Installing Automotive Transmission Tunnel Insulation ... C2 Corvette
My 1966 Corvette project gets some heat reflective insulation placed in the transmission tunnel. This will help keep heat from coming in the car through the floorboard area around the transmission. The product I used is manufactured by Design Engineering Inc. I has a .010 thick dimpled aluminum outer skin on top of a glass fiber core which has an adhesive backing (peel and stick).

    Did you have any trouble with the Wilwood brake lines being long enough to reach the brake junction blocks on the frame? I have a C3 and the included brake lines didn’t reach the brake junction blocks by the trailing arms. Trying to figure out a solution.

    Thanks for the video and tips. I’m about to paint my firewall and clean the transmission tunnel. Any tips on cleaning that area? Flat black spray paint? I finished my suspension and have a rolling chassis thanks to your ridetech videos!

      Cleaning properly will require a degreaser or solvent followed up with soap and water. I used Rustoleum satin black on mine, ua-cam.com/video/X12ajMU5Q-0/v-deo.html. Yes, I will be posting a video of the body going back on the chassis. I'm glad you are finding some value in my videos, that is why I make them.

    This step of adding the foil/insulation should definitely make the passenger compartment of your car more comfortable and quieter. The installation in the tunnel looks really clean and "factory like". Also, the flat black paint that you shot the engine compartment and underbody with looks fantastic too. The car is really coming together nicely. I can't wait to see the body and frame come back together. I'll be waiting anxiously for that video.

    Hello Dick, Thank you for the interesting video. I have a 1964 C2 Convertible in very good condition, but the frame needs to be sandblasted and either painted or powder coated. I am a technician and have worked on many classic cars, but I have never done a frame-off restoration on a Corvette. It would be helpful if you could give me an estimate of how many hours it will take to remove and install the frame. Greetings from Austria!

    • @DickShaw
      @DickShaw 6 днів тому

      It depends on a lot of factors, but you should give yourself a week to get the body off and the frame stripped down. Putting it all back together will take months. I have been working on mine for almost a year now, but I am doing a full rebuild of every aspect of the car and working pretty much full time on it.

    • @DickShaw
      @DickShaw 11 днів тому

      It could be many things. First make sure the fluid level is full which you have probably already done. Then if it has been quite a while, you might change the fluid and filter, you'd be surprised at the difference clean fluid can make. If the problem still exists, you're probably in need of a transmission rebuild.

    Dick- you did a masterful job of fabricating the exhaust for your Corvette. I was wondering if you considered an X-pipe or an H-pipe in the system. I have a C5 with the LS1 and Chevy used an H-pipe supposedly to tune the exhaust drone out of the system. I’ve also heard that the crossover pipes equalize pressure between cylinder banks which improves performance. Just found your channel and I love it. You are a master craftsman and truly a soon all trades automotive.

    I understand you probably want to keep the car as true to it's original form as possible, but getting a radiator with side tanks instead of top/bottom tanks will allow the water more time in the radiator, thus making it cooler when it exits. On the other hand, I have a rad with side tanks in my 429-equipped 64 Fairlane, and it still overheats at lights/in traffic (like your Tbird does), so maybe it would be a pointless change after all. :) I'm about to install a pusher version of the flex-a-lite on my car because I don't enough room to mount a puller fan along with the requisite shroud.
