Great little series you got going. 👍 I'm just getting back into traditional archery. I used to own a Bob Lee recurve a long time ago. It burnt up with my house a long time ago. I found you because of the Black Hunter bow search on UA-cam. For a $100 bucks you can try one out, and you haven't lost much if you don't stick with it. Now I'm looking at your bows, but that's a long ways away. I will probably be looking at a take down longbow. I'm not much on pretty bows, lol. It's a tool, and it will be abused. More interested in smooth, quiet, and moderately fast bow that is durable. Thanks for the lessons.
Thanks for watching! We do offer more economically priced bows that are very high performance. If you're ever interested give me a call and I can go over the options with you
I still think the Bear Firebird a 30--35 pound bow, the Bear Titan 22--29 pound bow the SAS Robinhood 30--35 pound bow, and maybe even the Junxing made 28 pound a 28 inches, a 54 inch recurve bow sold by others are better bows since they are dual sided with this being great if you do not know what eye dominance you are before starting. Sure they are all fiberglass bows but being honest, they are better for starting out as all fiberglass bows tend to be cheaper to make with easier consistency in the bows design considering modern fiberglass can be in resin form before pouring into a mold and heated up rather then the old way of taking the fiberglass and heating it to right temps for the poundage needed after using a machine to carve a simi-finished fiberglass into the shape desired.
How about replacing that felt piece between the limb & riser with a thin piece of plastic? I recall the old Bingham T/D bow had nothing between the limb & riser but it “creaked” sometimes when drawn. Probably like the BH, less than a perfect flush fit up.
Really enjoying this series on the tuning and cosmetic upgrades on the Black Hunter. Appreciate your time and sharing the techniques. Curious if oil finishes can be used on bows in general ( boiled linseed oil or tung oil)? This is quite a treasure coming from a professional bowyer, Thanks Shane!
@@markmetzger5430 No problem, I looked though all the True Black Hunter models on Amazon one time to find a bow a person he had bought bow off E-Bay the same model that was actually close to a non Black Hunter model in very interesting colors & pattern, but we could not find it. I even tried on Junxing after being told they made the Original Black Hunter model and found they made the metal rizer model as well. He wanted to find limbs for the bow model and we could not find them as well as post a review to never buy this model of bow, the way the limbs attach causes some major failure in the attachment points. He could only find the bow model though his purchase on E-bay. I think he went with a Black Hunter clone in actual not the compressed bamboo like wood that the specific top and bottom type Black Hunter limbs as seen in video this this riser fit better on then the limbs sold with the bow according to reviews.
@@caseysmith544 Yes it's a clone. I commented on his review about this. And again this is why you never buy a bow off amazon. I bet when he got that it didn't come with the Black Hunter logo on the Box, we know it didn't have the black hunter mark on the bow, it was another company. And i bet that didn't come with the Black hunter seal of approval and inspection tick off. I worked for Amazon for two year's, saw this alot, not only with bows. But he's got a shabby rip off. Had he brought a real Black Hunter none of this would be needed. As i wrote in his review, i have a samick sage, a real one, my friend brought his off amazon, and surprise surprise it didn't come with the samick logo on the box, no paper work at all, so this goes for samick to. I made the mistake and should of known better buying a bow from amazon the one i ordered i can't even remember but cost 145, the bow i got was a Yn-m10 which you can get for about 60, but tbf it's an ok bigginer bow, as I'm a bigginer, kind of, I e i shot bow year's ago. But i do know what Amazon do, and why its not illegal idk. But try suing amazon lol.
@@digitaldogs233 Some of this would be needed, trust me in seeing pictures of the actual 3 versions of the Black Hunter that Junxing sells to sellers, the flat limb model, the curved limb and the one that curved limbs fit on metal riser or curved limbs of metal riser fit the bamboo like wood versions, all sold as Black Hunter models with all but the metal riser model in a longbow and recurve model as the metal riser model is strictly sold as a recurve. All of these bows from the best seller of the specific model need some work with the bow as they are made so cheap and wonder why. The traditional shaped bows that are more expensive from China in the $200--$300 range they need almost no work on the bows but anything under $130 or the Black Hunter model need this. I got a bow off Amazon due to that being the only place to get said model from a single seller, great model just needed a bow more then 50 pounds (max this model had), so 55--60 pounds to get 40--45 pounds from the model due to having a 24.5--25 inch draw. Then I got hosed with a more expensive version of the Cupid Aluminum Arrows at 400--450 spine that were pure aluminum, and being pure aluminum, they were too heavy to work with most non modern compound bows that could handle such an arrow's grains in hunting/3D target situations. I know as my brother in a bow he draws 45--46 pounds with tried the crappy arrows that would start to tail drop after 30--40 feet due to the grains being too high on the model.
