When football jerseys changed forever
Вставка

- Football jerseys are workwear! Like doctors' coats or firefighters' suits. Footballers wear them while they work. Then again: Why do kids spend their last euro, pound or dollar on a piece of cloth? And why do jersey designs change each year? A history of the football jersey. And why Kevin Keegan didn't mind the ridicule. What's your favorite jersey ever? Tell us in the comments...

Pirelli are the most iconic and aesthetically pleasing kit sponsor of all time, I can't imagine an Inter kit without it nowadays
Agreed. It fits so well.
Agreed! With retro kits it's always the ones with cool sponsors that are popular today. Eg Fiorentina & Nintendo/7up, Juve & Sony, Monchengladbach & Diebels, Brighton & Skint, City & Brother. Apart from Inter, today I can only think of Juve & Jeep, Ireland & 3 Mobile & LAFC & UA-cam for sponsors that will add value. The rest is all gambling companies & oil country airliners, or companies with boring logos!
and T-mobile as well. I feel as if they have been part of Bayern Munich's identity and the aesthetic of the kits wouldn't be the same without them.
And then you have Fly Emirates, going with any kind of jersey, with any type of Color schemes 😆😆
@@aniketprasad3128 same as Qatar airways, in my opinion rakuten ruined barca jerseys...
If you have BOTH Man U and a Liverpool jersey in your closet, you clearly can’t be trusted.
same with spurs and arsenal
imagine the ones with a real madrid and barcelona jersey
Astroboy_9000 it’s only bad if you’re Spanish
I am a Liverpool fan who married a united fan. Found out too late.

5:57 That's actually Juventus, not Palermo. Juve also started out in pink.
I came to the comments just for this!
Are you sure that's Juve, because I knew that was Juve but got conxused when she said Palermo.
You are right guys, it is Juventus. They wore pink until they received those bianconero ones from Notts County. Sorry for that! We'll kill the informant:)
@@dwkickoff That's a brutal & honest reply. Not sure which is the operative word :D

That gem-studded PSG shirt made me feel thoroughly sick
Boy am I glad football isn't like it was before anymore. But I wished it football was like how it was in the 2000s
Milan days!
Came for the historic pink HSV kit with Keegan and Magath, loved the respect for Uwe Seeler aswell ☺️
Thanks for wearing the t-shirt of my local team in Costa Rica (Deportivo Saprissa) at 0:57 👍
Por que tiene mucha publicidad?
I've been collecting and wearing jersey's since 2006, each year telling a story. Great video, amazing content!
Pele's shirt is in the Dealing Room of ABN Amro Bank in Amsterdam. I know because it's behind me rn
You lucky lad
Lmao yea and humans are made of cardboard 😐
Thank you for this fantastic bit of art. One of the best videos I've seen on YT in a long time!
I expected the article mentioned another game changer moment in football jersey, in UEFA euro cup 2000 Italy national team played with a new jersey calle Kombat 2000... it was the first elasticated jersey that wrapped player body, since that kind of texture gave to referee immediate vision of a holding by opponent, and the attacker was less penalyzed by that kind of fault it became immeditely a standard, and nowdays all the shirts are made of body shape elasticated material.
Gunter Netzer - what a player. After Cruyff, he was the greatest player of the 70's for me.
Great work from Kamilla!! Love her collection of jerseys
You didn’t show a picture from 1990. That Argentina v west Germany picture was still from 1986.
I noticed that too. 1990 WC final, Argentina wore blue with white shorts while Germany wore their iconic white shirts with black shorts..
You are so very right, silly slip of the tongue. We are already on our way to Mexico to pray 20 'Rummenigge's Prayers'.
I hope you don't mind me asking, you're the Mr Kipling who showed up at Mark Twain's house unannounced?

Romania 1994 was beautiful. I am so disapointed about my new romanian generation , they have new kits but they play like shit...
Iubeste-ti tara ba...
Don't trust this guy 😂
I always wondered why german clubs always placed the club name at the back of the kit, even before player names started appearing there alongside the club name.
in addition, european football was quite late in introducing player names on the kit. american sport clubs have been doing them since the 1960s, while european football clubs didn’t introduce them until the 1990s.
This video is simply amazing and entertaining great job from the host and I hope there’s more content like this in the future
thx for making this topic

