Ralfi's Idiot Guide to DCS-A10C Warthog: Quick Tips

- I get some questions asked on how to do this, or how to do that, so here are a few tips.
I covered:
Buddy tagging, to see them visually no the HUD
Sending target Data to buddy like JTAC
Changing altitude warning altitude set
Adding Radar Altitude tape (AGL)
Adding Tapes to the HUD (make it look like F15 HUD)
Reloading the CDU and DSMS
Changing lase codes for your bombs
Just wanted to drop by and say thanks @ralfidude for putting this content out. I learn much faster visually than I do by other methods. So it's much appreciated. So, Thank YOU! I Love this stuff!
Thanks for this guide Ralfi. Despite playing DCS A10-C for several years I learned a few new things! Cheers!
I have no idea what you just explained, but it looks pretty cool. I might pick this up...
haha I've been there man. But you will learn. I cannot stress enough practice practice practice. If you think you've mastered a training mission, go back and train on it again and again. It really helps. Along with tutorials like this. So much of the community is willing to help I found, so it will come to you little by little brotha. Happy Flying !!!
Little tip for the laser code, once you hit the pylon go to the top and hit INV STAT. It will go right in and let you change all the stats of the pylon with out have it pick what weapon is there. Good tips in there.
There are some major distinctions that need to be pointed out here, In terms of operating theory so that people can solve problems as they go. I feel that following tips here to the T will get desired results as explicitly specified, but some things are a little more involved than stated.
One thing i want to point out is that, WHEN you want to update the DSMS loadout for newly acquired weapons, the method pointed out in this video is true. But what is also true is that the thing he uses is not just exclusive to the MSG page on the MFD. What you're actually accessing is the MFD Customization page, meaning that you could do the same thing for any of the page selections, you could press and hold the TAD osb on the left mfd, for example, and it will bring you to the page selection screen, there you can choose ANY of the pages from the selection list(albeit, most of the selections are already listed on one or the other mfd's), then choose what you want to replace with said selection. so if i wanted to, say, swap where the TAD and the DSMS are located on the left mfd, i would follow the same basic steps, but instead of selecting LOAD, i would select TAD and then respectively choose where the DSMS is already located.
ok with me so far?
the other thing i wanted to mention was that when changing your laser codes, it is not necessary to change LSS to your newly changed laser code. "LSS" is LASER SEARCH, and the only thing it would change is that when you're in your TGP screen and on the main page and not the ctrl page, on the right side of the tgp screen you'll have two buttons you can mess with, thats the designation method (LSR, IR, or BOTH, with are what your tgp is target designating with, laser or ir pointer or both) and the laser search function or "LSS" which is exactly as it sounds, your tgp searches for a laser. that said, when you activate LSS, your tgp is looking for the LSS code that you entered into the ctrl page of the tgp. so pretty much, if you enter your of LSR code into LSS, your laser search function will be useless unless your buddy or whoever's laser your searching for is the same as your own(which is the issue that you were trying to avoid in the first place), the tgp will not find their laser.
welp, thats my two cents. hope this helps someone.
Thanks for this great video and the super helpful tips Ralfi!
Awesome!
for the setting of a laser codes of GBUs, you don't need to go through the list of all possible loads. You can just hit inv> select the station> then click OSB3 (inv stats) and you can change the settings from there, then still hit load sym.
Also applies to things like setting the chute options for MK82AIRs.
Was deployed with a couple jtac guys in afghanistan, and they were pretty cool.. they had such a nice job. They'd come to work in civilian clothes whenever they had a mission on their laptop to communicate with air support, otherwise they'd be sleeping, playin video games, or playin with their monkey(their real life monkey they got while being there).. that was their whole deployment. Their easy deployment though doesn't make up for the fact that they had some really rough training
entering coords/Waypoints:
if you enter a name BEFORE hitting the question mark button your new waypoint will have that name. :) saves some work
10:39 At this point, 'INV STAT' at the top will load the correct ordnance for you - it basically jumps right to the settings page.
greate video, just a little thing, lss : you do not want that on the same code as the one you 're using, but instead on your wingmans, that way, you can easily find your wingmans target, by using lss ;)
Or, in your setup, you can use the 2 gbu's you didn't change, and have another party lase the target for you. Then you'd need lss to find the target, and lock on
i learned the game. i can now semi-successfully carry out a mission.
