Just realized the tank isn’t where the baby needs to start (20 Gal) so I’m thinking of putting some type of thing in the tank to shrink the inside maybe in the center, divide it in half so the area isn’t too large for the baby snake and it’ll still have a warm and cool side.

    I have two corn snakes. Both were rescues. My first one is a 5 year old female Named Voodoo, she is a regular amel. She wasn't fed nearly enough while she was growing, and she ended up very stunted because of it. She is only a little over 2 feet long, and a skinny little thing. She is the tiniest adult corn snake I have ever seen, but she has so much personality! She is super active and gets excited when I come into the pet room and comes right out of her hide to watch what I'm doing in hopes that.
    My other corn snake is a MASSIVE male butter morph that I named PoppaCorn. His age is unknown but I am apparently his 4th or possibly 5th owner so I assume he has to be an older fella. He is by far the biggest corn snake I have ever seen at just over 6 feet long, and he is thick too. When I rescued him from a friend's brother, he was extremely obese (almost like a ball python!), covered with layers of stuck shed, had a bad respiratory infection, and his barren, empty enclosure hadn't been cleaned in what looked like a year or more. It was covered in poop and mold, it smelled sooooo bad. They would just pile on more wood shavings over the poop instead of cleaning it up. It also stunk of cigarette smoke. I couldn't believe it. Just disgusting. The poor guys heat lamp was way too hot for him too and there was nowhere in the enclosure he could go to escape the heat. It was 108 degrees in the intended basking spot. I was so grateful to be able to get him out of that situation.
    I have had him for about 2 years now and he is doing fantastic and loved very much. I have gotten his weight to a much healthier place, and he always has perfect sheds now and no more RI. He is a big sweetheart and really loves being with people. He would just hang out around my shoulders and in my hair all the time if I would let him.
    Corn snakes are such good-natured creatures. Even after poor treatment from humans they are very accepting and trusting of humans. They are such awesome and beautiful snakes.
    Sorry for the super long comment. I wanted to tell my snakes' stories. :)

    The first Reptile I ever ordered online was for my birthday last year. I had to wait a few weeks for her to ship since my birthday was in December and was so excited when I was able to pick her up and unbox her. She was an albino stripe het anery that I got from morph market. She was so tiny but surprisingly long. She was so beautiful with sherbet and bright orange and yellows. I had her in a critter keeper to start but that was a big mistake as she escaped after only having her for a little over a month 😢 I cried so much when I realized she was gone I tore apart my apartment and tried all the ways online for finding your lost snake and I never did find her again. I was so upset for a very long time. It's now been just over a year since she disappeared and I still want a new animal. I can only have one that can live in a 40 gallon enclosure though so that limits me on the kind of animal I can get. I'm thinking about an albino African house snake or rosy boa.

    I've been taking my snakes out and feeding them in a difference enclosure for over 9 years now, That's Boas and ball pythons. Never had any issues with them regurgitating or being too stressed out. But the difference could be I did start them from babies when I first got them. From other snakes I've seen and people I've talked to I would say feeding in a different enclosure does help stop the feeding response cage regression with the boas, where as ball pythons are pretty chill anyway.

      Feeding in a separate container is completely unnecessary, there’s honestly no good reason to do it. Typically consistent handling is enough to prevent “cage aggression”. If not, tap training and target training are very effective and a better alternative to moving to feed.

    What's crazy to me is how different each species care is. I have a Rosy Boa, a NA native snake from desert regions. If the humidity is above 50% a respiratory infection is highly possible, and also a UV light is not required since they're nocturnal (I do provide UV though just because it's available in nature). Some owner have no light and just keep their tank dry and that's fine for a Rosy, but if you try that with a ball python or corn snake you'll end up with health issues. Research is key to a healthy snake!

    Thank you for a great video! I just have one question. I already have a 10 gallon and 5 gallon tank. Im going to be getting a much bigger tank for my Corn Snake, but since i already have the smaller tanks i was thinking of connecting the tanks with pipe that my snake could go through to freely move between tanks. So im wondering if this is okay for my cornsnake or if the tanks are too small or something else? And the bigger tank will be his main tank.

    • @unchartedwild2166
      @unchartedwild2166  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you! With that my main concern would actually be the snake's containment. Small colubrids are EXPERT escape artists and introducing a tunnel between two tanks would make the chance of it getting out much higher. For a younger cornsnake a 10 gallon is perfectly fine no need to connect the two!

    Hi Im looking for some helpful insight. I now care for a lovely corn which is easily 13 years old and it's last shed was 65 inches and has a good set up in its vivarium but I'm interested in changing to a ceramic no light heat emitting bulb and want to know if it's a good idea and what sort of watt bulb like would 60w be enough and do I need a pulse thermo instead of a on off like used with a heat mat and if a bulb is used can the mat be taken out so it only gets heat from above. The corn always seems really happy, feeds regularly without fail and always sheds on one piece so imm just after some advice.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 роки тому +1

      Ceramic heat emitters aren’t a good primary heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats and CHEs. Whereas heat mats and CHEs only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

    One of my dad's concerns about me getting a snake was that they smell. I've done some research on that, and from what I found, some say if you keep the cage clean, and avoid them musking on you, they don't, but others say that they do smell, even if you take care of them properly.
    In your opinion, how true is that?

    • @unchartedwild2166
      @unchartedwild2166  4 роки тому +14

      If you stay on top of the spot cleaning and change out the bedding (I'd say every few months with aspen, more regularly with paper towel or newspaper) the smell is basically nonexistent. Lizards are far more of pain with smell generally. If you're feeding a snake every other week generally there's only one poop on that interval too

      Just ensure there are ample hides for the snake to escape to and you'll be fine. If the snake feels exposed constantly than you may have issues like that. I also recommend removing the cat from the room while you feel, just to avoid any issues of the snake choosing to not eat.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 Рік тому +1

      Yes. Heat mats are unnecessary and not a good primary heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen or incandescent bulb is the most natural and beneficial primary heat source. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

    I have a corn snake, she’s a little over a year. For the last 4-5 sheds her tail has a bit that won’t shed and now there’s several layers and I’m concerned. I put extra water in her tank and have soaked her a few times despite her pure hate for water. Not sure what to do

    • @unchartedwild2166
      @unchartedwild2166  3 роки тому

      So what type of bedding are you using? If there's five levels of sheds on her tail at this point I'd be worried about constriction and possible blood flow. Maybe take her to a vet? You could try for the future a humid hide, a plastic container with a hole cut in the side that you can fill with moss to mist and retain humidity just to use when she's shedding.

      Provide a moist hide and mist daily once the snake is in shed. Aspen is incredibly dry. Switching to bioactive will probably help, too.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 Рік тому

      @@theredalpha7290 just to clarify, a humid hide alone is insufficient for ball pythons, they need high humidity throughout the enclosure at all times. When it comes to corn snakes, they can handle a wide range of humidity, to be honest I’ve been pretty lazy with maintaining my girl’s humidity and she does fine, with good sheds. However, they are native to humid regions and do best with moderate to high humidity (roughly 50-70%). They benefit from having access to a humid hide as well. You can maintain humidity by using a deep layer of a humidity retaining substrate. I personally use a mix of forest floor (cypress mulch) and Reptisoil with leaf litter on top for my corn. Pour water into the substrate and mix it in, just make sure the surface stays relatively dry. Having a PVC enclosure also helps with humidity. If you’re struggling to maintain humidity with an enclosure with a mesh lid, cover most of the mesh with foil tape.