Ohhhh a Saprissa jersey, greetings from Costa Rica! Pura vida!
I liked the video, as a collector of jerseys it is nice to identify more people with the same hobby!
I saw Keegan. I clicked.
when juve did something different for their kit this season everyone critisized them and when they go back to the traditional design they say it i plain and boring
I'm a juventino but this season's shirt is trash
unfortunately the jersey is the last one of our problems with Juve
One thing I hate about national team shirts is the numbers on the front of the side of the shirts. It just tampers with the design. Names on the back just adds too much details. The classic shirts were prior 1990.
At 8.58, that Fiorentina jersey was found to accidentally have Swaztikas built into the design and was changed! You can see them one perfectly on his arm and 2 right on his chest inbetween lotto and the fiorentina badge lol
Wow, good eye! Seems slightly ridiculous that no one noticed that before they played in it.
Very interesting especially about the name of the player on football shirts. Its much easier now to spot your favourite player than in the old days.
when you think back it was crazy without numbers, nevermind names. But nowadays it is often hard to read the names...
Quite a history... In my country 🇰🇪 it's said that jerseys don't go out of fashion
Glad to see my hometown team represented in this video. Middle column @9:02 is the San Jose Clash (Now San Jose Earthquakes)
I love retro shirts, just the fucking number and symbol of the team. Simple.
Amazing video!
Thanks Rahul. What is your favorite jersey ever?
@DW Kick off! all of time my favourite Germany and FC Bayern Munich jersey!
We need more reports and videos by Kamilla Jarzina, she's awesome!
Americans may do lots of things wrong, but one thing they get right: no sponsor ads on sports uniforms. Not in the NFL, MLB, NHL or NBA. I’d never buy a jersey with an ad on it.
strong views but many fans will understand where you are coming from. Do you think jerseys in US sports will eventually see ads?
DW Kick off! I don’t know. The first league that tries it will be attacked for selling out. But money rules so it may happen.
I didn´t even notice this so far, but yes you are right
What they lack in jersey sponsorship, they make up in commercials during the game. Also, the jerseys in a league are typically supplied by a single company, so there's probably some cost savings in that, and bigger profits for, say, Adidas because anyone buying a jersey for any team is buying Adidas' product
Jokes on you all professional sports jerseys in the US have ads on them. In the NBA they have add stickers on the front of the jersey usually near the straps. In the NFL Nike simply has a monopoly on the entire kit.The major difference between advertising in American professional sports is the name of the city or region represented is very prominent on the jersey as well. You are still buying a jersey with ads on it.
This is amazing vid
The music in this piece is excellent. Do you have a playlist?
great vid! Very good presenter!
I prefer the less is more approach to jerseys. One standard colour with crest. Not a fan of patterns and squiggles.
Do you like them being covered in corporate logos? Who do you root for when Emirates Fly Better plays Qatar Airlines?
you mean "self-expression through consumerism"?
or better yet "i am an individual because i choose to be a walking billboard"? yes, welcome to the 21st century
Hibernian fc in Scotland were the first club to ever have a sponsor on there kit 🇳🇬
Correct, Kettering were an amateur club, HIBERNIAN FC was the first to have a shirt sponsor in the UK.
I prefer the 90's jerseys that truly defined bagginess and style. It just goes to show that style has no size as we treasure every moment of our vintage kits.
For close to 100 years, Barcelona had no sponsors on their jerseys in an effort to minimalise capitalistic influence. Though they eventually succumbed to it at the 10s, they actually paid to have sponsors. They chose Unicef to be their first ever sponsor. They promoted the organisation on a global level and donated a million euros.
#MesQueUnClub.
gr8 music selection!
5:57 It isn't Palermo but the famous Juventus. They used to wear the pink before they changed to the black and white.
FC Barcelona 2011/2012 third kit long sleeve is my dream jersey. I still can't get over 91 goals in one season. Now I understand some of those goals were in an Argentine kit but I'm an FCB fan.

Doctor Krohn Is a genius: in 1977 for bring at the stadium women and girls of Hamburg, dressed in pink Kaltz, Mehmering, Magath e co.. A greatest operation of marketing, and a great original shirt (not important the look of Barca's player, and our Palermo social colours are the sames).
I'll never forget the 2000's where every player had this super oversized shirt.
I would always choose the VfB Jearsy you were wearing 😂
The best shirt was a Coventry City 90s goalkeeper shirt. It a bulls eye on the chest
The video is good, but how you managed to overlook the South American influence on this matter amazed me. How can you manage naming the 60s stars without naming Pelé or any South American???
Pele is right at the back of the video, saving the best until last...Maradona features prominently as does another Argentina reference. But Peru 1970 was wonderful...
South America is literally in half the video. It is the entire ending.

