- We show you how to change the pesky leaking shift shaft seal and kick down O-ring in our '63 Ford T-bird. The Cruise-O-Matic trans is notorious for leaking from the shifter shaft and our basement find low mileage Bulletbird is no exception. I had a tough time finding any real good info on fixing it, the best I found was on the www.SquareBirds.org site. There was still some vagueness to the directions, but they were pretty good. I hope this video helps you with doing the job. Having done it once, I wouldn't shy away from it at all, it wasn't too bad to do and it dried up the trans. Now the cool cruiser is that much safer and more reliable to drive.
Great vid very informative actually have same leak so now I can fix it. I was wondering if you could tell me how much your driveshaft slip yoke sticks out from your trans? I have a 63 Bird and although my driveshaft looks original it sticks about 2" from trans. Anyways great vid!
This was a big help on my Ford transmission with the same problem . Thank you.
You are very welcome.
Very good info especially regarding the detention issue, thanks for sharing!
Glad it liked it and thanks for the feedback.
mines leaking everywhere! That main line going to the pan maybe the source for one of my large leaks. i need to get under it tomorrow and see. i've got lots of oil drips too. All these leaks are minor though. they mostly leak after shutdown because nothing is blowing back on the undercarriage. Still annoying.
Yup. My dipstick tube was bone dry, but I heard that is a common spot. Also, check your metal trans cooler lines, one of mine was worn through where it passes under the bolt in crossmember under the bell housing. It was a pin hole, but I'm glad I found it before it really let loose.
@@easternhotrodder Maybe i'll just let the shift lever leak.🤣 My dipstick tube is tight! I'm going to have to try a copper flare seal since nobody makes the pans. i measured the dipstick tube at 3/4 inch, hopefully 3/4 inch flare seal will work at the pan. I thought i had a rear main seal leak, but i believe it was valve covers and intake manifold. i cheated on the intake manifold. it has cork gaskets rtv'd to the china wall so i cleaned it with a wire brush, 120 grit and brake cleaner, whole can, then smeared permatex right stuff along the whole flange up to the head gaskets. Made sure to push lots into the corners. First test drive today and no leaks. We'll see how long it lasts. it doesn't appear my rear man seal is leaking.
You really do not have to lower the transmission, mark the spot where the shaft hits the side of the transmission tunnel take a long steel rod and hammer to make a bulge big enough to remove the pin. Very easily. I replaced my seal flat on my back on my garage floor with the transmission about 12 Inches for my face it does make it a lot harder that way but determination will get it done.
I could have done that, but I rather just drop the trans a little than dent up the original rust free sheetmetal.
Fantastic video
Glad you liked it.
I did this work on my transmission, but I'm having an issue. Now my car wants to go forward when it starts in parking and in neutral. Any ideas about what it could be?
Hmm, maybe the spring didn't sit right and it isn't locking the park pin right? Or it isn't keeping some fluid from getting pumped through the forward gears in Neutral or park. Not sure, but if it didn't do that before, I would guess it is something simple in the reassembly.
Do you have a link for the instructions you used?
Sorry, I don't. But if you search it on www.squarebirds.com it should pop up.
That website no longer exists.
@@crazyvermonter Sorry. .org, not .com. www.squarebirds.org/vbulletin/
Thank you. Very helpful. First
time I've ever had a UA-camr respond to one of my comments.
@@crazyvermonter No problem, glad it was helpful.