That lase thing is why I think my GBUs are getting confused after my wingman drops his bombs... I'm gonna try that trick and see what happens. :)
@PongLenis1234 It has a 700 page manual. You need to know what 80% of the buttons do, and how it works. If that's not your "forte" then no.
they used this to train real a-10 pilots its a very complex and complicated game, so don't feel bad at first you HAVE to write notes down its very helpful
@crazymaze850 Oh i laughed very hard on this one... Very hard.... On your keyboard you have the little section to the right with the numbers all stacked up right? Thats the number pad. Above the numbers there should be a button with a * on it. Merry Xmas, you learned something new today.
A HAH! Cheers.
Now you're videos are that much easier to enjoy.
@meRyanP It will teach you the most important things yes. After you are done with training missions, go on youtube, and find training tutorial videos made by others and start writing things down. Then it's just a matter of doing it over enough to memory. Understanding terminology is important, like SOI STP SPI TMS DMS etc n so forth
Awesome guide, thanks! Although I noticed to update loadout, you don't really need to reload all. Only the Digital Stores Management System (DSMS) will suffice. Unless I'm missing something and some other system also requires accurate inventory information?
Nope, loading DSMS alone will suffice.
did you read the 600 page A-10 manual?
Yup
ralfidude wow how long did that take lol
_Makaveli Read it like a novel at your own pace. No need to hammer through it for no reason.
ralfidude I see what you mean, do you think i would greatly benefit from reading it? Also I enjoy your videos man keep up the great work
_Makaveli Always. You learn little details you never knew before.
Great tutorial overall but few small mistakes imho: Changing altitude warning altitude set - it will not stop attitude warnings (pull up!) - it will only stop altitude warnings (altitude, altitude..).
And when loading new data for your inventory, loading DSMS only should do the job. :)
But
great tips Ralph, many thanks.
Don't suppose you'd be up for doing a quick tutorial on A10-C air-to-air engagement? I just got my ass handed to me by a couple of Mi-24 helos, after my AIM9s missed (probably due to the missile flying perpendicular to the helo's vector) and before I could engage the next one with guns (lesson learned, don't keep your tail in front of the guys you just tried to kill). Also, my wingmen took off a good five or ten mins after me, what was I doing wrong there? I was at 4000ft and they were still taxing.
After watching 'knife fight in a phone booth', I figured you'd be the best ask when it comes to lining up targets, engaging correctly, and how one should break off after firing, plus any other tips an experienced pilot may have for a noob.
Cheers! :)
Just looked at your videos, you my friend have just yourselve a new subscriber
Well... Pacman is a good game, try that. When they designed this plane, the systems engineers called a taxi for the UI guy straight off. LOL
Press the power button?
I bought this in December but haven't played it hardly at all. So many systems to learn! Will the training flights teach me everything? I've done the first two or three but I won't bother if it isn't going to teach me much.
As someone who has flown in a Marchetti in our Air Combat USA dogfight, and pulled almost 6Gs, I can tell you that it makes no goddamn difference. You really can't replicate G forces with little actuators. TRUST ME. It doesn't do jack shit. I mean it's cool and all, don't get me wrong, but still, nothing like actually being under those loads, feels like a giant elephant is on your body and a monkey stretching your skin down.
Ralfidude. I enjoy your videos man. You and linebacker are like my civilian idols haha. Want to see more of your air combat USA hopefully I haven't already missed the rest of the video. I've also played with you a couple times in PR. Hitman-Actual.2.4 is my name. But would you recommend Track I.R over the PS3 EYE? Or is there a difference or is the EYE better? Do you have any advice on that?
Hi Ralf, i saw a lot of your videos by now and it's already a couple of years that i fly with A10, but i forgot how to change the HUD color, so i went back to see this video but....you didn't mention it, could you please remind me how to do it, and compliments your channel is very cool to watch for DCS lovers.
There is a switch on the bottom left of the front panel (the same place where the master arm switch is) for DAY or NIGHT for the HUD. Should be right above the IFFCC switch somewhere.
Ralfi man you use the Trackir i belive, you can do a vídeo as you set this! I have very hard work too use the trackir, never found the good settings for me track.
Thanks.
What is your complete setup? I have a Saitek x52 but I think I wanna change.. recommendations that don't costs an arm and a leg? (you know, like the TM Warthog...) Also, TrackIR Version? Computer Specs? Thanks, your videos are very helpful.
Oh one other question, how are you moving around AND zooming in? Track IR?
Damn helpful. Thanks Ralfi!
Any chance you'd be willing to re-record this with better quality? 720 is hurting my eyes
At around 8:00, you can hear someone calling CQ, was that in the game, or recorded in your voiceover?
