One theory about the room is that since the 14th floor is technically the 13th floor, because the company didn't want for there to be a 13th floor. So room 1408 is cursed because the numbers add up to the number 13.
For me I love how the room tried to break him by using his daughter agaisnt him as a last resort. And him pretty much taking it as a declaration of war.. Nobody mess with daddy's little girl and get away with it. Not even demonic entities.
@@TheCatPrideCinema Right you are. Dante does in fact make mention of the seven deadly sins in the second part of his epic poem, Purgatorio, detailing his journey through Purgatory. Though he paints them as "venial sins" when compared to the nine "mortal sins" of hell. According to Dante, the seven levels of Purgatory are Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust. And like you said, some of them mirror the mortal sins of hell, though in Purgatory, they are less severe. The function of the mortal sins in Dante's hell is to deliver eternal torment for the sinful transgression of the soul; whereas Dante's Purgatory is meant to essentially "clean up the leftover sin", ones that Purgatory is capable of cleansing so as to prep the soul for the grace of heaven. Dante was...VERY detailed in his interpretation of the afterlife.
This is more of a Thriller/Suspense than horror. Some people talk about how it wasn't scary enough for a horror film, but they're missing the context that it's not really a horror movie.
There are actually 3 different endings to this movie. In one of them he dies in the fire he starts. The last shot of this one is... he recorded everything that went on, but the stuff only in his head recorded nothing on the tape.... however, the tape DID pick up his conversation with Katie. By then at the end he accepted it was all in his head and nothing actuslly happened to him, and of course Lily didnt believe it.... but that snippet.of recording was proof it happened. All of it. She was stunned, his look was basically realization it was NOT all in his head afterall... he had his first literal proof of a bonafide ghost story, after years of disproving ghost stories.
I looked into the movie a bit after I watched it and I did read about another ending where he dies in the fire. But that's super interesting that with this ending it was actually him out of the room and Lily believing him! I was still somewhat convinced he was still in the room because I have trust issues with this film 😹😹😹
This is the theatrical ending. I actually prefer this one. On the DVD you get the alternate ending where Mike dies in the fire, and Mr. Olin is the one that hears the recording on the tape while at Mike's funeral.
I like this ending better...he was estranged from his wife as the story progresses the flashbacks after their daughter had passed...almost like they were going to divorce, but he realizes how he practically left his wife to grieve alone, survives and decides no more ghost stories. That is why I feel it is more impactful. Killing him off, albeit is a great alternate ending but not the right one IMO, and just robs the character of moving on past a traumatic event...and it's just depressing as hell. Plus he delivers one of the most 🔥 lines, "sometimes you can't get rid of bad memories, you just gotta to learn to live with them."

Theres a lot of movies in which the filmwriters DO make up ersatz news articles.... CinemaSins likes to point out when they're haphazardly done even though the article is literally only on the screen for a second or two and usually only for a singular headline.
With the newspapers, sometimes they're original but usually they take real events, real topics, or articles that would have been in papers from the time when the incident in the story occured, then make a fake paper.
I like the theory that nobody stays on the 14th floor. We already know that the mother isn't real, but I don't think the maid is either. I heard a theory that the maid at see is the one who gouged her own eyes out, and I like that theory. If that maid was real, the rotten food covered in flies seems auspicious.
I much prefer the director’s cut ending. This one and the other three break the rules set up by the rest of the film and the only pay-off is another scare that doesn’t add anything to his arc and is just another spooky implication for the audience. The director’s cut pays off the ultimate threat of the room and completes his arc, and the hotel manager’s, with a bittersweet ending, and leaves the audience with several spooky implications, while giving him the best ending he could have reasonably gotten given the rules the film has set up.
I really do need to look up all the endings 😹 I mean peeps in the comments have explained how the played out but yeah I need to look them up and also see which one is the director's cut haha
@ it is fun to compare them all! if you’e not yet and if spoilers can still be avoided, I believe the director’s cut is the one with 1408 burned after the hotel manager drives off.
Identity (2003) is another great John Cusack movie, a thriller. Also, Grosse Pointe Blank is really good too and actually I think the guy that attacks him when he is looking through the window might be Benny the Jet who is also in Grosse Pointe Blank and is also his kickboxer teacher, he has a fight scene with Cusack in that movie.

This movie has 4 alternative endings! oh wow! I'm not sure which ending I like more haha I feel like the third one you wrote would kind of make more sense - at least to me, making it as though you really can't escape the room and your fate is sealed once you enter lol But that's interesting there are so many endings, I wonder which ending is in the actual book 😹 (if it's even anything like the book lol)

@@TheCatPrideCinema The ending where he dies and the hotel manager tries to return the box of stuff they found in the room at the funeral is my favourite. Its a downer in a manner of speaking, but unlike in this ending the hotel remains open but the room itself is destroyed and can never be re-opened. It also has one of the coolest (IMO) conceptual 'death scene' for an antagonist, because when he breaks the window and the fire backdrafts out of the bedroom, the camera turns to the 1408 logo on the door and whatever evil entity it represents is growling and roaring before the paint melts off the sign and runs down the door like black blood and its roaring fades. Plus, in death, he finally finds the answer to his questions about life after death, because his ghost is in the ruined suite when he hears his daughter call out to him, and he turns to leave the room saying "Of course" before he fades away.
