Love this. B minor pentatonic is nice too over this for another color. Can easily get 3 flavors over an A Dorian chord pattern, A, E and B minor pentatonics.
Thanks Jeff. Looking forward to trying this out later. I always find these little mini lessons exciting, motivating, inspiring and, even though short, packed with plenty of food for thought!
Simple ways to use patterns are good for framing. Flavorful variation. Dig it! The biggest trouble spot, sometimes is hearing the melody you are playing and trying to figure out where to go with the last note, or phrase! Always good to stick the landing! Pentatonics almost always work
Working between these two minor pentatonic scales, with just a half-step variance with one of the notes, makes for some interesting chromatic phasing possibilities. Absolutely fascinating! 🖖 Thank you for your continuing insight, I've learned so much from you!
Thanks Jeff, I’ve often wondered about this very thing. Because I’ve always noticed that the E minor pentatonic up there near the 12th fret, pretty much outlines in A minor chord. But I just sure because I don’t know that much theory.
So, about 2/3rds through, I was about to ask if you could overlay the 4th position of the Am pentatonic over the 1st position of the Em pentatonic at the 12th fret and work in and out of both. Of course, you said that soon after, as well as doing the same in other overlapping positions. So my next question is if this works with the between any 1st and 5th scale note combination such as Cm and Gm, or Gm and Dm, etc. ?
Jeff, in an A Dorian progression, wouldn’t you want Bm pentatonic? It willl add the F# which is the natural 6th of A Dorian and the 3rd of the D7. Plus you’ll still get the B. Another option at least.
Sounds great, especially when you play it. For some reason when I play Em pentatonic it does not sounds the same. Guess I just need to keep practicing.
So if the root is A minor, will the fith minor pentatonic always work in any key. In other words, what is the theory behind the E minor pentatonic working with this A minor chord sequence? Hope this makes sense! Will it work over a 1,4,5 blues for example?
@@mikaelstrom1114 ugh it's working for me. OK try this which is for a different video but it'll enroll you in the UA-cam Freebees section then you can download any of the other tracks etc. jmguitarlessons.com/courses/youtube-freebies/lectures/53115329
Sure, as I stated. A number of things though, what if you don’t know your modes yet, or are uncomfortable with using them? This is a great way to get into it. Also, and I believe the point you missed, Thinking about a scale differently such as E minor pentatonic over an A minor chord, although contained in the parent scale of A Dorian, makes you play and think differently. The combination of those five notes brings about a different sound. This is a common approach in jazz, something I learned from John Coltrane and other horn players. Scott Henderson talks about this all the time as well. Perception is everything. But wherever works for you.
Ugh, thanks for letting me know! I don’t know what’s going on as it’s working for me on multiple computers. Can you try a different browser? I have no idea what the issue is!
Jeff, this link doesn't work for me either... hasnt in a while (i've tried before). I ended up finding it - first track in the UA-cam Freebies course, but had to find it on my own

Such a terrific lesson. Love the explanation of each note’s role! Thanks, Jeff!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Call in Am, response in Em - sounds great! Nice lesson Jeff.
Great idea!
Your phrasing is magic Jeff, great lesson!
Ah thanks!!!
Thanx Jeff, it is amazing how you come up with practical ideas of playing every time!
Glad you like them!
Brilliant. You’ve opened the door for me. I can finally start to break out of my rut of always sounding like first position A minor pentatonic .
Awesome!!!
Love this lesson! So simple yet sophisticated sounding. Working on it now.
So happy to hear that!!!
Tasty playing, tasty tips. 🤠 Thanks Jeff! 🤘👏
You are quite welcome!
I absolutely love how you explain how to get a modal sound with a pentatonic scale. Good stuff man
Thank you!!
This is a great lesson. It really opened up a lot of new ideas for my soloing.
Awesome! Thank you for letting me know. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Love your True Fire course, Jeff. It’s the only one I actually finished! Your teaching style is eloquent, clear and direct. Good luck!
Awesome, thank you! Which course?
“Pentatonic Deep Dive.”
So good as always
Thanks man!
Nice lesson Jeff interesting Em concept 👍🎶
Thanks!!
That's pretty cool. When you played the E minor pentatonic over the A minor, it reminded me a lot of Larry Carlton.
Great lesson
Thanks
Glad you liked it!

I noticed you never used the "m" word. Very smart.
Fabulous, Jeff!

this is a great lesson, Jeff! It's really cool. Anything to enhance and alter that standard scale is a beautiful thing!

Yes! Oh man, I left that part out! The relationship! Oh well. Thanks for asking that question!! Just added some text with that explanation!

Jeff, so if E is the fifth of A, in the case of Gm, I could follow the same logic and use its fifth, Dm pentatonic ?
Yup!!
OR… you could just play A Dorian😂

So by playing Emin pentatonic over A minor, youre effectively playing G major (so A dorian)? G major being the relative major of E minor?
Yes! But in thinking pentatonic it produces a unique sound.
@JeffMcErlain Awesome, thanks Jeff. 😊
The link to the backing track isn’t working