Nice video. Can you share your Trackir profile and your setting for Motion Control like Speed and Smooth? Thanks
If you ksrw from tgpd just simply turn your gtryew on hytrw and use pois31.
Regarding the segment on target points located far above ground, I get the EL to "0" part....... you then flipped Steerpoint knob to "Mission"? Not sure if that was connected/same solution...? Trying to get the Mark Point feature clear, mainly for designating new targets. I've run across a situation where the group of tanks supposed to be at pre-targeted point is miles away. Better to manually move that steerpoint to tanks or just create Mark Points on the fly, so to speak?
So if you find some NEW targets and they arent somewhere that's easily accessible, like lets say right on a steerpoint/waypoint, then if you do spot those new targets, put your tgp over them, you can hit that HOTAS key to set a markpoint at what you're looking at (TMS left or right, can't remember). Now let's say that you've set up like 4 or more of these markpoints, the easiest method to SORT through them is to switch that knob from flight plan, to markpoint. NOW if you check your TAD you will see that your steerpoints are all gone, and the only thing you have on there are all of the markpoints you created, from A to D or however many you placed down. You can scroll through them with the UFC steer rocker, or your HOTAS commands (HUD SOI, and DMS up/down).
Once you're done and you want to see your steerpoints again, just switch that knob back to flight plan.
Good stuff, thanks!
look through my video list, specs video is there.
multiplayer mission sound
yeah i found out how to activate it in the cockpit ^^
i dont use the keyboard very often while flying^^
Just curious...how long does it take to learn a given plane? You fly the F15, the Mig21, the A-10, Su-25...Let's say "learn" in three levels: basic flying/attack (get off the ground and land, without crashing too often), mid-level f/a ("competent"), and advanced (like a Boss).
And you go to college, yes? What kind of degree are you going for? (If you want to divulge)
@subwayis666 Nope, but I'm aware of it.
Meanwhile, I learned how to start it !
Need to upgrade my stick though. My antique X52 just doesn't cut it
***** Well just with a 19 curve on X and Y it's not so bad. Not really smooth but gets the job done.
***** Where can I find the instructions for such mods ?
***** Thanks
TAPES!! Hell yeah!! Yes, please!
As easy as PIE!!!!! Love that comment.
This + Oculus Rift + full hand glove motion trackers + full cockpit gaming setup = guaranteed pilots licence and severe air sickness
seems like you would basically have to have it in order to do anything in the cockpit quickly
@M3G4G0TH See, learn something new every day :) Thank you.
i have a lot to learn
I wish i knew what you meant when you said "I'm angels 20".
Great!
I did the training for the GAU-8 and in order to zoom in on your hud the command is Num*--wtf is Num*? What are the actual key binds you push to zoom in on your hud?
Hi. Thanks for the vid, VERY helpful. But do you happen to know if there's a keyboard shortcut to toggle mirrors? Looked in settings but doesn't seem to be one. So the only way to toggle mirrors is by using mouse?
Might not be for the A10. I know for other simpler modules it's M
@@ralfidude Thanks. Really appreciate it. Oh well, mouse it is then.
Now on your GBU-12 tutorial and having a ton of fun! Cheers.
the A10 master
i'd love to see you flying the actual A-10, i mean, this sim is so complete, the only thing that it misses is the G-forces felt by the pilot, hope the next generation of gaming includes this kind of simultaion(i mean like the holo deck from star trek(yeah, I'm a dreamer, and i'd love to see fat guys playing call of duty or battlefield in a holo deck, no more n00bs ey? ahahha)
everything but changing the prf codes for GBU-12/10. those are set on the guidance unit of the bomb itself. the pilots cant change those in flight
@rikuown
You... can...
Thanks!
@meRyanP yes
Is there a way to slew the targeting pod to the SPI? For example put a SPI down on the TAD and then slew the TGP to the SPI? I am aware of putting steer points on the TAD but that process is long and it would be much simpler to slew the TGP to the SPI.
TheDiego1255 You can slave your TGP to a SPI by hitting coolie hat forward long. You can also do this for waypoints. Be sure you have the SPI selected in the TAD.
I recently bought A10 and would like to know if this is a custom desert map you fly on?
Left WINKEY + Home
will help speed it up
RWINKEY + END to shutdown
How do you get into chat ralfidude ? There seems to be no clues anywhere for new gamers to fc3 like myself !?