I think greed has come into football too much in recent years, kit sponsors need to be done away with
Fuego XCFC Kit sponsors are okay to some level. But those betting site sponsors have gotten out of hand
Fuego XCFC we’re quite lucky though as King Power are the least greedy sponsors.
Unfortunately, will never happen. Football is too big globally for money NOT to dominate it..
@@andyc6542 not if enough people are willing to show their opposition to the idea
Fuego XCFC It won’t happen. Football is the way it is now BECAUSE so many people have no shown an interest in it. Elite sport will never go back to the way it was...
Some of those 90s kits were absolutely beautiful
Glorious! Although there were some shockers too. Which kit is your all-time favorite?

Kettering were an amateur club, HIBERNIAN FC was the first to have a shirt sponsor in the UK.
8:11 That Saprissa shirt was unexpected
1:17 René Higuita, probably in the 1990 Italy World Cup
Don't mind the sponsoring but especially in England I hate the betting companies, that's selling out, Man Utd, Chelsea, really nice but dissapointed in some of the others

Something you forgot: Football kits used to be worn for practice or football games, it was 1990s Parisian rappers that made it casual to wear a jersey in everyday life
Great point! The hip hop and football connection goes way back and is international.
the time i bought a football kit was 12 years ago. Na i dont need to pay 50-80 euros each season for that shit the tickets get expensive enough in some leagues
After playing in red & white striped shirts since the 1910s until the 50s then red shirts or red and black striped shirts over the 70 years since , my local professional clubs squad is pictured during their ’ “ Finest Moment - Crowned Champions 2015 “ ( of the 2nd tier of English Football ) wearing all SKY BLUE...as young folk say today “ WTF “ 😭

0:04 Bonucci in Milan jersey looks so foreign right now.
8:12 The best team in Costa Rican #Saprissa Thanks 🇨🇷💜💜💜💜👌🏼
In the US, we still do not have sponsorships on out jerseys (kits). There is no multiple Jersey styles/colors. If you followed the San Francisco 49ers football (American) team, your colors are gold/red with white accents, nothing more. If you follow the San Francisco Giants baseball team, your colors are black/orange, unless it is Friday and then it is all orange. This desire to get all these different jersey styles is funny to us Americans. The only audience that buys jerseys (kits) are 12 year old boys, not grown adults. I get the desire to follow your team, but I would never want to look like a pre-pubescent boy, wearing these jerseys.
Soccer {football elsewhere) in America does have sponsorships & different coloured jersey's tho, with kits being bought by people of all ages
Which team changed their shirt at half time in the 90's I cant remember!
Was it Manchester United?
@@dwkickoff Just checked it was 3/1 to Southampton

'Say I wanted a Man City jersey....'' said no-one ever.

Good video but I found some little mistakes:
1:28 : The jerseys were much more excentric in the 80s and 90s. At the turn of the century the shirts were not as excentric in comparison.
8:27 : That is no picture of 1990 but from the WC final match in 1986
Yes, and Rummenigge had retired from the German team by then. Someone picked the wrong photo, works night shifts in the archive now as punishment😪
And here I am wondering what Chelsea's new jersey would look like with our new sponsors. We will have 10 Marcos Alonsos running around the field.
Calsberg - Liverpool
AIG - Man U
Pirelli - Inter Milan
Samsung - Chelsea
are some of the iconic jersey's sponsor

I've never heard anyone in the UK call them jerseys before: kits, strips, or maybe tops (if you are just referring to the top!). Please stop the Americanisation of a sport that America doesn't even care about.
Im English and jerseys is used often. Kits and strips mean nothing to other English speakers and those not fluent. Let's be international
@@markmeadows1899 Yes ok.. I know the word 'jersey' and I have heard it being used (I admit I exaggerated) but it is a 'football shirt'. In Spanish and Portuguese, it is a 'shirt' too... not a jersey. Yes, 'jersey' is a word that can be spoken and originated in the UK rather than America (like 'soccer' … so you think we should use soccer too?) 'Kit' is used in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, where football is a part of the culture (like the UK), unlike in America. Yet, the word jersey is becoming more common. Type 'football jersey' into Google when you are in the UK and you will get lots of links to American football. It can be used, but it is rare. It's inevitable that it will be increasingly used as the world continues to become more American.
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.
DW Kick off! Yes I know I’m fighting a losing battle... especially when the Americanisation of a sport that Americans don’t care about is being helped by Europeans who use American words when their own language uses a more common word (shirt).
