The Volkswagen Golf MK 8 Facelift (MK8.5) comes with huge infotainment upgrades, engine changes as well as exterior design tweaks, with new options of wheels and colours!
The model I tested was the new 1.5 TSI 115PS Match model finished in ‘Grenadilla Black’ Metallic paintwork and featuring the optional ‘Catania’ Alloy Wheels.
1.0L engines have left the Golf range hence the new lower output 1.5 TSI being the base engine, it was good enough to get up to motorway speed etc, but I’d definitely go for the higher output 150PS model. As before hot hatch models are also offered with both the GTI & the R receiving small performance upgrades, in this video I focus on the standard Golfs.

Seriously though great review as always Sam. I don’t know what it is about the 8/8.5 though, somehow it just looks bland compared to the 7/7.5 like you have. Definitely think you shouldn’t go changing Daffodil any time soon!🌼😊
It’s nice to see the improvements to the touchscreen and physical buttons returning on the steering wheel though, plus Match trim definitely sounds like good value.
Also nice to see a return to 4 cylinder engines, three cylinder engines are great to thrash and zoom round in but that’s kinda at odds with the golf’s image, so totally makes sense to simplify the engine range. It’s similar with executive cars and 6 cylinder engines, they do work ok with a 4 cylinder but once you’ve driven the same car with the 6 cylinder it totally transforms its character 😍😍
Great of Lancaster VW to loan you the golf too - being a long term golf owner your experience will be really valuable to a lot of people thinking about upgrading.
I think the Nav was trying to say ‘Hmmm’ but it definitely sounded like ‘Hun’ to me! 😂
I’m glad you enjoyed this one too Richard, I think most agree with you that the 7/7.5 is the preferred car although I am a tiny bit biased 😅I don’t have any plans of getting rid of Daffodil!
The improvements all help it to be a better overall car yes, including the 4 cylinder engines a bit of a USP for the Golf compared to Stellantis and Ford vehicles. Yes it was great to borrow it for a couple of hours to give it a proper test, so thanks again to Lancaster Volkswagen 🧡

Great overview of what looks like a pretty decent upgrade to the Golf. I always felt the Mk8 got unfairly maligned by the motoring press for its infotainment system and haptic touch controls. While they definitely weren't the best, they are not terrible and the car itself was/is very good to drive. Still, it is nice to see VW have worked on the less than perfect aspects and made a better car in the mk8.5.
Thank you! I agree people did criticise the 8 even for things like ‘cheap materials’ which it really didn’t have much of.
The infotainment improvements are certainly welcome and the small tweaks here and there do improve the recipe 😄

I’ve been really liking new Renault vehicles recently and they had the full range at my local County Show, including the Symbioz, I love the look of the Rafale, Austral, Clio, Scenic but didn’t gel so much with the Symbioz’s design it essentially looks like a slightly larger Captur. I will certainly review it if I get the opportunity though, thanks for the suggestion 😄
I hope these are still around in 2027 when I come to change cars as the Focus will have been discontinued by then