Is this game really hard to learn? I want to buy it bur im not sure...
how did you get that camo on your plane?
What I'd love to see is an idiot's guide to DCS. I'm still confused as to how it works, what I'm supposed to pay for and what I don't have to pay for, how the hell multiplayer is done, etc. The DCS website is very vague.
DCS World is FREE and you get a brand new Frogfoot. When you are tired of your Su-25T you have to BUY extra planes. think if it as DLCs. if you want more than just two planes (Su-25T and TF-51D) you have to BUY one of their modules
Yes. See, I figured that out in the three months in between then and now. That doesn't mean an idiot's guide to it wouldn't be useful for new players. It's a weird business model that is, as I said, explained quite poorly on their website.
Could you do an F-15 version of this? I know it would be a lot of work so if you can't I don't mind.
+SabreML No, because the F-15 doesn't have intricate systems. Just the RWR, Radar and the manual gauges in front of you. There is nothing clickable, nothing you can really play around with.
+ralfidude Okay, thanks for replying
@eisevisser title
Same here!
Just wondering, can you do this on a real A-10??
how do you activate the tgp on the right MFCD?
Sadly, you know more about this aircraft than many of the pilots I've met...
damn.. that was painful! ralfi's on fire!
at 9:08 how do you set the autopilot to hold the angle ? I only can set horizontal/tilt and path
look at your autopilot panel on the lower left, you have a 3 position switch. One of them says path, so nose up or down and hold it there, alt you can roll 20 desgrees and just hold the altitude at that bank.
aaaahhh ty :)
If I set the AP while in a roll, will it turn the plane? I am looking to set the AP with a circle pattern while gaining ALT while I set up my CM and other systems.
Afaik, the A-10C does not have a "climb/descend while in bank" AP. Best way i know is to simply trim the plan so it keeps the desired AoA/bank. Nothing you can leave unobserved for ages but its ok for some quick settings.
More practical is to use the PATH AP mode while on the way to IP, use this time to set up stuff while you climb to your desired IP altitude (once you're on desired altitude, change to ALT/HDG AP mode). At safe distance before you reach IP, set up an ALT/bank circle pattern via ALT AP + bank if you need more time to prepare.
You can not use AP while banking and climbing. Alt/Hdg= Level flight/Set heading, Path=Straight Hdg/Holds Pitch between -10/+10, Alt= Holds Alt/Bank up to 10degrees.
Pretty sure it's 10degrees or there abouts. If you go outside those limits while AP is engaged it will disengage, if you attempt to enable AP beyond those limits it will not engage.
what is TMS sharp?
Can you play this game without a Warthog thrustmaster?
I have a Cyborg F.L.Y 5 Flight Stick is that good enough as well?
sure
Alright thanks about to buy it
Maverick How is your FLY5 holding up? Stole the one of my brother and abused it for training the A-10c. Did not work out that well. Bad potis, switches broke, wabble, axis jitter,.... It's a toy. :-D
Someday I get THE thrustmaster.
*Nod* Well played >.>
how did you change the hud color ? thx and cheers mate
Night mode vs day mode switch in the front panel where the gun arm PAC is, under there someplace. Supposedly works better at night and with NVGs
Are you an A10 Pilot or a pilot in real life?
Do you ever do in flight lessons
No, just watch the zero to hero series and you'll be alright.
@@ralfidude will do. I haven’t flown in about 2 years and I fired it back up and feel like I’m starting all over again. Can you do a video on communications with JTAC and Grid Locations to follow missions correct. Thank you for all your content man.
@@ralfidude your videos are great, what about emergency procedures, shut down and my big trial in missions when tax gives me a target at a certain grid, do you preload targets before flight?
ok I need help guys not with the sim I have got that, but a decent comp that can run this game well. I do not build PC's anymore, its been about 10 years so I am way behind the game. Anyone have a recommendation? lets stick to say best buy, do they have anything that will run this sim well???? Man do I need help.
Hi i watch all your videos Brilliant but I have a question for you or anyone who can answer, will A10 warthog run on widows 10 anybody tried it yet. New machine on hold till l know , I know it should but does it. thanks in anticipation with what you do I think you would know.
peter newton it does.
Runs great.
A....
Hmmm....didn't know the military called CQ....
Bad habit to 'fiddle around in the cockpit'
hhahahaha agreed!
TMS *short*
If thats for dummies, theres no hope 4 me
what game is this?
DigitalCombatSimulator
hahaha
this should be a idiot guide?
i dont even know how to turn on autopilot
