  • In this video I replace the shifter and downshift shaft seals in a Ford-O-Matic transmission. Of course it gets a new pan gasket, filter/screen, and transmission fluid as well.

Outstanding video. I have a question that you may be able to answer. My 56 TBird creeps forward when the shifter is in neutral. Any idea on how this is possible? I'll appreciate your reply. Thanks.

Hmm, not sure. Is it possible that the gear shift selector needs adjustment, maybe it is not totally in neutral but halfway between there and drive.

Man, you guys do things the hard way sometimes. Remove the mount, place a block of wood or spacer between the driveshaft yoke and the tail housing, remove the 4 bolts that attach the case to the bell housing, and rotate the transmission counter-clockwise until the shafts clear. The block of wood or spacer keeps the transmission up against the bellhousing while the bolts are out. Also: never use silicone on rubber seals, especially when they rotate.

Thanks for the input. I never thought of that, it sounds to bazaar, but I see how that would make it a lot more accessible.

@@DickShaw I have tried to respond about 3 times already and being the crybabies they are, youtube keeps deleting them. I took pics of the one I did over the weekend. Trying to send them somehow.

Hello, Thanks for watching. You can probably get the seals from a number of sources but I got mine from Concours Parts.

Did you add any gasket sealer to the cork? Thank you

    • @DickShaw

Hello, thanks for watching. Yes I use sealer on both sides of most gaskets because I don't like leaks. It makes it harder to disassemble the next time but no leaks is worth it to me.

@@DickShaw thank you for your response. I'm removing both the trans and engine oil pans due to leaks and want them to go back on correctly w/o leaks. Any particular gasket sealer that you recommend with good results?
      Again thank you!

@@MickOrioles I usually use Permatex Ultra Grey # 75191 as it works good on most applications.