Question a little off topic???? If I was making a bow riser but using limbs where the limb bolts are up high towards the end ... can you use a 5/16" x 2" long Lag bolt for wood to secure the limbs. or do you have to use inserts and machine bolts?
Great video... I'm curious...have you looked at the newest version of the Black Hunter?...I currently have four of them and they are really something...The new version has squared off limbs at wedge end...They also have even tiller and cut past center riser...I would be really interested in your opinion of the latest BL...
I own three black hunters since about three years and there are obvious quality differences according to the source/seller. Of late I have also seen other archers who got a really bad copy. The reason I have three is because I had two replaced because of faults. In the end I am lucky to have three hunters that are excellent to shoot, compared to say my Fred Bear Super Kodiak and some excellent Asiatic Bows (by Grozer, Nawalny and Peter Bogar). But no need to make the cosmetic changes you show, unless one wants to pimp the bow. For me your treated imperfections were trivial. Even the shelve not being fully center cut, which can be adjusted for. But I did replace the felt-like material between riser and limbs with rubber mat (from a car and around 4 mm thick). And pieces of velcro at the limb tips, specifically at the spot where the string may slap. Then replaced the crappy string with a Bearpaw Whisper string fitted with wool puffs and voila. I have been shooting the better copies of the Black Hunter ever since without any hand shock and with silence, smoothness and great accuracy. Both with the regular recurve and hybrid limbs, although I prefer the former. And with durability so far. It’s a cheap and excellent bow if one is lucky enough to get a good copy 🏹 Happy shooting
Yes, I hear that as some sellers like SAS sell some Junxing bows (90% of the Black Hunters and metal riser Black Hunters are from Junxing sold by others) like this one 1994--1995 copy of what majority of the compound bows looked like from the era as the Siege. the Siege compounds suck from SAS and sell the same bow as Junxing but often forget to send parts with the bows like the shooting shelf that even the lower end set of equipment Siege is supposed to come with one of the plastic screw in shooting rests made more for target stuff from the early 1980's and you end up having to buy the SAS/Junxing models of shooting rests due to others not really fitting the hole well. The worst better low end bow (not those cheapest bows) to get is the Deerseaker Hunter a one piece almost recurve, that is $120.89--$129.99 and not worth that price. The bows all came out with major mistakes of limbs bamboo, they are still using the crappy bamboo from 2016--2017 that either had delams or way off weights, with this Deerseaker Hunter weights are so off with the bow it can be 30 pounds off on either direction, so do not buy the bow. Sad as Deerseaker with the hybrid between middle eastern/Asiatic and western bows they rate well for the price or the full on Middle Eastern/Asiatic bows are some of the higher rated bows on Amazon for the styles they are made in or price they are made for.
Just wanted to shout out and say thanks. My black hunter is shooting amazing because of you. But I have 1 question. My bow didn't shoot the best until I got my tiller even. Can you explain why? I'm 3 under also
Buy a great plains instead and have it for life and then your kids will have it for their life probably too. China has some really good high end quality products with very good quality control like for example we knives. But the black hunter isnt one... i se there shelf vary a good bit how much its cut and such un even tiller isnt unusual and such problems. Step up buy quality and enjoy it and never look back.
All things being equal that is great advice but not everyone has the means or can justify the investment. These bows fill a niche. Hopefully this brings Great Plains sales from folks who are in a position to step up.
As an ancient bow hunter i don’t understand why so many people but takedown bows. Most people are much better served with a one piece bow. Great video though!
They want takedown for the ease of travel/storage or the like. If I ever got a takedown bow for ease of travel it would be a modern hunting/3D target bow riser that is ILF in design for the limbs so that I have a bunch of options for the bows limbs as they do make a bunch of limbs for this bow. The ILF hunting riser came out in response to people wanting bows for 3D target shooting in the 2000's they could easily find limbs for in stores mainly in Europe where it was hard to find bow limbs for hunting bows due to the odd laws. Cool part is there are several styles of ILF risers in wood/solid carbon fiber and wood that have better design to the bow. One wood design of ILF riser that is cheap in both sides left and right is using the Black Hunter design of handle but has a better just past center shot riser or at center shot riser. It comes in Black, Red, sometimes this dark blue but rarely left hand/left eye dominate bow just right for the dark blue.
