this is a special warning if you have water control issues like myself. In that case if you want to buy it you might want to stretch it first, before you use it. It is an extra step but it will save you a heap of agrivation and fighting with the paper. Oh and it hates an eraser or to much pressure if you don't stretch it. Lindsay has a video on how to do that. Watch that if you want to try the paper but find yourself struggeling.
